I love how some of these patterns have the neckline depth included! I have a short upper torso and many tops are just too scooped out for me. This makes it easier to make alterations to the patterns if necessary.
Very informative video thank you. By the way the traveler's cardigan is beautiful in the Noro yarn If you want to add buttons - you can add snaps and put buttons on outside for show! See Darling Cardigan by Veronika Lindberg. She used snaps but unsure what kind of snaps. And knitted the sweater three different ways with snaps no buttons, with snaps with buttons and last with real button holes and buttons
Regarding the Battenberg blanket: I think the silver/gold square matches well with the other colours and it gives you a nice light to dark variation within the squares. One thing that might be important to consider: using a cream colour for the sqaures inbetween might not look well with the gold/silver square since it wouldn't really have as much contrast. If the yarn is more shiny in real life than on camera it might work but if not maybe consider using another base colour. Maybe a light green tone or a very warm beige :)
I love to see your knits, Emily: your work is so precise, clean and fine. Just beautiful. I'll be casting on the Sunshine Tee soon, so your remarks were helpful, thank you. (As for acquisitions ... or trying to keep them to a minimum... don't worry about that. You seem like a super sensible person, and I bet you won't be purchasing anything that doesn't work into your pantry or that you really cannot use to good result!)
Loved most of these tops! Thank you for sharing! Unfortunately this year summer has been quite cold this year. I think yesterday was a first day that I didn’t wear a cardie with my outfit. So summer knits are not really calling me at the moment but my cardie queue is growing 😂
Wow, this was a big round up! I am absolutely blown away by the Vico Tank and HAVE to make it. Like, NOW. Excuse me while I raid my yarn pantry. Another top that I'm planning to make, and which was not in your video but is pretty popular right now is the Chrysler Top by Pernille Larson (Knitting for Olive). If anyone wants to knit this - check out what the Knitting for Olive book that contains the pattern costs as the Kindle version before buying the pattern separately, I paid less for the whole book than I would have paid for the pattern.
Knitting is a part of fashion, and a part of fashion is following trends. 🤷🏼♀️ But I honestly don’t understand why any knitter would care what some other knitters are doing or making? Nobody is making you follow social media trends. Knitting is what you make it! Some people really, really need to get out of their heads (and off the computer?) and stop worrying about what other people are doing.
I think I might try the Forest Garden pattern. I recently went through and sorted my stash, and found a bag of seven balls of DK in a pretty blue that I clearly had some purpose in mind for, once upon a time. Rather than try to figure out what on earth that intention might have been, using that yarn for this pattern seems like a good bet. It's written for a cotton/silk blend, so my cotton/linen yarn is probably a reasonable substitution. The pattern looks gorgeous, if challenging -- though, note to anyone else interested in this one, a lot of the Ravelry comments seem to suggest sizing down as it runs big.
thank you for including so many bra friendly options! going bra free isn't really an option for me as I'm larger in the bust and i find strapless bras are not very comfortable and give a bit of a uniboob shape anyway.
Nice round up! About the knitting for olive pure silk: I think the main factor (apart from the tactile experience you mentioned) is that it is a cruelty free fiber - the threads being harvested after the moth has left its chrysalis instead of the chrysalis being boiled with the animal inside (thereby killing it) to harvest the silky threads. Martina from We grow Wild has an entire series on cruelty free silks.😊
Love to see a size-inclusive roundup 👏 There are some gems in this list for sure! I just wanted to mention that size-inclusive means a 60" minimum bust after ease is considered. So if a pattern has a finished bust of 60" but recommends 2" of positive ease it doesn't quite make the cut. But overall a great list, thanks for putting it together!
Thank for your videos- curious as to whether you had any problems with the increase and decrease rows after you joined the front and back. If I follow the pattern especially for round 2 - if doesn’t stay in pattern with broken rib ? I’m just going on and trying to stay in pattern I m making small also for my grand daughter. I’ve emailed designer and have not heard back
For the bag you can use half double crochet stitch to make it denser and sturdier . Also you can crochet the bag as long one piece rectangle with horizontal stripes ( this way you will be able to work one color in each row so it wont get messy) and then in the end saw up the sides and tou will end up having a bag with vertical lines. Also you can saw little rextangle in the bottom edges to give the bag better shaped bottom (hope that made sense ). As some alredy advised you i also thing tunisian crochet will also work for the bag)
Nice round up. Check out the recently released Cleo Top by Rust Knitwear. It is size inclusive, has three neck line options and also optional bust shaping. Simone has some really nice patterns. I can highly recommend the Ellie summer top as well although that one is not fully size inclusive.
Thanks for sharing! One tip that can be handy for these kinds of bottom up camisoles is stopping your knitting a couple decreases early and making 5-stitch or 7-stitch cord straps…I know they’re still icord and not necessarily more bra friendly; however, they may feel more robust and be less prone to stretch over time!
You should make the Olga Sweater paired with a beautiful neutral with the Peer Gynt! I just received my yarn for this pattern and it requires 7 balls of one colour and 7 of the other for the M/L! it would be so beautiful on you in this color!!!
Maybe a striped sweater could work for the terracotta yarn? 'I like the stripe me right polo' by Julia Lonn or the 'Elizabeth blouse' by petite knit. Or something along the stripe hype sweater kind of vibe!
I cant wait to hear about your experience with the rafia paper yarn! Ive never used rafia before, either, but i want to crochet a hat or bag with it. Love your color choices.
If you get the knit companion app, you can walk away from a project and when you open the project again, it will hold your p,ace exactly where you left it.
