Hi, I’m Suzanne. I share videos every week on food from scratch, homemaking & life on our small organic farm. My mission is to inspire homemakers to find joy in caring for their families.

I aspire to cook all my families meals from scratch, eliminating as many processed foods as I can. I hope to share what I learn along the way!

I live on an organic salad greens farm, with my husband and kids in B.C. Canada.

I can relate with the cheese and crackers! While in the 100s here, I made paninis for supper! Just a good loaf of pre-cut sour dough (from the grocery store)... Ha! Butter and toast both sides on the panini press is key before adding the random ingredients... jarred roasted pepper, turkey, fontina cheese, herbs from garden. Warm the cheese and done!

Yes!! Loving the line drying. Here in Canada, people mostly use dryers, but some people will still hang outside. In all honesty, homes are no longer being built (here) with enough yard space to afford room to hang clothing. Stupidly, I think it could also be a status issue. You look more poor if you hang your clothes. I don’t really care!! What about winter months? Do you get any snow? Or just rain? Do you still hang your clothing in that time of year? I’m so curious!!

Oh awesome!! Churches thrift store is the best (across the tracks). If you are looking at buying any clothing, I highly recommend looking upstairs in their boutique. That store gets really busy, so it’s hard for them to keep up downstairs on the main floor. Plus they keep a majority of the nice clothing to put upstairs. It’s a bit more in cost, but not bad. It’s such a fun store to shop in!! Hudson thrift store is across from Tim Horton’s. I will go there occasionally, but they don’t have much except clothing. I find that the inventory doesn’t move as fast. Might be different in the summer though! Have fun!!! Salmon Arm is so great. Also check out Demille’s Farm Market while you are here, if you are looking for fresh, local produce and fruits! They have the best selection. A bit pricey, but worth checking out. They also have a little petting zoo area for kids and families to check out farm animals.

Thank you for the video. I wish you had explained why you heat the milk to 180. For newbies, google it, but basically it helps break down proteins so whey is released. Also helps prevent spoilage by killing off some bacteria. This is not pasteurizing--just heating to an optimal temp to accomplish what you want. Very similar to making yogurt.

Unfortunately my big pan got ruined, and the 2 pans I have are the ones I used for the eggs, so it would have not only been competing, but a messy clean up before cooking the eggs! Also my air fryer cooks bacon in 10 minutes and it cleans up so easily. It was the better choice for me 😊

Thank you for the video; it was nicely done, and I enjoyed it. FYI, you used chicken QUARTERS, not legs. Quarters are made up of a leg (drumstick) AND a thigh, not cut apart. Legs are just the drumstick. Your food looked really good. Thank you again. OH, and the lady who commented on not twisting the biscuit cutter was right on. Also, your biscuit cutter edge should be thin and sharp, not thick and rounded like a glass. This is REALLY important if you are using puff pastry. Yes, you can get decent results, but using thin, sharp, and not twisting yields higher more consistent biscuits.

Suzanne, your comments about not having the right piping bag: Piping bags are basically rolled paper--parchment works very well, wax paper needs to be thicker because it is lighter, etc. Google it up--there are many good videos on how to fold up a piping bag. And, for basics, like a round end, you do not need metal tips--you just cut the bag at the tip! You probably have figured this out by now, but in the wild event you did not know, well, there you go. Donuts are fun. Even ugly ones taste great--and I have made my share of ugly, yummy doughnuts! Keep having fun!

Thank you for the video. This was the first time I have watched your channel, and applaud your efforts to produce healthy meals from scratch for your family. There are many, many great channels on RU-vid that show freezer meals, scratch meals, etc. They are very easy to find. Also, I wondered why you think "scratch" meals made at home from grocery-store purchased ingredients are healthier. Far less expensive, sure, but healthier? Store bought pizza ingredients like shredded cheese, pepperoni, vegs with Apeel (google it!!), and canned pizza sauce is just about the same as buying a "toxic" frozen pizza! I do like your channel, and the videos are very nicely done. Do Google "Apeel." Do look for other frozen dinner prep and scratch meal videos. It is far easier than having 300 people send you recipes, although there are some great ideas in the Comments. Thanks again.

Suzanne, I come from an era that I watched my grandmother make jellies and jams. Back then they used paraffin wax to seal the jars. I not quite sure how she processed the contents of the jars. That's about all the training that I got for preservation. I learned about canning with water bath and pressure canning on my own by reading and using the Blue Ball Canning book which is the go-to here in the States for canning instructions. My jars are either Ball-Mason or Kerr. They seem to be the most tested and durable. During the Covid years the lids were a bit scarce here in Nebraska, but I had stocked up beforehand so didn't have an issue. I like canning over freezing because the power in my city likes to go off way more often than it should. This year the power was off for almost a week in some parts of the city. Fortunately, it was only three hours for me. As time goes on, I'm thinking canning is the way to go. It might be more work up front, but in the long run it's safe and doesn't require any power to keep. I'm not against freezing but just not for long term storage. It's just my humble opinion. Have a great day in the kitchen canning. Nebraska Dave Urban Farmer
@thefarmerswifecanada
@thefarmerswifecanada 15 дней назад
Hi Dave, I totally agree with you about canning versus freezing. A couple of years ago I had spent a lot of time canning and freezing my harvest. I also had squash stored in our garage. It hit minus 20 degrees C. And our squash froze. Our freezer accidentally got unplugged when the furnace guy came for repairs. So I lost all the squash and everything in my deep freeze! The only thing that made it that winter was the canned goods. I realized how precious it was to have those canned goods, even though it seemed to take so much more effort. That was a valuable lesson! I will continue to can my food. I read in an old cookbook about how to use the paraffin. You put a very light layer of melted paraffin, let it harden. Then you lay a string across it and add a second thin layer. This way you can pull on the string to lift the paraffin and unseal the jar! You can also put shavings of paraffin in the bottom of your jar, and when you add the hot contents, the paraffin will rise to the surface. I’m not sure if it was only used for jams and jellies? So interesting. Not sure if anyone uses that method anymore. Probably considered unsafe. I’m sure it worked for them though! Have a great day!! ❤️

Hi Joan! 😀 You know, I wish that they added a new flavour, but in all honesty, it still tastes like strawberry jam. This was my first time making this. But if I did it again, I might add some rose water (the kind you can find in the middle eastern section at a grocery store) to it to add that flavour. But it does look so beautiful spread on a piece of toast in the morning. It adds a special romantic touch! I have been really enjoying it. ❤️
