The mats? The one I went for was the neoprene mousepad material, so it is a sort of slightly slippery fabric on top which is fine for wiping off crumbs (though I did ask the kids to stop eating over it!), and I think you could give it a wipe with a damp cloth. The underneath is like the bottom of an old school mousepad, so it doesn't slip around on the table - again they can be wiped down alright. I know they do completely fabric versions, and vinyl ones I think, but I haven't bought either of those
Yeah, before I started, my initial notion was that the filters would be perfect and I would get clean IPA out the bottom, which is often used as a cleaner. Obviously I quickly saw that notion was wildly inaccurate! But I didn’t have anything better to use anyway, and I knew I could replace those vessels easily enough if it all went sideways (as it did). So it was all a bit of a learning curve, hence making a video of discovering the mistakes along the way and correcting them.
Thanks, it was brilliant - love it when it works out to be such a cool story, especially because it happened organically and without me fudging anything! Was so lovely seeing the kids getting so excited over it!
I know you've not loved the process, but the end result looks good. Would these be OK to use spray cans with, or might the accelerant be problematic with the MDF?
Thanks mate, yeah I am pleased with them in the end. Mostly it was my issue I think, although it is a bit annoying getting into all those cut out wooden bits! They came to me assembled and sprayed already, I'm not sure if he did anything to them first - I have heard various things from people saying that they need painting with PVA first or something like that. I've always found that these type of MDF terrain pieces take spray paint fine, and if there are any slightly blotchy bits it doesn't really matter. I gave them a couple of coats of Munitorum Varnish after they were painted.
Great stuff, thanks! Yeah I just wanted to have some very clear and easy ways to distinguish the 3 units of Leapers that would otherwise look very similar, especially as I want to keep the paint scheme consistent between them
Good question! I don't have any of the "new" ogres (i.e. Ogre Kingdoms), I have some of the very old metal ones! The Mercenery and Warrior ogres are on regular 25mm bases so they are a bit smaller. The big ogres are on 50mm wide bases and overhang a bit, so they're a bit bigger. GW ogres go on 40mm bases quite comfortably. I'll dig out my old ogres for a comparison! I was looking at alternate 3D sculpts earlier on, deciding if I want to replace all or some of them - there are a lot of great ogres out there, too many to choose from!
Thanks a lot, glad you like them! They were actually pretty easy - I wanted a nice, quick contrast paint scheme and liked the black with red look, but yeah other than a few details quick and easy to do. I've done a few videos about how I went about doing them here ru-vid.com/group/PLDti5deHhFGk9I4nqqf9309XRF8iWi5rH
No I haven't yet, I did them both so my daughter and wife had the option of which one to choose, but for now keeping things simple and as written in the first book. I do like the idea of altering things in the future, but don't want to overcomplicate for the little ones.... yet! Maybe a full squad of 4 barbarians and see what they can do.... I have plenty of alternative miniatures to choose from!! 😅
What do you mean, you want me to show the old expansions? I don't have them unfortunately - as I showed in one of my first videos, I have some of the orcs and goblins from the original game (first models I ever bought for 50p in the playground!! 😁), and I have the original board but there were no components in the charity shop box 😔 So I would love to do videos about the old version but I simply don't have it!
In some missions there is an effect where zargon infuses things with his power, and these minis with different plastic can represent that. It can help in some custome missions if you use these rules.
Ah right, I haven't played that far ahead yet, makes sense. I think I would rather do it with tokens myself - I have some condition rings for D&D that I got off Amazon, something like that just to loop over a model's head to show it has been empowered would be a simple solution I think. The alternative sculpts are quite nice though!
Great videos. Talking about 3d printed boards the Dragons Rest board and accessories are amazing. I’ve just finished printing off the whole board, walls, furniture etc and really enjoying painting them up. It adds a whole new level to this classic game that I played as a child. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks so much, I will! 😊 I have the Dragon's Rest STL files, I need to get my filament printer up and running because I'm not going to print all that in resin!! 🤣 But yeah, going to start printing that out while I'm painting the rest of the miniatures, his board looks brilliant
Yeah defo needs a filament printer. I was printing them off on two printers and only took about 4 weeks to get full board. Prob also took about 10 spools of filament. Well worth the effort and brings HeroQuest to life. The squares are a lot bigger so will help with your printed model sizes you’ve mentioned in your other videos.
