We need to think about road safety. With SUVs becoming the standard motor vehicle and roads being built with only cars and trucks in mind, the streets would be super dangerous for any pedicab solution. We would have a ton of fatal collisions because drivers are bad at driving and pedicabs are small and below line of sight of most drivers. Of course, this is road design and vehicle choice problem more than it is a pedicab problem. But just saying, we would need to slow down speed limits to encourage alert driving, and build narrower streets to encourage smaller vehicle purchases before we could have a safe mass pedicab industry in NYC.

Unpowered kick scooters are underrated for the last mile. They are convenient to bring on a train and into buildings. For everyday cargo, delivery and granny carts are probably the best options.

I really like the pedicab idea. Here in Chicago I can think of at least one neighborhood/institution (Hyde Park/University of Chicago) that should seriously be looking into this idea

So being new to the US and living with friends in New Milford, New Jersey, every time I got off the bus in Bergenfield and had to walk more than a mile to my friend’s home, I stood there at a Stop & Shop parking thinking of where are the tricycles? Or in my hometown, we call them, “pot-pot.” The bus stop coming from New York is in Bergenfield. So I had to walk to New Milford. There is a closer stop closer to my friend’s house, the bus makes a left to head east, and I get off at the stop closest to the house. Unfortunately, that route only gets frequent service during morning and evening when people come home from work. And off-peak hours, the intervals are every 50 minutes. I sometimes hangout and get a snack at the Burger King, and wished that there were tricycles I could ride to get to my final destination. 🤣 Reality check: I was in the suburbs. Is hitchhiking an option? How pedestrian. Literally.

Really a cool idea, especially for the disabled and elderly. I also think NYC should add financial incentives for citibike. Clear up traffic, eco-friendly, and interactive use of tax dollars.

Honestly, the shops on the street should gather as a collective and pay for a vehicle that should just go up and down the street... like the hotels and some other establishments do in Thailand. BTW - Thea has this great looking design out on a shirt that is the city in a cup. Check it out... I ordered one...she did a great job in it.. my description is not doing it justice.

That New Yorkers would ditch in the tidal basin or even worse (or perhaps better) the reflecting pool. Actually, how well do they work in DC? Are they on the Mall? Not really needed there (maybe if you want to Smithsonian hop).

@@JimAllen-Persona They are very prevalent on the mall as well. There are specific places on the mall where they are allowed to be parked, but you can ride up and down it. They are used heavily both in the city and in the immediate surrounding suburbs. I use them a lot in Arlington. But you are right about New Yorkers attitude. That's exactly what will happen.

We use a shopping cart that folds up. They have 2 wheels. You can pull they on transportation then walk home.

What about those Kei Car minivans? Would be nice to see a fleet of them waiting outside of train stations. They’re very compact yet spacious. They have sliding doors and can be modified to have wheel chair access. To make it affordable, a company like Toyota or Honda could use a small car platform, and keep reusing it. That way, the cost to produce the little minivans goes down through economies of scale. It worked well with that dated body-on-frame Panther platform used in Crown Victorias, Towncars, and Grand Marquis. The price could be low enough for anyone to buy. But it’s the US. There’s no such thing as a small affordable car anymore. Which is sad.

Woodside recently got Citi Bikes. And I hope for the safety of those who ride them. Because the closest station is either 61st Street and 69th Street. And they probably live somewhere south of Queens Blvd in that part of Woodside.

It’s completely politically unsavory, so it’s a huge uphill battle, but we really need to price in the externalities of cars. The reason micro mobility solutions are so popular in places like Vietnam or Thailand is because of the economy. Taxis are too expensive for most people. If we want bike taxis to be economically viable, we need to make car taxis much more expensive.

The thing I miss most about living in SE Asia is having a Motorbike Taxi (GrabBike) that was usually substantially cheaper than a Car Taxi. I wish that I could get a motorbike ride in NYC

I like your thinking Thea! A few random thoughts: 1) The geographic distribution of pedicabs as they await customers would be a factor: where do they station themselves and how does a rider engage one? One suggestion would be an Uber-style app, though obviously more limited in geographic range. 2) For various reasons I hadn't ridden Citibikes for quite some time (I used to ride them frequently pre-pandemic), but had my first occasion to ride a few last weekend. The verdict was NOT good. Many bikes in the same station were inoperable, and the two we rented both had maintenance issues; and when we docked the bikes 30 minutes later many of the docking stations were inoperable as well. While I realize my one experience may not be representative of the entire network, Lyft's management of the system as the city's current last mile is not promising. 3) There are lots of comments here advocating for scooters; all of whom ignore your reasons why these aren't suitable for all people. 4) Good luck with the merch store!

This is a nice option in the more congested areas of the city but not so much in the areas out the outside borders

Flst/First mile should b fare integrated so that you can transfer to/from the subway and both the micro taxi and the subway get their share of the fare. You also need to consider weather. In cold, dark rainy/snowy weather, you might prefer heated bus over a pedicab.

There are so many elevated subway stations in the outer boroughs and driving around them is a terrible experience, it may not alleviate it but I'm all for this. it already works for tourists so expand it and anybody could do it, but the bike infrastructure has to be expanded

What wish I could see is light rail in Queens. They will never expand the subway through the borough, but light rail would have a better chance. I find it ridiculous that it’s easier to get into Manhattan via public transportation than it is to get to other parts of Queens. The bus is not enough. It’s slow and inefficient. Once you live in eastern Queens, it’s basically a car dependent hell hole

One thing to think about is that labor costs a lot of money in the US. I think that's why there's Citi Bike already but not this.

Busses are local? stop every 1/4 mile usually ~ 2 minute walk, we just need more of them, and more frequent
