I have the previous version and love them in very dry conditions. However they are absolutely lethal in slippery conditions, with mud just filling up the bottom of the shoe and turning them into a pair of skates. Definitely not All Terrain. Hard to justify buying another pair given our wet conditions in the UK.
Couldn’t agree with you more. I had that experience last weekend, after making this film, 20 miles in to a 100-mile ultra. My PUMA road shoes offered better grip and traction after these had clogged up! Perfect in dry conditions, but as you say, we almost always have some wet ground to cover in the U.K.
The plate isn't 100% carbon. You can confirm the percentage, but I think it's 70% carbon. I've got 180 km on it - I received an early pre-release. I like everything about it but the heel. The counter is weak. There is a half counter and then the shark thingy on the outside of the heel that doesn't do much for me. I need to do the runner's loop on this one, but not on my other 3 Puma shoes (Deviate 2s, Velocity 3s, Magnify 2s). This version of the Deviates are more stable than the last version, but I think that's more to do with the plate, which I think is stiffer then the last version. Thanks for your review!
Yeah they’re fantastic - since filming, I’ve had them on for every run this week. Just really enjoying their ride and cushion. The perfect shoe for tapering 👌
I bought both Deviate Nitro 3 and Velocity Nitro 3 for daily training. I can't decide which one to return. To be honest I feel Velocity Nitro 3 is a better "daily trainer". It's very versatile and despite not having a plate and superfoam can be every bit as fast as the DN3 with more comfort. The Deviate Nitro feels a little like overkill. I feel super trainers are just to add a little bit more spice to the running experience but they do take a away something and that is the authentic running sensation under your feet unless you give them a specific role in your rotation. Thanks for the video. I could never do it while running.
Really interesting thoughts Snowwalker - thanks for taking the time to comment. I really enjoyed the Velocity Nitro 2, it was the pair of shoes I was always grabbing before heading out until I received the DN3. There’s just something about the DN3 I really enjoy and can’t quite put my finger on when comparing the two. Where I think these shoes will really shine is mid-block, on tired legs and you need something to just add a bit of pep to the run, rest the legs a bit and have a bit of fun. It could also be a good introduction to carbon plated shoes for those who haven’t tried them out yet. There not quite as aggressive (or as expensive) as the race day supers.
@@TheVeganRunner I totally agree with you that’s why I can’t decide whether I should send them back or not. Have you tried Saucony Speed 4’s? If you have which ones do you like better?
I haven’t tried the Speed 4 or any shoe from Saucony for that matter although I’ve been interested to try them out. Almost bought the Endorphin Elite for my last marathon but went for Metaspeed instead, and so glad I did!
That’s amazing! Good luck for that ultra - hope the training is going well. I have a hundred miller coming up in a couple of weeks! Thanks for taking the time to comment 👍
So far I've tried Pasta Bolognese, Cajun Pasta, and Mexican Chili. Mexican Chili is great. I'll buy that gain. Both pastas were not good at all. I'm going to try the other rice based options, but I'll give Mac and Cheese a try.
Amazing to meet you and Sarah at the Expo! You are indeed a legend. Thank you for all of your advice, as a new runner it's been invaluable! Loved every moment of London apart from the cramps from 30kms, but got it done! The crowds were incredible!!
Hi Mark, thanks for watching again ☺️ Definitely the experience and time on feet of an ultra prepares you in lots of ways for a marathon. Just got back from London after running the marathon again this year - had a blast ☺️
@@TheVeganRunner I had to run my first marathon at Stratford upon avon on Sunday learnt many things to run faster on the next marathon in 10 days time!
@@markconnelly4009 Wow! That’s amazing - 2 so closer together and your first! That’s hardcore. Good luck with your next one and hope the recovery goes well.
Hey! - i've just dropped you an email about using this footage in this year's BBC coverage of the marathon. Would be amazing if you could come back to me as soon as you can. Thanks so much. Phil Hughes
hi i'm new to running, I estimate to be around 20 minutes in the 5k I own the adios pro 3 and the new balance Rebel v3, which would be better to race the 5k on the road with?
Yeah they are crazy pricey. The shirts I have though are now going two years strong, worn at least once weeks. So initial investment is high, but they pay for themselves in the long run.
"Weather is pretty good at the moment" - Famous last words on every marathon, half-marathon or when you step out the door for a long run during training.
