My Avenge-X came out of the box set at 2900 psi regulator and 2.75-3 turns in on the hammer spring. It was blowing apart / disintegrating pellets at 10 meters into a metal pellet trap. I degassed with the target of 1800 psi and 1-1/2 turns in on the HS to start. I missed the psi, 1/4 turn out on the regulator screw was too much and ended up at 2200 psi. I'm 1-1/2 turns in on the HS. That's what my owners manual recommends so not all bad. 2,000-2,400 psi reg / 1-2 turns in Hammer Spring. I don't have a chrono so I'm going to use a piece of 2 x 4 and go by penetration instead. Yes, I'm broke after buying the gun, scope, air compressor etc. PCP takes an investment but once you have everything it's very economical. Benjamin match 22 pellets are printing one hole groups @ 10 meters.
Short barrels also require a short burst of high pressure vs a long burst of lower pressure.. So in effect you have to run the regulator and hammer at a higher setting..
I have an Avenge-X that has creep (500 psi worth of it), I am on my second regulator (warranty) with no change.. The regulator can start at 2250 psi, one shot it will be down to 2000, after 10 shots it will be down to 1750 psi.. A few minutes later it will be back up to 2000.. I have noticed that If my main tank is over 3000 psi then the regulator will settle and hang around 2000 psi but under 3000 it wants to settle around 1750 psi - no rhyme or reason for me..
Don't randomly pick a regulator set point.. Have a goal velocity in mind (for example 18 grain, 880 fps). Select your pellet. 2 ways to set your regulator - Method #1, degas, turn regulator off and crack open slightly, set your hammer to 1-2 turns from lowest setting (1.5 turns is good), shoot and turn the regulator up until you reach your desired velocity, while turning the regulator up, if it keeps increasing in velocity then the hammer is overpowering the valve and you need to keep turning the regulator up and over the apex (max velocity) until you see the velocity come down to your desired velocity (as you increase the regulator the velocity should come down because the pressure is making it harder for the hammer to open the valve - this is what you want).. Method #2, this is called the "95% rule". you must have a goal velocity in mind (such as 18 grain 880 fps), 927 x 95% = 880.. degas, shut regulator off and crack open slightly, set your hammer to the highest setting, shoot and increase your regulator until you reach 927 fps then back your hammer off until you get 880 fps - you are done.. These methods removes, guess work and assures proper settings. You can now make adjustments to your hammer for accuracy, then you can reset your regulator to match your accuracy by repeating method #1 or #2.. So if your accuracy comes in at 840 or 900 fps resetting the regulator using these goals for velocity assures best settings for that pellet.. For your final setting Method #1 with 1 turn on the hammer is good.. For the final setting you don't have to start from scratch by turning the regulator way down, just back it off 1/4 turn and go from there, but make sure to turn your hammer down to 1 turn.. Doing things this way assures that you are not blistering your output valve with heavy hammer hits and by running low hammer pressures also makes your hammer spring last longer.. And you can reach your goals and accuracy with the least pressure on your regulator while still being on the correct side of the bell curve..
Accuracy happens when the fit of the projectile is proper, the weight of projectile is suited for the twist rate of the barrel and the pressure/velocity is correct. When these 4 things align then you have accuracy, no matter if it is gun powder, black powder or air power.. Pressure is pressure regardless if it is initiated by compressed air of gun powder..
Steve, you know, because I've espoused, that I love your style and videos, however I found this too non-specific and rambling, in MY opinion. I was thinking about buying one and I wanted to know more about shot-to-shot consistency regulation, tunability, SD, accuracy demonstration, reliable operation, in other words, what I needed to know before I made the decision to buy one. I'd like that presented in 20 to 30 minutes at most. Please stay safe and well, you and yours' ! Sandy (He Him)
Out of the box hw97 really is disappointing. It needs a lot of work to be done to shoot good. Tx needs it too but is a much better rifle in stock form.
