I'll try this... but I suspect that actually standing so wide is challenging for many recreational players simply because we aren't flexible enough. Also this kind of intensity consumes a lot of energy and may leave us exhausted early in a match, often against an opponent that isn't so good that the kind of explosive reaction that is facilitated by a proper ready position is even necessary.

Agree. Also, people could have knee or ankle problems at this age

Amazing stuff. Really shows you how important videotape is, as described in your book. It’s interesting because twice the normal width of a typical man’s shoulders 18” ends up being wider than the doubles alley. This video really demonstrates how low and wide you have to get.

Super helpful Ian. How we perceive ourselves acting is so often not actually what we are doing. The camera is the most useful tool for showing us what we are really doing. Thanks for all your great work Ian.

Btw that info you brought about ball of the feat together with leaning forward is Gold. Then you can throw your bodyweight to your strokes and get conected to the ball. If you hit falling behind youll get really disconected with the ball, besides the fact your ball wont hurt any decent player

Agreed, a geat video and reminder to us. However, recreational players muscle may not afford to keep this standby position for 2 hrs during their match unless we spend adequate time on weigh train as well as tennis skill.

Not that I'm perfect by any means but you're absolutely right about the way most recreational player's ready position is so bad. I've mentioned this to several of the people I play with but they just ignore the advice of a split step which is to my advantage. I do get my stance pretty far apart with my racquet up so I'm halfway there. At times, I lean forward but not all the time. I took around 15 years off from playing tennis so now in retirement, getting back into it but having to relearn a lot that I'd forgotten. Legs are so important in the game of tennis but unfortunately flying and restaurants are not the best way to stay in shape so now I have to really work to get my legs back in shape.

Video is such a truth teller! And the ready position - so easy to be lazy about it because up to a certain level you can get away with it. But it definitely is a barrier to improvement.
@EssentialTennis

Yup, it's precisely how easy it is to keep doing what's comfortable that holds so many players back. Thanks for watching!

Does this also apply when you play on clay? Where I live we only have clay courts and I kind of think that y loose some grip if I reduce the feet contact zone by using only the tip of my shoes

I definitely have been guilty of the cereal shopping posture a lot. The last couple years I've reached a point where I increasing realize that my problems are all below the waist. The swings are fine. The footwork needs the attention.

Kettle bell swings are great for building this ready stance. It forces the person to balance all four of your checkpoints in unison. So is standing at the net when a ball machine or advance player is firing away at you. The net player needs to dig in or get knocked over.

This goes to show that the fundamentals are what we should be focussing on. The difference between the two levels is the stroke, the footwork is near identical

Funny thing the skinny stance actually is the most leverage. If you exert a large lateral force in that pasture, you will tend to spin your body. Wide stance reduces that effect letting you exert larger lateral forces without losing balance.
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 3 месяца назад
That makes sense. Thank you for watching!

@@EssentialTennis ps. the landing from the split step add to this effect too by increasing the vertical forces. (in addition to preloading all the tendons and storing energy to release in the movement). when pushing primarily off of one foot,basically, if you imagine the foot's force as an arrow coming out of the foot, you are trying to keep that arrow aimed near the whole body center of mass to keep you from spinning. sorry for nerding out on you. I enjoy the content. thanks!

This is hilarious, but in fairness to the first few examples (guy in the cereal aisle, etc), I don't think you'd see intense split steps from the pros during short court warmup.

Great content as always. Some of us beginners are fascinated by videos of effortless power like this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9NKtOSzeIIM.html. When you are Roger Federer, you earn the right to warm up however you like. We shouldn't delude ourselves into thinking this is the prototype footwork for a full effort ground stroke
