The Panasonic GH7 is MAGIC. BUT... Not so fast… Consider this...

I'm certain the new Panasonic GH7 is an awesome camera. Perhaps even generational in all that it can offer to filmmakers and photographers, but for me, I believe that for most people watching RU-vid for information on what camera to buy, grabbing something like a Lumix GH5 might be a much better way to go. A legendary camera in its time, and still to this day for many filmmakers, you can not only save in excess of $1500 if you go that way, but you will also still have a camera that shoots 4k, 60fps, and a plethora of other codecs to choose from, great slow motion capability in camera, a superb log profile, it has a full size HDMI port, a full array of filmmaking assist tools like waveforms and vectorscopes, anamorphic support, great focus assist tools as well, some of the best stabilization of any camera, and a huge selection of lenses and the ability to adapt pretty much any vintage lens as well. There's plenty more reasons, I mean, the GH5 is on par with many highly regarded "cinema" cameras, like the Blackmagic line, for example. And most importantly, the image quality is sublime, and so... just wanted to put that out there. Save some money, grab an incredibly capable camera that you can grow with and possibly never have to upgrade until you wind up working on set and have to connect with other artists, but as long as you are a solo shooter, the GH5 can be your go-to camera for a very long time.

No camera will ever be as revolutionary as the GH5 was. Still fully competitive today.

I think when you look at other cameras that were out at that time, it’s pretty clear why the GH5 is legendary. I just got one recently because I needed a backup for my S5, and so now I know. I think you’re absolutely correct. This camera is so ahead of its time. And to this day, is a movie making machine.

Damn bro.. I tapped on your video expecting to see/hear something that could’ve deterred me from making a GH7 purchase, and instead I got an amazing, thoughtful, down to earth insight into why I wanna make the purchase in the first place, on top of showing awareness to Indigenous people!!! You have a new subscriber my friend 🙏🏾

This is my favorite kind of comment to wake up to, because so many people roll their eyes when I start to add what I feel are important ideas into my videos. A lot of people roll their eyes, they just don’t wanna hear it, and that’s why we are where we are throughout the world. And now in the United States. The GH7 sounds like an unbelievably epic camera, I just hope people take that tool and fix the world with it, because I think artists, more than anybody else, can really save us from destroying one another. Thanks so much for coming through, I really appreciate it and I don’t take your time for granted. Have a beautiful day.

I dig your vibes, reminds me a lot of Michael Keaton. I'm excited about the gh7 and looking to buy soon to actually replace a Sony full frame. I used to use gh5 and frankly I miss it. Sony makes things overly complicated and the menus on Lumix just make sense to me. I got the most compliments and people asking "what camera do you use" back when I made client videos with the gh5. Excited to go back.
@RockWILK

Ha!! I’ll take that as a compliment, thank you. I started with a Sony a6400, and I enjoyed it, but once I moved over to Panasonic, it was just much more fun. I can’t really explain why, but I just enjoy it. Maybe I had just learned so much more at that point that it could’ve been any camera, but between my S5 and the GH5, I have no plans to go anywhere else for a very long time. :-) I’m sure the GH7 is a killin’ creative tool, good luck with it! And thanks so much for coming through, I really appreciate it.

The GH5 was ground breaking. The GH7 just adds the autofocus that should have already been inside the GH6. Still no open gate 60.

@RockWILK Месяц назад
To me, it looks like a pretty cool camera, especially when you consider the price. But I agree, if you have a GH6, unless you absolutely need auto focus, why upgrade? Actually, to me, unless you’re buying a camera for the first time, or maybe your upgrading from a fixed focal length camera, some kind of point and shoot, and maybe you want to get a little bit more serious, but other than that why upgrade from any camera made in the last seven or eight years? :-) In any case, thanks so much for coming through and for commenting, I really appreciate that.

Hi Rock Wilk, ordered my S5 . Quick question about SD cards. There’s a UHS 1&2. Make much of a difference? I’m going to use for photos and video (video all the way up to 4k max) , not the Atmos 5.7k thing. Is is just the writing speed that makes the difference. What do you recommend. Got the S5 with 20-60mm @ £849.10 new from Panasonic. Cheers thanks
@RockWILK
@RockWILK Месяц назад
This is pretty much the only thing that I don't like about the S5. That uhs2 slot is only good for high-speed still photography. There's absolutely no advantage for video even in 4k. Honestly, I don't even have anything in that slot. I just use one SD card in the UHS1 slot. I think this was the worst decision for this camera, but it is what it is. Also, I don't know if you can put a uhs1 card in the uhs2 slot, I've never tried, I'm afraid something might get stuck, and I haven't been able to find any information anywhere about that. If you can, I would put a second uhs1 in there. But like I said, I'm not sure you can do that, so I have never done that and unless you get specific information from Panasonic, I would stay away from that if I were you as well. In other words, I have no idea about that. :-) Oh, and CONGRATULATIONS!!! You got a great deal on an incredible camera!

@@RockWILK Thanks! 🙏🏽 Yes I've being using the GH5 since 2017 and the best thing that ever happened to me is not having money to "upgrade" because that forced me to master my camera and it forced me to gain skills in order to make up for the limitations of the camera which I'm forever grateful. I love to see people like you who aren't afraid of using M43, I feel big creators give bad rep to M43 just because of sensor size. Keep making great content! 😁

@@CABRALCREATES every great film was shot in super 35, people act as if full frame has been the standard when it's really kind of brand new. Personally, I think you can get the same quality from any of the formats including micro 4/3. You just have to know what you're doing. There are plenty of micro 4/3 cameras that are actually legendary, so it's all just marketing hype. Keep up the amazing work, I'm a huge fan of what you do, and thanks so much for the kind words, I greatly appreciate them.

