Welcome to N Scale Dystopia - A channel dedicated to documenting the build of a post-apocalyptic N Scale Model Railroad and Dioramas based on Union station in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Man this is amazing, if you do interiors I’d love to see something like Stan’s living room, the gift shop, or Mabel and Dipper’s room. And I loved your stardew build too!!
If I was ever going to do an interior I would probably have to use a different scale. At 1/160 there would be no way to capture the jar of eyeballs or bigfoot's footprint in the gift shop!
@@NScaleDystopia that’s true, it would be very interesting to see your work at a different scale if that’s something you’d ever do =D if not, the actual massive Bigfoot print from the intro is a fun idea, as well as the crater in the mountains made by the spaceship ^^
Sooner or later we all do some of these things - and hopefully learn from them. My previous layout was a solid spaghetti bowl of track - trying to fit way too much in a very small space - and consequently nothing worked properly. Good luck with the new plans, and take your time to get it right.
Really well crafted and cute. It also looks very do-able to reimagine/recreating for beginners. From what material is the house made of (from a kit?) and what is the really liquidy glue? Have not seen sth like this in the German stores (only the really sticky/stringy), but maybe amazon has it. Thanks for sharing your work.
Thank you for the comment. The house was actually 3D printed from a design that I created. As for the glue, that's known as super thin super glue. And yes, you can find it on Amazon. Thanks.
I have enjoyed the planning process and because I've been able to make a couple of videos, it feels like the hobby is still progressing. I think a reasonable goal is to have trains running by Christmas.
I was wondering if you saw the Rapido announcement. I know that my wife was excited to see they were doing the Seattle Sounder cars. She rode those a lot when she lived in Seattle. Let's hope we all win a small fortune somehow and can afford to pick them all up for our layouts! Love seeing your redesign ideas. Thanks for sharing!
I'm also excited for the new release. As I mentioned in the video, I've already started selling more equipment to help offsite the cost of the new roster.
Thanks for your honest remarks. I live near Niagara Falls on Lake Erie in the peninsular. I model in On3 scale but can agree with benchwork expansion. I should have used metal studs for the benchwork as I have problems with expansion. I have recently installed a splitter system in my home plus added a de-humidifier. I also hand - laid my turnouts and have the exact same problems with the poit rails detaching from the throw bar. I do not have any track power as my locos are all Power On Board. however, I have discovered that my points do detach from the throw bar as the tortoise switch motors are pretty powerful. Good luck with your new endeavours.
A putty knife will help you salvage the track -- if you used white glue - just just wet it -- if you have ballast down, wet it as well and scrape it off .. power wash the track after its all removed .. you can salvage more than you think
One option, if you haven’t considered it could be Aldershot. If memory serves track 4 is stub end, they back in, then change directions back to union. If still planning it you can still have the CNE in between and still model a dystopian lakeshore west line
I can’t wait to see where this project goes! Things are looking great! If you’re doing a dystopia theme, it would probably be important to think about what kind of dystopia this is. What caused it to become a dystopia? Who’s running the trains? How many people are left? (If you’ve mentioned this in another video, just forget I said something ! 😂) I’m an N-scaler too and the only dystopia-related things I have is when I made a custom pair of Capitol Coal cars from the hunger games, so I’m very interested to see how you do!
Not sure of you knew but Philadelphia is not a stub end station, It continues south to Wilmington DE, Baltimore MD and then down to DC going the opposite way is The keystone corridor, and NEC to New York, New Haven and Boston and thats just for Amtrak, Septa also has trains from New Jersey and other areas around Pennsylvania
I only figured that out recently. The station was suggested to me, and looked like a great candidate. It's only when I started looking at the map but I realized the tracks re-emerged three blocks away under the city.
@NScaleDystopia yeah, Altho septa has a few terminating trains it's similar to Baltimore penn and Washington Union Station, Altho Baltimore is a throught Station we have plenty of terminating trains on MARC, but in DC there are quite a few tracks that actually go under the station for other trains heading further south, (I'd suggest looking at the tunnels for DC as a inspection on how to tie in your maintenance facility)
Add on^ DC has 4 Rail lines for passenger service and a little down the road theres a branch for freight to curve around all in 1 area (Ivy City/Ivy City Amtrak) might give some idea on a Y/Turning loop to back the trains in
"I'm glad I did that but never again" has been the name of the game with so many projects on my current layout. I especially share your pain with track-related issues. There's a reason so many people shell out the extra cash for Kato Unitrack...
I’m contemplating how many of the GO engines and cars I’m going to purchase. Such an awesome announcement for us n scalers who have been neglected as of late.