I am also not a fan of slipovers from a styling but I think if you knit at least some of the collar, it’ll cinch it in a bit and then with blocking may be drapey enough to resolve your issues. Also oversized slipovers are meant to go over sweaters so if there is anything you are wanting to style it with, I think it’s worth trying out over that piece before picking a new slipover pattern, just to see how much ease you actually want! Love the triceratops flowers!! They look so good!
I'm with you. I'm not sure I like slip overs either. Does colourwork extend how far to take your yarn as you are holding them together? I always thought it just made a thicker fabric and have always rolled with stripes instead, but if Im wrong that could open up more possibilities?
This is an important consideration!! The colorwork patterns I am considering are ones where the main color isn’t carried through the yoke I.e. the colorwork is a band that uses several other yarns and then the sleeves and body resume with the main color. One example is the easy v by Caitlin Hunter 😁
My two cents: I think the lilac/lavender colors look amazing on you. You glow in them. (I think they suit you better than the blues, but you can choose the colors you like - obviously!!!, the ones that make you happy 🙂). As for trends, I don't care a fig about them. I choose things (patterns, colors, yarns) based on what appeals to me, what I would like to make and wear (or gift) and what seems to be missing in my wardrobe. I think all colors have their place, but I don't wear them all simply because I prefer some over others. As for the patterns and fashion, I only choose the ones that I KNOW I will wear, that I KNOW I will get some use out of. I save the ones that don't fall into that category BUT seem like fun knits or knits that will teach me techniques for gift knits... as long as I am fairly certain the receiver will like the product. My mother taught me to always go for classics, to not fall victim to trends/fashion. She was so right. I can still wear items that I got from her own wardrobe that are over 50 years old because quality lasts. And never really looks dated. I want my knits to be the same.
It's such a smart thing to do. I don't care for trends anymore too. I like seeing what people are wearing, but I prefer to wear what I like and what's comfortable for me and what fits. For example, I sew my own skirts, so they fit perfectly, because there's no way I could find one in shop. I really think good cuts and quality are better than following trends, you'll have it for a long time so it's way more sustainable.
So much of it really does come down to habits and the things we learn to value! I love how your approach leaves space to enjoy new techniques and colours while still keeping true to your own style and preferences!
I love the crochet bag! With all the "grocery store" bags we use nowadays, it's nice to have special, stylish ones 😊. I've been curious to try Hobbii for a while now. This past week I finally placed an order. I got some 100% wool that is slow colour-changing to use in the yoke of the Art Nouveau sweater. It's very soft, and came unbelievably quick, but I was a bit dismayed that although it's designed in Denmark, it's made in China. I'm not very knowledgeable about such things, but I do wonder about working conditions there, etc....so, sad to say, I'm not sure I'll be ordering from Hobbii again 😔
Hi Sandra! I totally agree with you on the tote bag front; even if I don’t use it everyday, a fun and colourful accessory is still a worthwhile make. Thank you for also sharing your thought on Hobbii’s commercial yarns; it can definitely be a delicate balance for a lot of knitters to find good quality yarns in a (subjectively) affordable price range while still making consumption choices aligned with their ethics! As a content creator, I try to share a range of commercial and independently produced yarns (although it’s been a knitting for olive heavy year) and, when relevant, alternatives, so that I can capture the range of ethical and financial positions of my audience. However, I will definitely be taking a closer look at my yarn labels when I get home!
To get the look you want with the slipover but without the bulk, may I suggest the Coffee Run Collar by Samantha Guerin. It is a dickey with a full length front and shortened back. I made the piece a bit wider then lengthened the back to match the front. I then knitted icords to tie the front and back together on the sides. It turned out great!!!
Love your proposed modifications to this pattern! I think I remember seeing Kaci from Youngfolk knits make this, and it looked wonderful! Thanks for the idea 😊
I always love sitting here listening to people talk about all the tank tops and tee shirts they're going to make this summer while working on a sweater lol I've enjoyed tank tops and tee shirts in the past but I never really "knit to season" so all my summer knitting plans this year are sweaters and woolly socks
Hello Emily... check out Tunisian crochet for your bag... which I love😍.. Here's a link to a really good vloger on the subject. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--RLfPdJNHrE.htmlsi=7scND2zR9knzZ0j_ It will require a 'special' hook. It is an extremely enjoyable method and has several stitch options... I have recently found. I've only really done the basic stitch and would work for what you want to do. But I get the impression you are an adventurous soul...so feel free to explore 😉. I'm very envious of your impending trip to Italy. Enjoy all the stuff.
I live in Waterloo so I totally get when you talk about the climate and what fibres works for us. Lol First vid of yours I’ve caught and glad the algorithm sent it to me. I’ve knitted for a long time but still feel like a newby, lol. You might like a pattern I’m working on called Ivory Shell tank top by Cheryl Beckerich.
hey :) i love your videos! about the CROCHET STITCHES: from the "normal" and easy stitches i would recommend the single crochet stitch the most because it is not very stretchy. You can also line the bag as it takes away all the strech. but there is another stitch that is less stretchy than every other crochet stitch i know. it is called the *THERMAL STITCH*. it is used for bags and especially the handles of crochet bags. i lerned it from tiktok but here is a YT tutorial: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_NeKe_vhToE.html i do have to say that the thermal stitch is a rather slow working stitch because you work half rows and not a full row. it this is fine for you it will be worth it!
I just finished a summer tank in an 80/20 merino silk blend. I’ve only worn it twice, but I’ve been as comfortable as you can be with temperatures over 90 and high humidity.
