I remember the band appearing on the Radio 2/3 programme which replaced Jazz Club in the early 90s (after the death of Peter Clayton, the programmes joint best compere' with Humph). It was recorded without the audiences which used to grace Maida Vale 3 (I think the programme came from Birmingham by this time). A fine band with the late and much under-appreciated Chris Pyne, who, as Peter Clayton once noted "looks far too friendly to play such magnificent surly trombone". It would be great Chris, if you could put some more examples on You Tube. And thank you for this.
Dud was a true master of the piano. His understanding of musical structures and a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of the subject never fails to impress me. I grew up mainly regarding him for his comic work with Peter Cook, but there was so much more to him. A genius and supremely talented person.
I'm a massive Garner fan. Dudley was exceptional. However, this piece is somewhat rushed and abrupt. Garner had a style and, at this speed, it wasn't him.
Yes, Baden Powell. Baden Powell de Aquino (Brazilian Portuguese: [ˈbadẽ ˈpawew]; 6 August 1937 - 26 September 2000), known professionally as Baden Powell, was a Brazilian guitarist. He combined classical techniques with popular harmony and swing. He performed in many styles, including bossa nova, samba, Brazilian jazz, Latin jazz and MPB. He performed on stage during most of his lifetime. Powell composed many pieces for guitar, such as Abração em Madrid, Braziliense, Canto de Ossanha, Casa Velha, Consolação, Horizon, Imagem, Lotus, Samba, Samba Triste, Simplesmente, Tristeza e Solidão, and Samba da Benção. He released Os Afro-sambas, a watershed album in MPB, with Vinicius de Moraes in 1966.
Saw Duidley in condcert in Cerrtios CA, what an evening. Many classics such as Rhaposody in Blue, which was a show stopper and then his hilaroius interpretation in falsetto of a German Opera singer.
Why don't you stop being so critical and just except the Genius Dudley was,In Music and comedic actor, along with his other half Peter,R.I.P. the both of you 💓
So glad I came across this. I love the orchestral version; this adds another dimension. Had just watched his 'interpretations' of Faure and Schubert from Beyond the Fringe. A great musician and comedian and a great loss. RIP Dud. ❤
I am a bit offended by this Aussie audience! They were too straight-faced and unappreciative of some wonderful playing. Dudley deserved better than that!!
Many thanks for posting the performance. I've been listening to Dudley's '78 concert at the Sydney Town Hall. Amazing creative man: musically, comically, theatrically. A great loss.
Both right. The song is also The Millionaire from the soundtrack but it is also the song Bedazzled with Peter Cook on vocals. And the earlier trio version in B&W is way more beautiful. And if you have not seen the original movie with Dudley and Peter, get going!
