While it's fantastic to go to far flung destinations to fly fish, there are some really nice local fisheries that we sometimes overlook. In this episode I fish one of Sydney's small creeks on foot for the iconic Australian Bass. It's one of my favourite ways to spend a half day in the outdoors, keeping it simple and soaking in some of the amazing Aussie bush that we have right on our doorstep.

i go fjell fishing for brown trout in sacandinavia every year, also only small creeks on 1200 m height, there are a lot of slow pools aswell, the fish gets spooked realy fast, you catch most of the time there, but its not only about the catch, its the time at the water, no noise, relax, best hobby in the world

That sounds fun! My wife is from southern Sweden, I have been over there a couple of times but I’ve never been fly fishing in Scandinavia yet. :)

They are miracles, fantastic native fish, a little bit like small mouth bass from the US but a bit more adapted to warmer water I’d say.

Thanks Jon! Yeah I reckon bass fishos everywhere tend to be a bit tight lipped - best thing I did was join a bass fishing club called Bass Sydney, that really opened things up for me. Good luck and glad you enjoyed it! :)

Hi Darcy, thanks for watching! I don't want to reveal publicly where this is as it is in suburban Sydney and will likely get hammered....but if you look me up on Instagram and PM me I might be able to help you....Cheers, Peachy. ;)

water too warm 4 trout ?
@PeachyFlyFishing
@PeachyFlyFishing 10 месяцев назад
Yep, water is too warm, in general we have native bass in our coastal rivers and creeks, trout in the higher altitude inland rivers. :)

Yeah it does get pretty warm down there, especially in summer. But that’s when it fishes best too, when the cicadas are deafening….:)

@@PeachyFlyFishing a quick question what weight rod would you use for bass ?

I like a 6 or 7 weight. I’ve actually just shot a vid that covers this, will be posting it very soon hopefully…:)

Love the video Steve. What sort of set up you run for bass? 6-7wt? Leader length 9ft? Do you use a tippet?? Appreciate all the content.
@PeachyFlyFishing
@PeachyFlyFishing Год назад
Thanks Clinton! Yes it’s a 6-7 wt rod, a Sage Bass II Bluegill. I run about an 8-9 ft leader of 20lb tapered down to 12lb Maxima to help turn over. The line is a 7wt Rio Predator which works really well for this kind of fishing. Thanks for the kind feedback! :).

@clintongriffiths9963 Год назад
Hey Steve, apologies just one more question. You leader, is that 9ft total? Inclusive of leader and maxima? How long is the maxima 3ft?? Thank you mate
@PeachyFlyFishing
@PeachyFlyFishing Год назад
Yes 8-9 feet in total. It’s easier to control and be accurate with a shorter leader like that, especially with a larger fly and lots of trees around. I usually just taper down, maybe 5’ of 20lb and 3-4’ of 12lb, something like that. :)

Just to let you know - I enjoy your production style and find the videos informative. It’s always great to be shown the fly used also :). Thanks to you I bought a MaxCatch 8wt with natives in mind. Went to the backyard to learn to fast aaaannnd it broke. Hopefully just a dud but they’ve provided quick service and a replacement for that broken section was in the mail the day after contacting them. Not trying to promote a product just telling the story of my start to fly fishing so far (it’s not going great!). But started talking to a friend of a friend and he has one of those practice rods, and is willing to teach proper technique and set up. Fly fishing seems a lot more complicated than regular lure fishing.
@PeachyFlyFishing
@PeachyFlyFishing Год назад
Yeah absolutely it's more complicated, that's why we love it! :) Sorry to hear about your rod....best advice I can give is join a club straight away, and get some casting lessons at the start! :)

Not sure what region you're in, but a few clubs like Sydney Flyrodders have country memberships. We organise various trips away to different places and people from further afield sign up to come on the trips. Anyway I hope you get it happening! Just be careful not to form bad casting habits at the start that are hard to break later on.... ;)