So glad it was helpful! :-D Have you got some bigger pieces that need the A3? I'm seeing uses for both sizes myself. Maybe in the third kickstarter Jon will go for some A2 books!!! 😂
@@WyvernMinis I'm getting the A3 books so I can do larger battle scenes with 15mm scale minis. I own the two original A4 books and your video inspired me to take some (hasty) pictures! I posted them on the Kickstarter, and I'll share here as well: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uNZxaA7CtNW2c9DaQIJW_EqRJt3TUeei
Oh cool, I haven't seen any Orc archers in any of the expansions I've got, are they a homebrew thing or official? I have a cool old school Shaman printed out and ready for painting, he looks great and should look OK next to these lads... smaller and more weedy, but that's cos he's a shaman right!
Put bended figures in near boiling water for about 20 seconds. Then it either snaps back or you can carefully adjust it yourself. Cool off in cold water after. Then it stays in shape 🤛🏼
Yeah definitely what I do with warped resin from Forgeworld or something, just some of these are so far out (wobbly bases for instance) and when it's done they'll still be the plastic that I'm not keen on, and I'm not a particular fan of the sculpts. New video up shortly of painting my alternative orcs and goblins, and I painted a few of the ones out of the box too - they are easy to paint and would be good as an intro to the hobby, I just wanted to make my Heroquest set all nice and customised :-)
@@WyvernMinis no purchases yet, but they are on Etsy. Don't have a printer. I have yet to paint my set up, and the first resin purchases will be Traps, Blocking Walls, etc., basically all the cardboard tiles I hate.
Yeah the cardboard tiles for blocked passages are annoying, very easy to miss as they blend in with the floor. Definitely worth replacing I think. I like the sound of all the green stonework, you'll have to eventually make a whole Castle Greyskull board! I and planning on printing one after painting the figures, but I have seen some good examples made from foam board
@@WyvernMinis there are several print-at-home boards that you can have printed on neoprine. One set I like has large dark gaps between rooms so you can place doors without them being intrusive. DriveThruRPG has some.
Oh, I can hear it OK on my speakers. Sound quality isn't as good as normal as I was recording the audio while filming it rather than dubbing it later, so it has a bit of an echo. Not inaudible though?
Yeah definitely, and there are so many good options out there now as well. I do like buying a complete boxed game that has everything in it though - makes it easy to get out and play without having to dig through loads of foam boxes to find all the right minis! That's why I'm trying to find good alternatives to be dedicated Heroquest minis, rather than pulling double duty with Frostgrave / Warhammer / D&D. Plus getting the right size for the board - although maybe getting a mat with larger squares or printing out a new board would be a good option too
Not played that one but have heard good things about the designs and stuff. I particularly like the Descent models, I have a bunch of the 2nd edition ones, they are fun and remind me of Nolzur's Marvellous Miniatures and that sort of stuff, but the 3rd edition is really good quality. That's on my painting to-do list! :-)
I like Dark Souls but a lot of people HATE it. So you can probably buy it really cheap. The minis are insanely nice if you like dark fantasy. Pathfinder prepainted minis boxes are pretty cool and some are probably on sale right now. Could make for a good video if you popped open some boxes. Nolzurs I like too because theyr'e easy to paint and look good.@@WyvernMinis
I heard the video game of Dark Souls was very frustrating, sounded like it wouldn't be my cup of tea, but yeah the aesthetic looks cool. Nolzur's are also really good price. I've had a couple of slightly bendy issues with them, but not much. I did some painting WIP of Nolzur's stuff for D&D on my blog before I started doing videos, I think people prefer videos to reading blogs nowadays! :-D I'll definitely get some more of that stuff on here soon though
I feel like Mage in the Mirror/Frozen Horror can be played in either order. They were also known as the Quest Pack for the Elf/Barbarian respectfully. I am curious what you think of the challenge ramp up of Frozen Horror. Some have claimed the Barbarian expansion was far too difficult, perhaps unfairly so...