Awesome video. One thing I noticed is that hardly anyone is wearing headphones. This is mad to me, I always run with music. I totally get wanting to experience the atmosphere and the sounds of the crowds, but I just assumed most people would still have music.
Thanks Sam 👍 90% of my training, I wear headphones, listen to podcasts etc. I’d strongly recommend not wearing them in race day. Primarily to soak up the experience as much as possible - it really was the highlight of the race for me. Also, it’s very busy on the course - this is great for chatting to the person next to you, making friends along the way, but also for your safety and those around you.
Well done you did do super and you stayed to positive throughout. Can I ask do you have to wear your race number on the front or can you wear it on your back or on your leg? Also what do you pack in your bag? As I was assuming I’d give everything I needed to my hubby but now I have realised it might be a long time till I find him so will be grateful for things like warm clothes she snacks in my bag.
Thank you! I don’t know whether or not you can wear your number in the back, but I think some people possibly wear on their leg. I packed a comfy change of clothes (hoodie, joggers which I threw over my race clothes and trainers/socks) and a banana and water too I think..! I also put my phone in there but was at my own risk, and as far I can remember tubes were free for racers so didn’t need it to pay for anything (but we were going straight to somewhere to eat) We received bags at the end too with a tshirt, water and flapjack. I didn’t actually get changed until I found Lee because it was a constantly moving crowd of us finding our way to the meet and greet area- took me forever to find our agreed spot!
@@rachelbillinghurst9367 ah thank you for your reply. I’m a blind runner so I was worried about how I would meet up with my family afterwards or even find my bag from the bag drop so I have applied to have a guide runner which would be especially helpful for those things. Interesting you didn’t have your phone on the run with you I think I’d want mine so if anything happened I could ring my family and let them know
Great video. I'm running at Brighton in April 24. May I ask how cambered the roads were? I've heard there quite sloped in some sections. Was hoping to use Prime X shoes but worried that if I'm running on angles that will be a bit too unstable.
Thanks Mr Bump! Hope the training is going well. I’ll think you’ll be fine in the Prime X. I don’t recall any roads with an aggressive camber - it was all pretty well surfaced and smooth running.
@@TheVeganRunner thanks for taking the time to reply. Training has hit a bump in the road 😂 nursing a tender achilles so all easy miles for the next week two.
@@mrbump7266 Ah that’s a shame - I hope it heals quickly. Definitely don’t rush it though, as you say easy miles - I have a friend who’s nursing an Achilles injury and it’s taken months, so slow and steady is definitely the best way forward. Best of luck, and I really hope you enjoy Brighton ☺️
My personal preference with watches - don’t touch them during the run at all, no pace advisers and no distractions from them. Nothing more frustrating than mess something up during the run, like clicking lap button accidentally twice or constantly get beeped by watch just because they fail to get gps signal and can’t get your speed right.
@@kmdsummon I see - I don’t have those alerts either, I tried them once on a run but it wasn’t helpful. Pace can be inaccurate due to gps error, so hitting the lap button at the mile marker seems like a good idea to me. Some people print out wrist bands with their target times for every mile, I might look into that as well.
Thanks for sharing, did my first parkrun (walk) today, and you are right. I'm already working out how to get quicker, how to not ache so much after, warming up and cooling down. Parkrun and strength training is my 60th birthday gift to myself. loving life.
That’s great to hear! Well done 👍 You will gradually get a little quicker most weeks as your fitness builds up and hopefully you won’t ache quite so much. And then who knows where it will take you! There are 60+ year olds running 16minute 5Ks at my parkrun….. so there’s your target! 😳😉
I run in similar conditions; back lanes of English countryside. The tarmac gets chewed up by tractors and theres usually a build up of mud and puddles and the odd smattering of manure too! Just wondering about my next shoe. Is it better to have a stability shoe for these surfaces to avoid rolling an ankle? I'd like to run faster so I'm considering the Novablast 4 but also the GT2000 12 TR. I've been in a Kayano 27 for three years and no injuries at all in that time. I'm not sure about a rockered trainer like the Clifton 9 as my knees ligaments are knackered. Any feedback much appreciated!
Hi Tom, thanks for your comment. I’d stick to neutral shoes if you’re a beau trail runner. I believe the support in support shoes wouldn’t be strong enough to stop you from rolling an ankle. Much better to have a more agile shoe, something a bit lower to the ground (something like the Deviate Nitro 2?) that gets you up on your toes/mid foot.
