@@LowestLogan Did you replace the busted bluray or you just fixed it? How did you fix it? I have a superslim and it wont read Ps3 games but can play dvd movies. :(

@@astroboy11 Mine had a mechanical issue with the slot loading mechanism (disc was stuck inside with a bunch of coins and stuff, I think some kids were using it as a piggy bank) so I was able to fix it myself by disassembling the drive. Unfortunately with the super slim it sounds like your failure is a bad Blu-ray laser (so mechanically it's fine it just can't read Blu-rays because the laser is burnt out). I don't know what's involved in repairing that but ifixit should have something about that. Sorry to hear about that though! I hope it can get fixed. Thanks for watching!

I kept ps1, ps2, xbox, 64,psp,ps3 slim,. Sadly I sold my Vader ps4 and also xbox 360. Thinking of repurchasing ps4 slim or pro if I can find it new also the xbox x series and ps5. I love the fat ps3 but I'd would have to buy a second hard with backwards compatibility

I had a fat that I got used back in August, but it got the yellow light of death. I took it apart, replaced the thermal paste and cleaned all the dust out of it. Put it all back together, still the same result. I got a slim now, and it runs perfectly and smoothly. It's an awesome console 🔥

@@autolife2785 Sorry to hear about the fat console :( It seems like most YLODs happening in PS3s these days are bad NEC Tokin capacitors degrading to the point that they can't power the CPU or GPU enough to initialize. Usually they can be fixed if you're good with surface mount soldering but if not, those Slim consoles won't let you down!! Enjoy the platform, thanks for watching :)

@@LowestLogan yep, I've been hearing that a lot too about those capacitors going bad. One of these days I may try and experiment on it again and see if I could get it working, if I ever have free time. I really liked the fat one. I remember at the time they came out, with the Sam Raimi Spiderman font when Spiderman 3 was about to come out, I thought it looked so cool.

Indeed. Just yesterday I found out the servers to fight night champion are back on the PS3. I would not play it wireless though. On Xbox you can even download boxers from the share option.

Just please don’t play the Silent Hill HD Collection one on PS3, play Silent Hill 2 and 3 on PS2 or PC instead. The sound mixing in the HD collection is so bad, sound effects are all over the place, you can’t even play with the original voice casts in Silent 3 HD and worse of all, the original art direction is completely butchered. Do yourself a favor and play on PS2!! Ps. If you do have japanese PS2 (NTSC-J) or other modded ones, you can play japanese version of Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4 on PS2 with full English support which comes with the discs already!. I do believe the japanese version of these games are way easier to find (and cheaper).

LOL I love this!! I feel the same way. I have an Xbox 360 as well but it just doesn't really have the same 'magic' to it that the PS3 always has. There was always just so much care put into every single (first-party) title & it ran games great with the hardware they had at the time. I wouldn't mind getting a few more consoles and putting SSDs in them just for playing around with development and everything! Thanks for watching :)

I really hope they keep Destiny 1 servers running for a long time though, it's great to come back to these older versions (even if the newer ones look better, I feel like more dedicated fans and more respectful players typically stick around on the older platforms haha). This!! The PS3 set many of the trends (now expectations) that we're seeing in modern consoles today. Even now it's still an incredibly versatile device. The 1TB SSD is definitely a good call too haha, with the back compat PS3 and a PS5 you can play every single title ever released for any PlayStation system which is just crazy when you think about it. Jailbroken PS3s are honestly so incredibly cool it's almost hard to justify getting something like a raspberry pi to emulate old games. The PS3 is such a versatile platform with CFW that I just can't recommend it enough!! Thanks for watching :)

I mean going from snes to psx was game changing. I honestly think we hit the ceiling with current gen and the games a service model is gonna hurt gaming in long term. Unfortunately I feel like the industry is moving more towards things like game streaming and even more ways of generating revenue (i.e. loot boxes) that ultimately hurt the experience and hinder creativity. There's no more beauty or value in trying to bring the very best experience to a limited hardware platform because every console is just a decently powerful PC lol. I wish I could have seen the transition from 2D to 3D, cartridge to CD, etc. But at least I can still explore them today and look at what impacts they made today! Thanks for watching!! The launch model Phat is an amazing system. I wish Other OS (the linux compatibility you mentioned) stuck around, really did an amazing job of showing what the system was capable of. The folding at home thing was also really neat & it really did show off the multi-threaded performance of the PS3 over the SPUs. The CELL processor could probably compete pretty well with modern consoles in multi-threaded workloads with efficient enough programs which is just crazy!! But the GPU wouldn't be able to keep up. Still incredible for such an old console though! Thanks again :)

@@LowestLogan i PS3 biggest selling point to me was all of the trailers for the launch titles. It was such a huge leap in graphics over the previous generation. Heavely sword, motorstorm, killzone, warhawlk and so many others shown at E3 before it launch. i think the consists what that sony was playing the smoke and mirrors game with there showcase, and that there was no way the system could pull off those level of graphics. This was true during the early run in the PS3 lifespan but once the game developers got acclimated to the orthodox way of developing for the system to game quality and performance started living up to what was first shown in the trailers.

This. These don't look bad on modern 4K displays but a TV from the same era will totally look better. I used to play on a 1366x768 Bravia lol, maybe not the most optimal but it was a good experience.

Hey there, sorry for missing your comment initially! Thank you very much for watching the video. Yeah used consoles have been going up lately, I'd say there are pros and cons to getting one today vs just shelling out for a newer platform. Me personally, I'm still a big GT5/GT6 fan so I prefer to play on PS3 and that's why I always recommend the Slim models if you can find one. The slim models CECH-21XX to CECH-30XX have the reduced power consumption 40nm RSX chip which runs FAR cooler and is much less prone to failure than the chips in fat PS3s, I have several of these consoles and all of them are working beautifully. The super slims are also an option but the disc drives have reliability issues. So get yourself a Slim if you can, watch out because some of the earliest slims have a slightly worse 65nm GPU chip, still a lot more reliable than the Fat PS3 units though. If you're comfortable with the process as well, take your console apart and apply new thermal paste to the chips, install custom firmware to control the fan speed manually and have it running cooler, and these things are basically indestructible. I might end up making a video about this process if I come across another console to restore. As far as price goes I would try not to pay more than $100 for a loose console, I've gotten deals by looking for used/for parts systems from local game stores so that could also be an interesting option. Hope this helps!

Haha hey man no worries, I think you got exactly to the point - it was such an intriguing console and the experience still holds up today even all these years later!! If you're looking to get a fat PS3 I would definitely recommend trying to get something like the CECHH01 model - those have the cooler running and somewhat more robust 65nm CELL and RSX chips so they're not as prone to failure as earlier models with 90nm chips. With some new thermal paste, a new 1TB or so SSD and a good cleaning these things will give you an awesome experience for not a lot of money!! If you're looking to buy one to fix you should definitely be prepared for some of the issues that these older PS3s did experience. Many YLODs are caused by bad NEC/Token capacitors which are surface mount soldered to the motherboard and a little difficult to replace, but you can replace them with high quality tantalum capacitors that won't give you any issues. There's been a lot of research done trying to learn why the PS3 gives a yellow light error and it's almost come down to a science and it can be a pretty fun way to get a PS3 on the cheap. Something like a bad disc drive PS3 could also be pretty cheap but if the disc drive controller board is damaged, you can't replace with without some CFW that lets you remarry a new drive to the PS3's motherboard. Anyway I'm rambling here too, I hope you find a PS3!! They're awesome consoles! Thanks again :)