I hope it's gona help someone but what setting helpt me...... that i bought the heavy hammer tunekit but used only the pelletdriver so now i did not heve the little air channel, and a set my Wildcat .25 sniper mk3 pressure at 120bar and now i have on wheelsetting-1 625ft/s and now it's safe to shoot rats at the farm and on wheelsetting-7 1004ft/s with the fx 25.4grain pellets and when i put it in wheelsetting-adjust then i have 478ft/s and so i only used the pellet driver from the set with the heave tungstun hammer in it. hope that i helpt someone with a Wildcat sniper mk3 no bottle.... safe shooting greatings from the netherlands Marinus
Not to be a jerk, at all, I love that Airgunning is so welcoming of a sport. But I am glad that there is a high barrier of entry for the gun store keyboard know it alls. We have so few of those people by quantity and percentage compared to the powder guys. Some people dont want to play any game unless they can posture at being good at it. Hard to do that in Air Rifle so those boys stay home. And yea they are all guys. This sport is wide open for women and children to join us and be welcomed. It is true that you are responsible for your kids and if they run past a firing line that they may be hurt. But we are airgunners. we are aware there are children around and new people who make mistakes sometimes. If a kid stepped forward one foot in front of the line 100 yards to my right and I shot straight ahead I would be pretty embarrassed at myself for not noticing and probably pack it in for the day. On the same powder range youll have a bunch of trash talk against the kids and parents and nobody will care.
hey bro! why do you think they are using such a short barrel in this?? i cant seem to understand, wouldnt it be even better with a slightly longer barrel.
Heard of these in the early 70 s or late 60s they were £28 back then,,,just paid £369 for the new one ,,but its so worth it ,,,magical engineering,,,will last 200 years,,
Just bought a 5.5 mm (.22) it is just as comfortable,,my opinion is that the rofling is more shallow and is super smooth,,,just love this sucker,,, it's the best,,,,will eat anything nicely,,,,yeah !
Hi Vince. No I'm still around. I just don't publish to AEAC Vlog anymore. All my latest content is at the other RU-vid channel "AEAC Home." Best, Steve
Hi guys, I have to get this off of my chest. I’ve watched countless hours of other RU-vidrs like Matt Dubber, Gerhard, Earnest Rowe and Ted’s Holdover. Truthfully I’ve learned very little from those channels as they are competition shooters and guard tuning advice at all cost. Steve has saved me countless hours by explaining the FX Maverick and the FX impact. Steve if you read this comment two things. Please revisit the valve adjustment on the M3 and make another video that explains it clearly. Because on your FX impact video we were all confused. And if you get the time we would love a similar video as this one for the FX M4. Thanks in advance
Hi Steve have you tried the 25 cal yet? i would like to know how much different it is than the 22 cal before i order one. Thanks and keep up the great work.
@@AlexTheLi0n first of all,bro i did not comment on you and secondly my brother i also have fx maverick sniper edition which holding it for a while it takes the first shot low, after a hour 40 to 50 fps.thanks.
But a very special shout out to you kind sir. For putting this video together. You my friend have given me the information needed in order to properly own this rifle.
Sir this video is pure gold. I bought a used FX Maverick .25 Sniper with STX Slug Liner, Optisan Optics EVX 6-24×50, 3 magazines, extra 500mm barrel kit barrel kit and Donny FL Fatboy1.0 moderator, oh and I had a carbon liner added for free. All for $2100. I think that a FX slug power kit is probably installed as well. But I will get that confirmed. For pellets I will tune the 500mm barrel. It’s genius actually because whomever owned the air rifle before me considered both slugs for long range and pellets 100 yards and under.
I don’t normally watch long airgun reviews but I just did and enjoyed every minute of it. Admittedly I’m considering this little gun as my next purchase in cylinder or bottle format but I know longer have any questions to ask, only a decision to make - cylinder or bottle? Brilliant stuff as always Steve. 🇺🇸🇬🇧
Big thank you for a great instructional video, exceptionally helpfull. Just a querry with regards Internal Hammer Spring setting - how do you determine 0 point? How do you determine the max/ min setting? I take counter clockwise increases the tension- FPS.
My Atomic XR .22 didn't come with any washer nor any of the two hammer spring adjuster that you discussed. Are those supposed to be included? I got mine at Central Florida Airguns which obviously gets them from AOA distribution side.
I love your work. My Atomic .22 arrived today. After a nap I'll completely watch this video. Need to adjust trigger. It's about 5 pounds out of the box! On anotehyr note, I'd like to sehnd you a Stoeger XM1 Ranger and/or Scout in .22 and/or .25 for you to review. Extremely accurate. Mine gets ZERO SD ! IF YOU WANT I'LL SEND YOU CHRONO AND TARGET.