Hi there. Your point about backing trains into a station got me thinking to how we in the UK will have a power car or Driving Van Trailor at either end of our train (Google: UK HST trains or say UK Class 390, Class 800, Class 350) even though it might not be proto typical for US/Canadian trains but the rule that can be used is "My layout, my rules". <ANITA>
Thanks for the update. I'm also thinking of doing a reset on my layout, over the winter. Looking forward to seeing how you get along. Always good to see your progress. Cheers
Great video and good to hear you so relaxed and enthusiastic about the new build. Even thirty minutes a day in the train room is thirty minutes to look forward to. Looking forward to sharing your journey. Cheers Brendon
Dear N Scale Dystopia, awesome how you’ve made this video! Love the several angles of the old layout in deconstruction mode. Even though it’s a little sad to see how those turnouts have deteriorated, I humbly think it’s a lesson worth while for all of your viewers. Beautiful how you incorporated your research, whether real life shots, or the images from the club layout, the throat drawings and your edits, into the report. Cool to see and hear your hunt for no. 8 turnouts has paid off. Very curious for the several comments you referred to and how these comments will help to improve the design of your next track plan. Kinda honored you added my previous comment to the mix. Looking forward to seeing the next plans evolve. Still am building my own turnouts, but definitely changed the flux. Although I must add that a rigorous cleanup with isopropyl alcohol definitely helps to reduce deterioration for those I built with regular flux. Building track and turnouts in HO scale is of course a little less finicky than to build ‘m in N scale. However, the smoothness of running I’m able to achieve still convinces me to make my own. Next interesting step is to delve into Templot, to truly help design the best configuration of tracks and turnouts, with appropriate rail chairs. Nevertheless, for tucked away tracks I am considering to use regular off the shelf components. Last but not least, am planning to experiment for some sections to be put on drawer slides to improve access. Cheerio
North Station in Boston, MA is a stub station if you havent checked that one out. South Station is as well but you cant really see much of it but its worth looking up how South used to look too
I would like to start off with a disclaimer. I do not model N, nor modern image and certainly not Canadian. However since watching your video on your decision to hit the reset button, I have been transfixed by this project and cannot wait to see where this goes. Perfect time to jump on the band wagon, no less! I shall be watching with great interest, wishing you the best of luck with the next iteration. Cheers, from England.
Totally awesome I’m super pumped about this build can’t wait to see it come to live my friend. Another fantastic video and share. Enjoy the rest of your weekend 😎🚂🫵TSM
I'm very glad you've been busy working on acquiring new materials for the rebuild! Also, I am very flattered to see the comment I left at 3:40 That was very nice to see and I'm thankful that I and so many others helped you brainstorm ideas for your trackwork! May we continue to help you along the way! As for you saying you don't have a concrete track plan mapped out, I'm reminded of George Sellios' legendary HO Scale layout: *the Franklin & South Manchester.* I first heard about this layout in a segment on Model Railroader's "Dream, Plan, Build" video series. There was a segment about George's layout in it and he stated that *absolutely no planning went into his layout.* He'd maybe make a rough sketch of the area he wanted to model, but other than that, he went all in just going about building the layout. The end result was his incredible layout that has captured the hearts and minds of many model railroaders. *Perhaps a similar approach can be utilized when building your new layout!* 😄
I appreciate everything you're saying but I will point out that my understanding is that George spent 6 months a year working exclusively on the layout 8 hours a day... I feel like it's easier to not have a plan when you have the time. 😊
@@NScaleDystopia True that, true that. Plus it was his business selling fine scale kits for a living so he pretty much worked doing what he loved. Safe to say he was living the dream haha.
Fantastic,,out with the old in with the New , yes Rapido is helping N scalers , you made a start , it took me over two years to rebuild my layout , excellent progress so far
I would love to see a special edition video about the 18+ passenger stations you have visited. I'm also trying to figure out how to best incorporate passenger station(s) into my upcoming layout. Take care.
Man I had no idea Burlington has a club! That’s like 15 min from my house! I’m excited! Have you ever tried Panther Hobbies in Etobicoke? If you want a terminus station it could still masquerade as a pull through. Because GO trains work in a push- pull consist then if they disappear into the station they could wait there unseen. You pretend like they’re going east and they wait in the station until they’re ready to go west
Starting over can be a harrowing experience when its forced upon you like this. But, given the amount of issues you were having I daresay it was kinda fun to rip it all apart and take out your frustrations on it all XD I know I have felt the same over the years when layouts dont go the way I want them to. One of my layout projects is totally unrecognizable now compared to what it used to be, TOTALLY different layout that gives me alot more enjoyment. We all learn from our mistakes, thats part of life. Good to see you admitting your errors and working towards correcting them. And big up Peco track, the best track that money can buy. And its one of the very rare things that is still English made!! WOOOO
Look at Peco code 55 flex track. It is really code 80 rail buried in the plastic ties. You can also easily connect it to code 80 Atlas or Peco track and use with Peco code 55 and code 80 turnouts.
Unfortunately, it can take a lifetime to find the perfect layout to build. It sounds to me like you are on the right track. I also admire your self reflection and honest analysis. You demonstrate two positive signs that often lead to success and the sorting out of "givens and druthers" that many fail to ever realize. Keep at it and take your time with the plan. Cheers ~ Boomer. 👍😁
Thanks for the comment. I know myself well enough to realize that I enjoy 'doing' more than 'planning,' so sometimes I can rush things. I've often said that I prefer the journey over the destination, so I'm not upset about starting over-I just wish things hadn’t gone off the rails like they did this time.