As I might have mentioned before, I shot a feature film with the GH5. It was actually well received in the three film festivals we got it into. I'm using the Sony FX30 now, and it is quite good. Although the GH7 has features that really bring a lot to the table for one camera. The real reason I'm replying is that I just wanted to say that I am really impressed with your content. You are probably one of the few content creators that is clearly being honest about your experiences. And I like how you work in social commentary into your videos as well. I created a second RU-vid channel a while ago that was meant for random thoughts and ideas. Just a place to talk about a variety of issues and topics. Listening to you I am inspired to start creating content for my second channel. Given all the hostility around political and socio-economic issues, not to mention the atrocities in Gaza, it's clear that a lot has to be shared about these topics. People should be aware of what is going on, and what is being done in their name as a citizen of this country. Thanks for your inspirational content. I'm so glad I found your channel.
@RockWILK
@RockWILK Месяц назад
First of all, where can I see the film? Is it available to view? Second, I'm positive the FX30 is epic. I almost bought it when I grabbed my S5, but I was about to shoot my film, and a lot of it was at night, and so I opted for full frame. I had my vintage Minolta lenses that are all full frame, and so, a few adapters and I was off and running. I was coming from an a6400, so I was tempted to stay in Sony land, but I'm glad I wound up with the S5. I love it, and it suits my needs perfectly. And now with a GH5 as well, I'm so good to go. ;) I agree regarding the GH7. All the filmmaking assist tools, anamorphic support, all things considered, I think it's amazing. As far as the rest.. I come from the theater, I'm a solo theater performing artist/playwright, and I have always been a very outspoken activist type artist, (much to my detriment often times, at least in the "business"), but I never bow to the "industry" when it comes to what I want to write about. And like I often say, to me, as artists we have an incredible opportunity to speak on things that people might actually receive with an open heart and mind because we can make those things beautiful. Even the difficult things. Like Genocide, for example... And YES, this world, and especially this country are so fu*&ed up at the moment, I think now more than ever we are called as artists to respond to that and to contribute in as positive a way as possible. To bring people together. To stop all the violence and oppression, or at least to try and do the best we can do. If I inspired that in you, I am honored because that means more to me than any other kind of recognition with any of my work. On RU-vid and beyond, so thank you for that, and I look forward to seeing what you do. And what you have done. Can you guide me to your second channel? My channel is a mess because I just put everything here. I don't do RU-vid very well. ;) Anyway, thanks so much for the kind words, and I really look forward to checking out your work, and here's to making great art with the FX30!!

The most impressive thing about the GH5 is how better the fine details are in 4k and c4k compared to the GH6 and G9II (and probably GH7 without proreraw). The GH5 and G9II has better moiré control and less noise in low light but the image has less details. To get almost as good details than the GH5 you need 5,7K, which drop the IBIS performance compared to 4K, also the 120fps mode is not available in 5,7K. In the end, the 5,7K mode in the GH6 has worse IBIS than on the GH5 4k ... Nobody in the reviews of the GH6 and G9II speaks about this. They only want you to buy the new cameras. But as I own the GH5, GH6 and G9II, I can see the difference between them. I think and I hope C4K Proresraw on the GH7 will get at least the same fine details than the GH5, but the files will be much heavier and the post processing will be more time consuming. My only gripe with the GH5 is the colors, they are in my opinion much nicer on the GH6.
@RockWILK
@RockWILK Месяц назад
This is a really interesting comment to me. I recently bought the gh5 as a backup for my S5, and I'm in love with the image. I haven't used any of the other cameras that you mentioned, but I think the gh5 is very special, and I agree with you, the colors are a little weird. I have to work hard to match them with the s5, they're a little pushed towards red, but other than that, everything I shoot with the gh5 looks like a movie. And I like what you said about the aliasing, I haven't seen any since I've been playing with it. What's really surprised me is the low-light performance of the gh5. It looks beautiful shooting at night. And the iso performance is really powerful even though it doesn't have dual native iso, I find it to be really pleasing even at high ISO settings. Thanks so much for coming through here and commenting, I really appreciate it. It's a solid point of view for people to take into account for sure.

@@RockWILK My pleasure, and I agree about the GH5 image looking like a movie, the noise is pretty high and even at 200ISO when cropping a bit I can see some noise even in good light, but at least the image looks free from heavy temporal noise reduction, I think it is why this camera look very filmic. I think the best recording mode on the GH5 is Open Gate, the digital sharpening is very very low on this mode.
@RockWILK
@RockWILK Месяц назад
@@aiseurnae5976 yes! I do the same thing on my S5. I shoot in anamorphic mode with aspherical lenses and just crop to 16:9 and it looks amazing. I also shoot a lot of anamorphic, so both cameras are great and are really open gate even though they’re not officially open gate. :-) But they are.

@@RockWILK Ah yes S5 is not truely Open Gate (as opposed to the S1 and S1H, both are true Open Gate) because there is a crop, so the full sensor is not covered. However your GH5 has a true Open Gate mode because the full sensor is used, the same way than when you take stills.

I think the gh5 was actually ahead of its time given where the technology was at that moment. But I totally agree with you that the gh7 is what everybody was expecting out of the gh6. Maybe with a couple of extra little things, but I think the main thing for most people was that they wanted that autofocus. Also they had to address the streaking issue, and so the gh7 appears to almost be a perfect camera for most people. I don't see how anybody can really complain unless they are absolutely against using a micro 4/3 camera, which is just a matter of preference. Thanks so much for coming through, I really appreciate that.

@@RockWILK I agree, both the GH4 and GH5 were groundbreaking. I can't say the same about my GH6 and G9II (and probably the GH7), both decreased the image quality in 4K, not about the colors and DR, but about fine details rendering.