Cool, thanks for the info. I think it will be a little while till we get on to the expansion quests with the kids (two quests in a session is pushing it for them!), and unfortunately I think I'll be locked into being Zargon for the forseeable future, but we'll see. Maybe I'll use the app to solo the new quests to 'playtest' them! I'm looking forward to getting them painted up and playing more either way :-)
@@WyvernMinis sounds good. If you need more info, look up "Always Board Never Boring" he has a ton of Hero Quest (spoiler free) reviews up. 😊 Oh! Also keep an eye out for the "Prophecy of Telor" and "Spirit Queen's Torment" quest packs, they have even MORE dice!! 😁
I think Ogre Horde is expected in the UK early next year, not sure about Morcar... I suppose if you were using alternate minis you can just get the rules from the first time it was released? Apart from the different tiles and cards I suppose... how have you found the other expansions?
Great video, wanted to let you know you missed quite a bit of miniatures and furniture as each expansion has two trays of them. Also just fyi, in Mage of the mirror that hero is the male elf and in Rise of the Dead Moon that is the new Knight Hero. In Frozen Horror the Hero is the female barbarian.
Good to know, thanks. Yeah I found the other bits underneath but had already turned the camera off, I saw what I wanted though - the models seem much better quality than in the main game. I'll have to actually open the booklets and read what's in them rather than just guessing! :-D
@@WyvernMinisYeah there are actually 2 different versions of the main game, the one you bought was from the initial kickstarter, the other is a thinner version of the main box which includes the better quality minis they began to make once it hit retail. I have the one you own as well. Yeah there is a lot to read up on, including the online quests 😂 it never ends.
Wow, didn't know about the different models in the post retail box, so early purchasers supporting it got an inferior product? I've stopped doing kickstarters because of that kind of thing, and I got suckered into a lot of them in the past!
Yeah that has crossed my mind, as well as possibly making a 3D board with Dungeons and Lasers terrain or 3D printed stuff, it could be a future project! There are some good printed mats too, which is also tempting. How did you do yours?
@@WyvernMinis i pretty much followed this guys design with some personal changes like my own painting techniques but ye very similar to his. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S-1AnK88lKs.html
Great game. I played this on boxing day at nans house. No one had a clue what to do but it was briliant. I bought some blank dice and made my own hero quest dice last year, work excellent.
Nice! Yeah I love it, once you have the rules sorted it's very quick to set up and play. It looks like there are some new expansions with translucent Bunny dice in them which might be exciting (and mean that the players can have their own set of dice rather than sharing with me!) :-D
Thanks mate, I've got quite a lot of the alternative models almost ready now so next video it should start to come together. Such a great game, I think it will be even better with better quality, painted miniatures :-)
If you want more giants: There is a nice D&D Frameworks Hill Giant, and MaxMini has some excellent sculpts too, including 3 Mega Gargants. I just started a SoB-army and I love the variety of giant models I can get if not sticking strictly to GW.
Oh yeah good call! I have the pre-frameworks Hill Giant in there, the frameworks one looks quite cool but a lot more expensive than the monopose one. I actually have a couple of the MaxMini Mega Gargants, plus a few others that need painting - will be in a video as soon as I get a chance to sit down and get on to them. The MaxMinis are really nice! :-D
Thanks, yeah I think they're great and really glad to be able to use them as an army now - a big stompy mass charging across the table! Makes for very cinematic games :-D
The little ones? Yeah I've seen some great conversions, I've just never been a big fan of how their bellies sit above their weirdly thin legs that sort of point inwards... but loads of nice bits on the sprue, so maybe I should get one anyway! The mega-gargants, on the other hand, fantastic models and loads of bits to use elsewhere for money saving - next time I'll get them out, they just need some painting!
@@WyvernMinis I meant both kits I've done a ton of conversions with both kits, the belly can be annoying but the eye is drawn to the actual conversion rather than the belly, such as adding hair or different weapons from other kits
The trick for those glossy plastics wash them, then sand the living crap out of them, hit them with a wire brush or even just a scouring pad, anytthing to knock the gloss off will make them take paint and glue better and always prime cheap Halfords rattle cans will do. It's a faff I know but a little hard work at the outset pays dividends later :-)
Yeah sounds good, I liked the rough texture finish of the polyfilla on these ones, but next time I reckon I'll give that a go to get more of a flat sheet metal sort of vibe :-)
I'm in process of setting up an Etsy shop for 3D printing models, but very happy to do some terrain bits too. Drop me an email to wyvern.minis@gmail.com to let me know what you're interested in and I'm sure we can work something out :-)
