I lived in NYC (Brooklyn, near Cobble Hill/Red Hook) for a year. Loved it, mostly. My apartment was right next to the BQE and the noise was unbearable. It was just too expensive though, and that was 20 years ago! Only been to Berlin once and vowed to go back, so much to see. Would I live in NYC again? Probably not but it's still a special place for me.

Jeez I can imagine...I lived near JFK for most of my life and it was always extremely loud.

as someone who has only lived in hamburg my whole life, i cant really do a comparison myself. BUT something i personally really like about cities is their history. berlin especially has such an interesting history with being split in half for decades for example. to me, this is worth pointing out. im not really familiar with NY-history but i guess its hard to get even close to the very versatile history of berlin. even as someone who loves hamburg like nothing else, i must admit that berlin history has a lot more to offer objectively xD edit: im aware the history of a city doesnt affect your personal daily life that much in general, but on the other hand, i do think it has an impact to how a city feels and functions

Valid observation! I think that's something that subconsciously drew me to Berlin (I'm obsessed with the wall and pretty much all things related to that time period). I was just saying I HAVE to visit Hamburg someday 😅

There is a great comic book trilogy about "Berlin" by the Canadian author Jason Lutes, and it has also been translated into German. You can get the whole trilogy with a preface as a hardcover Sammelband, and I can highly recommend it to everyone interested in the history of Berlin, its architecture and everyday culture in the 1920s and 1930s. Both the storytelling and the drawings are really interesting and well researched.

Yeah also living in east berlin isnt all that expensive when u in a Genossenschaft west yes ofc its expensive theres a lot of tourism and little to no housing unions so u pay double and tripple the price i pay for the same space on the other side of the city

Buff, both cities are just amazing... I think I prefer Berlin just because it's way more affordable, but both amazing

NYC is great to visit, but the fast pace and high cost of living would be too much for me to live there. I haven't been to Berlin yet, but with its food, vibe and affordability, I think that would be my preference.

NYC is my favorite city outside Germany - I have been 3 times in NYC. but I would say that Hamburg is more like NYC, just smaller.

Oh my, what a tough choice. As a Berliner, I fell in love with NYC the moment I saw its skyline appear while still on the LIRR. It's _the_ most amazing city ever. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most expensive cities ever, at least if you want to live that NY lifestyle shown in movies and TV shows. Don't get me wrong - I also like the less Manhattany parts of New York, but I feel if I could only afford to live in a non-downtown area or even in New Jersey then I could just stay in Berlin. I met up with a former colleague while visiting NYC, and he and his fiancee both had postdoc positions with a university in New York (State, not City), but all they could afford was living so remote that meeting for a beer in Manhattan meant an hour on public transportation for them. If I could afford a nice (not necessarily super spacious - just big enough for me and my stuff but definitely not in a shitty condition) apartment somewhere in Manhattan though and _still_ had enough money to have, for instance, some of NYC's amazing New York Italian pizza or a Shake Shack burger at the very least twice a week, then I'd hands down choose NYC over any other place in the world. However, since this isn't ever gonna be the case I'll just remain in Berlin with my lazy big butt.

I say the same thing! If I can’t live in a part of NYC where everything is easily accessible and I don’t have to drive or take the train for 2 hours, then what’s the point? I did that for most of my life and I don’t have the energy for it anymore.

I'll always be a small-town boy at heart. I did like the vibes of San Francisco and Prague, though, at least for a vacation. Live there? Not so sure. Hamburg felt alright, too.

This comments are on point. I live in Berlin now, I lived in New York on and off for ten years. I agree that I have a love hate relationship with New York - I agree that New Yorkers are actually friendly people
