Today I’m in kitchen doing some farmhouse cooking & homemaking in early spring!
I’m really working hard on from-scratch meals, as well as using up my pantry staples.
In today’s video I make sourdough bread, homemade vegetable soup, from-scratch buttermilk-sourdough biscuits (using my DIY baking mix), and a spinach frittata.
Here is the recipe for my baking mix:
• DIY BAKING MIX for Pan...
Here are some links to items I use on my channel
•Silicon baking mat:

•Danish dough whisk:
amzn.to/3V14KZn
•My favorite aprons:
amzn.to/49yGPVL
•Gallon jars for baking mix, fermenting ect...

Thank you for joining me today!

Peel the garlic and put in food processor. Can add a little olive oil. Use a small cookie scoop and put scoops onto parchment lined sheet pans. Freeze until solid then put into gallon freezer bag. Put filled bag into a second freezer bag to keep odor out of freezer. Or use silicone ice trays to fill with processed garlic, freeze, pop out and do the same with freezer bags. Great way to always have garlic pucks ready to use. I am a wife, mother, grandmother to ten and have a precious two year old great granddaughter. I have been a homemaker for a long time and it is all I have ever wanted. It's great to experiment in the kitchen and I don't follow too many recipes. When it comes to baking, which is more of a science, I always follow the measurements and methods.

Thank you, that is such a great tip! I have minced garlic in my freezer, but I made the mistake of freezing in one solid block. Next time I’ll do it that way. ❤️

I’m a retired elementary school teacher, 69 years old, and didn’t start teaching until I was 47 years old because I was busy raising three kids. I always cooked from scratch. Now that I’m retired and have a huge kitchen, I’m cooking from scratch again. I just found your channel and am so happy I did! I lived in rural Eastern Oregon until five years ago and now live in Central Oregon. Thanks for wonderful videos!!

I am a trained cook ( I’m not a chef because I never went to culinary school.) My aunt, Milann, went to a cooking school in Oslo Norway and then the Cordon Bleu in Paris. She was my instructor. Anyway, I love baking and cooking and have been a faithful wife and mother for 32 years now. I cook Norwegian, Ukrainian, Polish, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Indian, Japanese, Swedish, Danish…. Partly because of my ethnicity and my husband’s ethnicity but also from my Restaurant cooking career.

Wow! That is so incredible! I feel like Canadian cooking is part homestyle, rustic, part everything else. We are basically all immigrants one way or another, so it’s a bit of a mix.

I make my own mayo on demand. It's easy, and I know exactly what I'm putting in it. Salad dressings, too. They are always easy to whip up when you need them. I grow a lot of my own herbs so that I can dehydrate or freeze dry them. They make great additions to breads, soups, casseroles, egg dishes, and so much more! I also harvest the scapes from our garlic. I chop it up, add a bit of avocado oil to it, and use a small scoop to make little pucks on a cookie pan. Freeze them, then put them into a freezer safe container and store them in the freezer. We do this with garlic, onion, and basil, too! Another quick grab when you need flavor added to a dish.

I love your videos too! I relate to your loving and caring for your family and homemaking. That was exactly how I felt when my family was young. I am alone now, but still enjoy making and cooking for my extended family. I love homemaking to this day....when I was your age, there was a real thing about women's liberation from homemaking and joining the workforce. I thought I was weird, because I loved my role as a homemaker! I love that thru social media, there are so many inspirational women, young and old that share their skills with others...it shows we can learn no matter what age we are. ❤

Thank you! 😊 I absolutely agree with you. I think that social media is helping to bring back womanhood and caring for the home and family. I am so inspired by other talented women on social media, young and old! It is definitely a needed thing in today’s society.

@thefarmerswifecanada 3 месяца назад
Yes! I will treasure it. 😊 It works as good as new. My husband had to adjust something when we got it from them, but my husband said that they also made things easier to fix yourself back then too! Go figure…. 😆 It is quite heavy though, and I think that’s why parents got a newer machine. They are getting older. It probably weights at least 25 pounds! Maybe more.

I was married in 78, that was my first mill. I miss it at times, like making corn bread! I've had several others over the years.

That would have been around the time period that my parents got this one. My sister was born in 78, I was born in 79. My parents got this one just after they got married, so maybe 77. It’s a great mill. There is a cookbook that goes with it, and there were some great recipes in it. Even for sprouting your own grains. My mom might still have it!

Suzanne, I"m pretty sure I've mentioned my favorite thing is soup and casseroles. My favorite kitchen gadget is the crockpot. I did do baking many decades ago but just haven't had the time to do it in today's life. I have mentioned that I have two friends that supply me with sourdough bread so I have that covered. About the time I've eaten up the loaf, another loaf is given to me. They love to make sourdough bread and I love to eat it. It works for me. I'm guessing your husband loved the breakfast. When I grew up, Mom always made bread and sent strawberry jam sandwiches made with the homemade bread to school for lunch. I always tried to trade for store bought bread that I thought was so great. Little did I know that I was trading away the best sandwich ever. I never had any trouble getting someone to trade. I'm not sure Mom ever found out what I was doing. But then again, Mom's have a way of knowing everything. Have a great day in the kitchen. Nebraska Dave Urban Farmer

Oh that’s great! 😅 I also remember trading lunches with friends. I think we definitely took for granted the hard work that went into our lunches. Some of my kids have done the same. I find half eaten lunch bags in the backpacks…drives me nuts!! You are so lucky to have a source of sourdough bread. That’s excellent! Have a great day! ❤️

Suzanne, you're always an inspiration to me. I love watching the homemaking videos, you have such great ideas. I'd love to start making sourdough and so I'm looking forward to your videos on that. There are so many methods out ther for breadmaking...I learned young the traditional method. Now they have no knead and dutch oven methods that I've tried, and I don't know what's wrong with me, but when I try them, the loaves just aren't up to standard. Maybe I'll figure it out 😄. Thanks for another great visit!
@thefarmerswifecanada
@thefarmerswifecanada 4 месяца назад
Thanks so much Roberta!! ❤️ I have experimented a lot with sourdough. I will continue to share more on it. It is definitely a journey! I also started the traditional way, back in my 20’s. I started making sourdough about 5 years ago because I was buying from a local artisan maker for about a year at $5 per loaf. I’d buy about 4 loaves a week. It was wonderful, but after awhile I realized that I am way too crafty and creative to keep doing this. I needed to learn to do it myself!! 😅 I have had many successful loaves, as well as failures, but that’s how we learn. I just keep going, and we keep eating it! 😂 Have a great day!!

I hope you have success this year with the parsnips. Not sure where you live, but I had someone else tell me that they didn’t have success either, who lived in a warmer climate in the states. Not sure if climate has something to do with it. I have cold winters here in Canada, and very hot summers as well. Good luck!
