Thank you Shannon for this episode! I find you followed a very interesting processto decide what to cast on and choosing yarn that you want to use as a starting point! I am right now trying to do the same. Working on tge Trouville sweater from Sophie Ochera but I am trying to make it work from 2 colours of Jamieson and Smith that I have enough of for the main colour. Had I been shopping, I probably would have chosen different MC. I had to rip back my yoke many times so far because I didn’t want to swatch for color combinations ( there are like 10 + different colours on the yoke). I finally decided decided to go for a rather safe palette: all warm fall colours. I still may have to rip back at some point but trying to minimize that. I find it difficult to get a good color combination when there are lots of colours being used. It is a fun challenge though! Love you and all your content ❤
I have that sweater queued! It's so adorable! I've got to get back to color work yoke at some point! They fit so nice ❤️ Sounds like you hit on a workable palette! Hope it goes smoothly!! ❤️❤️❤️
Frankly, I’m such a fan of your “cast on with me” 😘 I love to hear your thinking process. I’m ordering a Japanese color book. Thank you so much for sharing…
Very inspiring Shannon! I have a similar Japanese book of colour combinations that I love but haven’t used that closely before but this may change. Loved seeing you work through and all the swatches - this is what I do too, even if I keep yarn attached and unravel once I’ve picked colours and gauge. People who moan about swatching don’t understand that seeing the yarn knit up is such an important step in achieving a garment that you love. I think you ended up with the perfect colours for each knit. And I hadn’t seen the Stowaway, just love it, thanks for showing it and love the black and white
Happy to spread the love for swatching!! It does really help, and beats having to unravel a full size project! I love the test knitters versions of Stowaway. They're so inspiring! ❤️❤️❤️
Love this format of podcasting!! I am interested in how you work through colors and patterns, keep it up! I love, love your final swatch, can't wait to see it cast on. It's going to be stunning! Diane in SC
I really like your colors for the Inge sweater solo. I put that sweat in my queue, and I am tempted to knit it in the original colors. I can't wait to see yours finished. Happy knitting.
I really love how you've chosen to use that yellow yarn. I think the combination of the bright body with the colorwork sleeves will have a neat funky vibe. Thanks for letting us in on your decision making process.
Frankly, not a big fan of your "cast on with me", episodes but this was interesting. I do wonder, though, why are you doing any colorwork except maybe stripes with DK, given that you fingering is supposedly best for you. DK in allover colorwork makes it TK (triple knit, really really thick and warm)...
Funny you say that about not being a fan of this style. Folks whine that podcasts all follow the same FO-Wip format- “so dull & predictable!”So I try something different- and get far less views- At some point I’ll stop this format but for now I’m having fun. Also kindly realize I make this much money doing all this work on my channel -> $0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ and get this many sponsorships -> 0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ As to why knit color work with Dk? Because not everything I knit is practical. That would be so boring. I give away the sweaters that I don’t wear anymore. Some as soon as I cast off. It’s how it goes sometimes. I enjoyed reading your point of view! Thanks ❤️
I do not know about your views and earnings and sponsorships, and even less about your expectations of rewards from doing the YT videos. All I can tell you is that I did not like at all your cast-ons video so far (too slow for me...), maybe I gave up on them too quickly, since I like your regular videos quite a lot. This time I was drawn to watching because of the Japanese color book and really just for that, since you mentioned it quickly in the beginning - a friend of mine was showing me the booklet a couple of weeks ago and I was intrigued. Anyway, I agree there are sooo many podcasters doing the same cookie-cut predictable shows, and I am one of those that find them dull and at most just skim through practically all of them, although I used to follow many enthusiastically - I like yours much better probably because of your personality (which I like and enjoy) and different aesthetics (which is absolutely not mine cup of tea). IMHO: there is a lot whining from the podcasters about the view counts lately, this is also something that is getting dull and predictable. Probably the market of knitting podcasts is getting overly mature... I recommend questioning yourself thoroughly WHY you are doing the videos. You gave me impressions that it amuses you, that it is just for a pure hobby and just pure joy of sharing YOUR knitting ways. I understand it would be great if getting lots of views, praise, money, sponsorship - but this is realistic just for a few lucky ones. I would miss YOU if you stop podcasting, but continue doing it ONLY if doing it makes you happy, do not do it if for profit - you'd be better off cleaning other people's homes in this time :-( All the best <3
@@anciify Oh, totally!! No worries! The ONLY reasons I do these videos is for fun, to share the love the process of knitting, and to meet like minded, knit-loving people! I have zero interest in monetizing this channel or experience. I see what it has done to others. No need for me to clean people houses either- LOL 😂 but yeah- I hear you- at least that would be a more bankable hustle! Do I need to say that I'm here for the fun of it more often? I forget that people come and go 😮💨 I know you're a long time viewer and I appreciate that!! I've enjoyed chatting! ❤❤❤
Love your color ideas and need to checkout that book! I have had FOMO for so long wanting one of Amy’s bag and finally got one!….green apple sock bag and it’s beautiful.
Using luxury yarn in a pattern that I haven’t knit before is always a bit scary for me. Did you feel this way with your Lamb & Kidd yarn? Or with other pricey yarn you’ve used? I am a big fan of Clinton Hill Cashmere (love their Sophia cowl). I have had to take a big breath before starting their garment patterns but they’re well written/designed thus so far so good. As always, great pics.
