Taking a deeper look at the greatest (and the worst) video games of all time and giving my interpretation. I promise I'm not as obnoxious as I probably sound.
I've been waiting for this game for my entire life. I was so freaking excited for the announcement, a personal dream coming true! I feel so incredibly guilty that i couldn't manage to enjoy it. I was so hyped for the first hours only to find myself playing from obligation by the end (excluding Sebastian's quest, which were always a joy) I think i was overwhelmed with content. Maybe I was craving a more hogwarts central story. I wish i could feel closer to the students rather than feeling like a secret agent pretending to be a fellow student. Am I alone in this?
I love how you treating snapping at someone because you're in a bad mood to murdering dozens of people and potentially dooming all of humanity. Those actions are absolutely on the same level morally.
The idea wasn’t to say that they’re on the same level in magnitude, only that your understanding of a person comes from what they present to you. If your one and only interaction with a person is after they’ve had a bad day, you’d probably think “wow, what a dick”, when in reality you just caught them at a bad time. Part II dives into this more deeply.
Honestly I still prefer the original 1996 version over the remake. My problems with the remake have to do with inclusions that I felt weren't necessary. I didn't like the crimson heads because I prefer the Romero style zombies, any inclusion to that lore I think is a disrespect to the rule of zombies. I didn't care for lisa Trevor because all she did was get in the way of the missions. She wasn't really terrifying as she was annoying to me. The cheesy voice acting never bothered me because I watch a lot of B-movies and Resident evil ones voice acting is academy award winning compared to those b movies I've seen. I still enjoyed playing the remake but I didn't think the game was this groundbreaking masterpiece that people claim it to be. For me, RE1 original is still my all-time favorite Resident evil game.
Nice to see appreciation for Resident Evil's roots and it's subtle mechanics. I remember going from the SNES with Mario World to the next gen Playstation with Resident Evil. The fact that it had voice acting, live action cut scenes and CD quality music was mind-blowing! Resi 1, Remake 1 and 4 were showcases for their respective generation of consoles.
Thats a thing i always like to comment, i am from the generation PS1, (yes im old haha) and i played RE1 in the prime of its glory. Theres was nothing alike in gaming in those days, even in graphic, sounds, music and context. So its was a Blast. Today people mock the graphics, but in those days its was stellar, besides, those times we dont have internet or media, we used to read books, and sometimes a zombie movie on TV, so imagination was rampant, we complete the poor cubic graphics with imagination; Even now i have Mandella Effects in RE1OG because i imagine things that were never there, like paintings and cracks in the wall, spider webs and dirty in the corners. Sound design was a thing too, because at that point you dont have realistic instrumental music, and realistic sound effects like steps, moanings, usually was 8 bit or synth sound. That collaborate a lot for the atmosphere. And last, its was hard, for a newplayers that dont know nothing about it, you have to discover, today you know the puzzles, you know that you have to save your game, bla bla bla, in that time, you have to discover... Good times thou haha
re1 and code veronica really need remakes i wanna enjoy them so bad but i just cant play with the tank controls and fixed camera. ive been a re fan since 2008 when i first played re4 on the game cube, and ive played every re game thats released since re4 but never went back and played the older games bc of the tank controls. i just recently tried playing re1 but after about 3 hours of struggling with the controls and terrible camera angles i gave up.
Did you try the 2002 re1 remake? It's movement is more smooth than original tank controls. The fixed camera is the only thing it kept. Biggest thing to remember is that it's not meant to be an action game at all. Re4 is a gem but it's action first. If you really dive into the story of re1 remake and learn how to progress each section, it can pull you in rather quickly. For first time players I suggest playing as Jill since she can hold more items.
I actually stopped buying Resident Evil when 4 came out, because it removed literally everything I like about the series. I came back to the series when 7 released... They ruined it again with Village though, hey-ho.
This is a genuinely really well crafted, entertaining, informative video. When I play open world games, I ALWAYS play video essays to listen to and glance over my phone because I have AHDH lol, and this is a great one. (It’s Assassin’s Creed, hence why I need the stimulation while exploring)

I agree with all of those but the only thing I’d mention is three months def wouldn’t be enough for a 14 year old girl to get over what happened when Ellie was alone :( she even is seen looking at a deer like what they hunted and meeting that mf
I'm glad you added the "There's enough here.." part from Tess.. bc that always was the giveaway to me that although they were both keeping each other distant to avoid getting hurt.. they were Friends With Benefits at the very least...I also hate that they never ever ever ever mention Tess ever again except the one time when Ellie is talking about how Riley was first.. then Tess.. etc etc.. And how she's still waiting for her turn.. I wish there was at least one conversational moment between Joel and Ellie were he tells her a story about something him and Tess did.. or anything like that..

What people don’t understand if life is full of ambiguous morality. Not everyone is right and not everyone is wrong. But some are more right or wrong than others. And Imo, Joel was more right than the fireflies
I so hope that we’ll get several seasons exploring the stuff that got left out of the show’s first one. Really hope we don’t go straight into Part II next season. Let that one be the depressing, controversial fifth or sixth season, per usual for HBO.
In retrospect, the game felt like the adaptation of a series or movie. The music, the writing, the production value, the way protagonists pushed moral boundaries… The game felt like playing an HBO show.
Correct me if I'm wrong but in the hospital didn't Joel learn there were a dozen people like Ellie and they all die from the surgery and fail at creating a vaccine?
Thanks a lot! I felt the same way and only used footage from the remake because it won a poll I did on Reddit asking which one people would rather watch. Having spent a few hours with it though, it grow on me in the end.
I never believed in the 'Ellie is Jesus our savior' theory. You dont make a vaccine by cutting into someones skull. Vaccines take years to make. if anything they would need her blood. Also that hospital had like one doc and very little working equipment. Add that to the absurdity that the fireflies just want to throw her on a table to study the fungus. Just terrible writing. Fortunatly for the writers most people have very VERY limited knowledge on medical things. Joel did the right thing here. it was more if a military base than a hopital and he treated it like one.