Thanks wholeheartedly for the advice and recommendation. Just the kind of direction I needed after having consumed an avalanche of shoe reviews! I always had a sneaking suspicion that my needs are more specific than the standard running reviews take into consideration. Which is understandable as they are trying to reach as wide an audience as possible. I have ordered the Nitro 2 with 15% off. The PumaGrip sole looks as though it will give just the right amount of traction without wearing down too fast. Combine that with the lower stack for stability, cushioned upper and carbon plate for support/rebound and it looks ideal! And its fairly lightweight too! I wouldnt have thought to look too far beyond Asics! Many thanks. Subscribed!
That’s great to hear Tom - I hope you get on with them! One of my favourite shoes to run in last year. I’ve got 350 miles in them so far and they’ve still got plenty of life left.
Thank you! You are going to love it - the crowd support pulls you all the way around and the atmosphere is incredible. I didn’t stop smiling! We’re heading there again this year ☺️ Have a great training block and see you at the finish line!
Thanks! I’ve taken them on 20milers - they’re a very comfortable shoe, well built and have so far held up really well. I think they’d be great for those Zone 1/2 long runs in an ultra plan. Good luck with the training 💪
Great vid. I'm having that same issue with the lack of stability causing overpronation in my right ankle, I have the V3s (I'm not a fast runner but want to do the very best I can and loved the Nike invincible with the zoom X) and just wearing them in the house to see what they'll be like I can see my ankle turning in. I love my Speed 3s but wanted a 'special' shoe for my first road marathon - Brighton in a few months - your other vids are on my list to watch :) Maybe they're not the shoe for me especially for such a long race and potentially being on my feet for hours and hours. Did the strengthening help?
Thank you 🙏 Yeah a little bit of strength work helped - I wore them for Brighton and absolutely loved them. I find the Alpha’s a lot more stable, and will probably be wearing AF3 at London marathon this year - especially if the latest version is like the originals. I’m finishing I get that pronation on a lot of shoes with a high stack - perhaps it’s just par for the course in such built up shoes! Good luck with training for Brighton - I loved it!
I realised I get it in the Asics nimbus 25 too, must be all the squishiness and not strong enough ankles. I'll try some strength exercises but still won't risk the VP3s for my first race - maybe if I come back for more lol I'm nervous enough as it is without worrying about my race shoes! @@TheVeganRunner
@@ourchannelofthisandthat I think because I used them in training and had prior experience with similar shoes at other races, I knew what to expect and was pretty sure I’d get through the race unscathed. Good luck with it all pal 👍
Parking is plentiful at the school and free 👍 The start has moved in the last few weeks to avoid running in that field with all the rain we’ve had. It’s now on the top path, running beside the river. Still no problem with space though ☺️ Might see you there this Saturday - thanks for watching.
Live in Cornwall not far from the coastpath hope to help ARC runners later this month from my little camper van , hand warmers hot drinks , and a few pop noodle type meals , had a hunt till I found a couple with the V for Vegan
Hope you’ve had a good weekend! A little chilly, but pretty decent weather for January on the coast. The ARC is a crazy race, I don’t know how people run 100 miles on that kind of terrain 😳
Thanks for subscribing 👍 We’ve filmed Heartlands and are in the process of putting the film together for it and Penrose we ran on NYD ‘21 you should find the film of that one in the Cornwall parkruns playlist. Hope to see you at a Cornish parkrun soon! All the best, Lee
Really enjoyed watching this, you done amazing!! I am doing the 2024 RTTS 100K as my first ultra and very nervous! What do you use to film your videos? Thanks!!
Awesome! Best of luck with the training - it’s such an epic race and distance. A good training block will seeing you feeling ready for the day and hopefully, a little less nervous! For this race I used an Insta360 one x2, for most of my races I’ll use a GoPro Hero10
Every week, the majority of Vegan Runners running parkrun (5K) are 2-3 minutes faster than the national average. There may be a little confirmation bias at play when you’re scrolling through your Strava feed.
@@runningclueless This works quite well for a lot of runners - try to take on a gel or equivalent every 30mins approx. Between now and then, try it out a couple of times, try different gels etc and see what works for you.
Congratulations sub 3 done, and I am preparing to run the Manchester Marathon 2024. The buildings and facilities along this route are very beautiful. Thank you for your video,