Hmm, I think I'm scared making the purchase, but once I own it and get going, I'm more focused on how the project is progressing. I've knit two sweaters in Clinton Hill! I love Becky! She's so sweet and her product is 🙌 It's interesting that the luxury fibers tend to be so drapey. I think if you keep that in mind, you'll be fine! Plus you can always frog! ❤❤❤
I absolutely LOVE the yarn you spun!! I could see it as an all over Colorwork sweater with that as the contrasting colour throughout. Maybe like the Laneway Sweater. The duller colours come from having so many colours mixing. I think it's beautiful!!!
Hi Shannon, Love your podcast, especially all your knits. I'm so motivated by you, to try socks...beginner knitter here. On my needles is a shawl - Just finished two crochet blankets for my children. A labor of love for sure.
It was very sweet Shannon just the right length for a busy morning ( I usually watch in the evening ) The sea well tee is lovely. I really like wearing linen in the summer
Fun as always Shanon! Your Sea Swell Tee looks fabulous. Apologies for the tedious colorwork :). Love your latest spin and immediately thought of another Chiaro Scurro sweater with those two. ❤
Thank you!! Hahah!! It was totally the fiber, not the pattern 😉 Oh, linen! That would be interesting and definitely work in a pattern like that! ❤️❤️❤️
OMG, cute little Egg with his new pal! Love it! I don't comment much, but I do watch! I'm getting more and more tempted by spinning, and even though I do watch you, I don't know if I know what type of spinning wheel you have. Do you think a pedal wheel is better than an e spinner? Just curious. I always love to see how your spins come out. And what you knit always inspires me as well! Take care. (Oh, and I have an issue with reds too. I love them in color work samplers (xs), and I love those autumnal colors that have some red tints in them. But wearing red? Always gives me pause, despite people saying I look good in it!)
Red-- yes, that's meee, too!! 😂 Thanks so much!! I have a Kromski Sonata, double treadle. It's very versatile with all the attachments. Although, I'm planning on getting an e-spinner (Hansen) later this winter, or early next year. I love the rhythm of treadle but for plying, I can see the advantage of an e-spinner. For some reason, my wheel isn't great for plying. My legs often get tired; it's harder to make the wheel spin, before I am ready to stop plying 😮💨. When I learned, my spinning teacher told me to get any wheel I could afford and not stress too much over whether it was the "right" wheel. I searched craigslist that week and found the one I currently have for 1/2 what the retail price is. It felt like fate! I guess what I'm saying is-- get one and just start going. I do think controlling the wheel speed with feet while drafting with hands is easier than trying to draft and control the speed with your hands. I remember, I didn't want to take my hands off the fiber. You'll figure out what works for you by doing! It would be good if you have a shop or guild where you could take a class or try wheels out. So glad you commented! ❤️❤️❤️
So so sorry about the trip and the covid. We had the same happen in July. UGH!!! We have gotten it several times ourselves. Take care of yourself and eat a lot of vitamin C foods! No, I did not know the textured fiber spinning was hard on the hands and wrists! Good to know! A wealth of info here and much thanks goes out to you for all this work.
Julie is a lucky little girl! I now have 3 grandchildren and am currently making the second of 3 cardigans. We live near Atlanta so I'm not sure how much they would actually use sweaters. Your yarn is gorgeous!
I feel the same about you with stash. I counted some to add to ravelry for cataloging and I have wayyy too much. I love all your projects; They're beautiful. Your grandaughter's sweater is so cute!!!! Love the furr babies. Rsv is miserable, and I was also extremely stuffed up with Covid. Feel better, Shannon! Hugs! - Kimberly
I’m glad you can commiserate! It’s so satisfying to send yarn off to good homes 😄 Thanks so much!! Being sick is another layer of challenge I’d rather do without!! 😮💨❤️❤️❤️
Hey Shannon, It was interesting to hear and watch your challenge and the struggles you dealt with while casting on. And just thought I would mention I think you will prefer the Green yarn vs the red, as you love turquoise so much. StitchedbyMimi
Love the sweater for your granddaughter, I love yellow, but not sure how it will finish, - good luck with that, mention of pattern used different yarn ? Looking forward to hearing what you end up doing - you are so talented, sure you Will figure it out. Thanks for another fun podcast !!😊
Your cast on does look off... but I use alternating cable cast on for my socks all the time and it doesn't look like that... not sure what the difference is 😕
I love the cable cast on! It is my go to because I really struggle getting the right amount of yarn for a long tail cast on, especially when it is LOTS of stitches. I also really love the edge that it creates. My first lesson learned, someone else has also mentioned, if you are holding yarn double, cast on with just one yarn; it makes it much easier! My second lesson learned is that if my project is in the round, I work the first row flat and then join in the round.
Not wanting to be intrusive, but why did you decide on change? After 10 years, how tough, I am in a house and going through making decisions on moving, lost my hubby (a couple of years now) mine is going back to North from our summer retirement home we have been in a lot of years - looking at apartments etc,n the northern prices are a “little” daunting. - you are an inspiration😊
The short version is that I felt very isolated in the neighborhood I lived in & I was renting and it was time to buy. I wanted to downsize as well. I wanted a city neighborhood where I could easily walk or take transit. I knew a house would be too much maintenance and worry for me so a condo was a perfect fit. It hasn’t been all smooth & there were many compromises but overall I’m super happy! And I do wish I did it sooner! There’s a wide range of prices in the area I’m in. I think a good realtor can help target properties that fit your budget! Good luck with the search and plans!! ❤️❤️❤️
