Hello, I am Nigel Jewkes and welcome to my MUDDYBOOTZ ALLOTMENT CHANNEL.
I plan to upload a regular update into the activities on my allotment. See what's sowing, growing and cropping, plus all of the preparation that goes into maintaining and improving my plot. I visit a few Gardening Shows through the year, and will be sharing my visit with my subscribers
@@MuddyBootz I planted a load of English Lav on the plot to make a sort of border, but it never did very well. I mistakenly bought a French Lav to fill a gap and it is spectacular (you might see it in my vids). I was going to take the cuttings yesterday but delayed as it was so hot and, as sure as eggs is eggs, something would have happened, and they would have dried up in the car LOL. Taking the cuttings today, if I can find any non-flowering stems!
thanks for that! when youve planted the cuttings and watered them, you mention keeping them underthe bench, is that in the greenhouse? and how often would you water them after planting?
Hi Keith… yeah 😊. Something I decided at last minute. When I was at a recent garden show, the average price was £6-8 per plant. Thought this may help save viewers a few pounds 😉👍🏻. Take care mate
Thank you for the excellent information, Mr. Nigel! Parsnips aren't a popular vegetable in my area of the U.S. But, after tasting fried parsnip strips at an English style pub recently, I fell in love. Now, to procure the seeds to grow them!
Hi Nigel, garlic has been a hard one for me this year and others too. Quite a lot of crops have failed this season for me, leeks have rust again, sweetpeas germinated but were munched, 3 more sowings & gave up. Sunflowers were munched too, only one left & it doesn't look good. Lovely update. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
So many gardener's have lost their garlic and onions. It was warm in the mini heat wave, then nothing but rain.....😂. Is it July.....😅 ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
Hi Nigel. There seem to be a lot of us who have had a garlic fail this year. Quick question - what type of wire or plastic frame do you use under the green mesh over the parsnips ? Thanks.
Have been racking my highly qualified Horticultural brain, why so much rust around, have been experimenting here in New Zealand, my onion, garlic, shallots, elephant garlic and leeks share a bed each year, but don't come back to that bed for 9 years, that is reasonably new, due to our household now only being two. Planting the garlic deeper up to 100mm and in mid Autumn, seems to be working, even planted closer last year incase the crop failed. Buy new garlic from a reliable source, used some of own rust free this year, will be interesting to see how that goes. Have also been injured, so the garlic wasn't something I worried about much. But had grown no garlic from 2018 until 2023.
My shallots were a complete disaster this year mate. I lifted my EG this Tuesday and it's looking reasonable. Got my leeks in about three weeks ago. Great update and thanks for the heads up about fleece over the squash ATB Woody 👍👍
All 50 of my garlic we had to burn, I was gutted!! I have grown garlic for years very successfully, however this year garlic shared a raised bed with onions as I have done in the past and had good results. However the dreaded rust destroyed my garlic and to save my onions I pulled them all and burned the lot to avoid further rust to my onions. Yesterday I harvested my onions very pleased with the result. Have read I cannot sow garlic or onions in this bed for 3 years!! Would appreciate and advice from all you gardeners.
Hello mate shame about your garlic.I had a brilliant harvest this year if you need some new stock let me know. Mine in raised beds done better than in the ground. Your carrots look superb. All the best Nic 👍🧅🥕🧄
My garlic is decent this year but shallot and red onion sets all gone to seed so I going to try save some seed from them and see if I can do any better with seed
Had a look at my garlic and it looks similar, no size at all. Don't think it's cold enough now to give em enough cold so they split. Might have to stick the cloves in the fridge for a month before in future. No cold Winters anymore no Hot Summers anymore, just like Autumn all year these days . Absolute cack.
Quite right Dan. Good idea with the fridge, may do half and half next year just to compare results. Seed onions are slow bulbing up. Another 6,weeks and we will really see the nights drawing in 🙁
Love those mini munch - i have 4 plants and am getting 6-8 cucs twice a week from them. Its been such a cold and dark year with little warmth and very poor light levels everything is much further behind than usual.
Hi Nigel, sorry to hear about your garlic. While I don't grow garlic, I'm hoping not to get a similar result with my onions come September. We've had plenty of rain the last 3 weeks but got good harvest of broccoli, cabbage & salad lettuce. Also got my spring flower display planted in the front garden. This year stock, snapdragon & yellow pansies. 350 plants in all. Good luck with the rest of your seasons harvest. Cheers from down under. 👍👍😋😋
Did you do long red Florence this year Nigel, I followed your recommendation last year and they are amazing, much better than zebrune! The main crop tomatoes though are truly terrible, so far behind
Hi Steve , yes the LRF are bulking up nicely... in fact all of the seed onions appear to be on track. It is my worse season for slow maturing crops since I started my allotment. The runner beans have been in 8+ weeks and not reached to top s of the canes yet.
My garlic didn’t split either and the stems looked so teasingly promising 😢. Not a bad shallot harvest though 👍. It’s been an odd year across the globe Nigel but we’re gardeners we will always try again next year. Have a super day, Ali 🌞🇨🇦
If it any consolation nigel mine are the same and like some of the other lads tomatoes and onions and alot of other vegetables. It good to see it happening to the experts cause i taught it was me😂lol. We'll just put it down to the weather and a bad year.... we'll get it right next year nigel
Nice update Nigel, I think the weather may be a factor with the garlic, its been so wet and cold, (doesn't explain the non splitting though), don't forget to take the collars off this year!...Good luck for the season.
Not having the best of seasons myself mostly my own fault in April the start of the busy time i went in for open heart surgery then having a terrible year with slugs never seen so many but not to worry just enjoy the rest of the season and come back stronger next year
I'm just out side of Lichfield so close to you, I'm gutted your garlic has failed but also a little relieved because mines failed and I thought it was something I've done. I can't understand what's happening this year. My spring onions all failed, cucumber and tomato are really behind.. hoping it's just bad year
@@MuddyBootz it seems to be a very funny year. At first I questioned the compost as we have gone peat free. But now I'm thinking it could be the weather.
Nightmare Nigel. The few garlic of mine that did bulb up were okay, but I expect to get more than 5 decent ones from 20 or 30 planted! Just waiting for a few consecutive dry days before lifting my shallots. I have never know carrots to take as long to germinate at this year - 4 weeks for 4 different varieties on my plot, normally 2 weeks max!
Good tour there Nigel... Such a great variety mate and the quality is fantastic mate.. Its definately been a year for leafy greens aint it.... Peace Love and Namaste from Eden mate.. ATB Guru Murphinda AKA Tony
Hi Nigel, your structures do certainly help you with some lovely pest free crops. Heat wave did arrive and the crops are suffering. Nice tour mate. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
