I'm a musician and surface pattern designer based on the south eastern coast of Scotland. I’m lucky enough to live in a house surrounded by trees, so when I first started painting, I took my inspiration from them. They felt very familiar to me having looked at them from my window for years, but working with their leaves brought me even closer to understanding them. Having said that, I have an enduring love of flowers and I use florals, for the most part, in my designs. I really love Scottish wild flowers, especially the humble little ones growing by the coast or in the forests… Sea Spurry, Thrift, Tufted Vetch or Wood Sorrel, Briar Rose and Dog Violets. What i want to bring to my classes is a sense of being wrapped up in nature so much, that it completely drives out all negative ‘head chatter’ and allows you to sink down into that inner calm place of yours... you know it's in there somewhere, right? :O)
Just stunning! What a beautiful lesson on layering. Those flowers look like they are jumping off the square. Thank you for sharing your beautiful skills as an artist. 🌺🌸🌻🌼
Hi there! Thank you,... and, I wear the gloves because I have Osteoarthritis plus muscle weakness from Functional Neurological Disorder. The gloves keep my hands warm, and that helps 😊
Hey again Brenda 😊 I was kinda using it as a replacement for bleach, as I'm a bit sensitive to chemicals... It doesn't work quite the same way as bleach, but has a quality of its own. What I found was that it allowed the watercolours to blend in a slightly different way, and also added a dreamy quality to it? Hard to explain. Hopefully, you'll get some nice effects, if you try it 😊
Hi Brenda! Thanks so much. I drop a dilute of bleach in the centres! Isn't it fab. I do love using bleach occasionally. I mix a tiny amount in a little bottle and keep it on my desk. I would say probably 30% bleach 70% water, but obviously some bleaches are thicker than others, so you might need to just tweak the percentages a bit. Are you over on Instagram? I'd love to see what you do... 🥰 I'm: instagram.com/hollytomasdesign/ Take care, and thanks again! 🌹🥀🌺
@@brendareed5050 ah, yes, that's how I got into art too... it brings so much balance doesn't it. I always feel I've been for a walk round the garden after I've painted. I am doubly pleased that my art is helping you unwind. Take care of yourself. 🥰
Oh Hi Merlinda! Ah yes Gouache can be challenging. And different makes react differently too. You can use white watercolour if you have that? or Dr Ph Martin's Bleedproof is good www.amazon.co.uk/Dr-Ph-Martins-Bleedproof-White/dp/B008CRS1CM/ref=sr_1_2?crid=5Q5XTWRLVXXK&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.9uZBYU2x4cSEMSAFYcKgBYkRE50IOq4kDi5gw1mpFIwmMBvRHjsOwqPexpuuemjY.NtvJhr-fnRgAerWwgpuP2SdioXBJ1w1eLoEh6rnCvi0&dib_tag=se&keywords=dr+ph+martin%27s+bleedproof&qid=1714683503&sprefix=dr+ph+martin%27s+bleedproof%2Caps%2C148&sr=8-2 Let me know if I can help in any other way. Hope you enjoy it 🥰
Holly, this was so fascinating to watch with all of the layering and final touches at the end! I love your choice of colors with these delicate white flowers….which remind me of wild roses. I also enjoyed the music! The Isle of Skye is on my bucket list! Thanks for sharing your talent❤
Awww Janet, you are my new best friend! Thank You! I'm so glad you enjoyed it, it's totally made my day!!! Glad you liked the music too.... I bought it via Pond5, I forgot to mention. I wanted to transport whoever watched it :O) Definitely worth keeping Skye on your bucket list. The whole of the Highlands are spectacular. Thanks again Janet, appreciate you taking the time to leave this comment! 💚💚💚
Love it! I did something similar many years ago with mulberry or rice paper and gesso. Applying the gesso with my finger tips in random spots, after it was dry I applied watercolor, when that dried I ripped up pieces and used them as collage in art journal 😊
So glad you liked it. Oh wow, that sound so cool! I've got gesso and mulberry paper, so might have a bash at that! Thanks for sharing. I love trying new things 🤩
Yes!! I meant to say, you can use anything similar, a spatula, an old bank card, a guitar plectrum.... even card or paper folder a few times? I'm glad you found it soothing.... that's the aim of the game. Take care x x x
Yes it I’d so difficult when you get in a slump of not feeling creative so frustrating and you feel your wasting your talent I’ve been trying to get in the flow but the creativity bug 🐞 is just not there I’ve even bought a few new books and supplies but still no luck. The surrounding evilness of the controllers is depressing
Hi there, I'm using white gouache, but watercolour (used more thickly) or acrylic would be great too.... even poster paint. Let me know if I can help further 🙂
I’ve just recently found your videos on RU-vid and Skillshare. I love the organic feel to your painting and your music adds that special touch! My ancestors are from Scotland and your Scottish wildflowers are amazing! Just beautiful!
Awww Janet, thank you so much for this comment. I've recently switched a lot of my attention to RU-vid and I'm so I did, as I'm getting wonderful responses like this almost every day. Makes me so happy! Fascinating that your forebears were Scottish... Stewart is obviously a huge name over here! Thanks again! Look forward to chatting with you either here, or over on Skillshare! 🥰
Love this! I’m always looking for resists… usually use oil pastels… frisket… but this looks absolutely fabulous!!! Thank u 4 sharing! Yes… the ideas large and small are endless! I’m truly excited to find this creative idea!!🤍
Hi Susan, thanks for your question. I'm using, what I think, is a size 6 round brush. This was an inexpensive one in a set of Caran D'ache gouache paints, but the brand I tend to gravitate towards is Escoda. Really love their brushes.... Hope this helps! :O)
Wow. The contrast, subtle color blends, and composition are just, perfect! This belongs on textiles, dishes, on posh wine bottle labels all across Europe or something!🍷 Gorgeous colors! ❤Subscribed❤
Oh Wow!!! I'm going to print this out and put it on the wall next to my desk! What a wonderful comment!!! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and for subscribing, it has totally made my day!!!!!!! 🤩😍🥰
