The Ambiguous Morality of THE LAST OF US

Quickly approaching 10 years old, Naughty Dog's The Last of Us is one of my all time favourite video games. One of the main reasons is the way in which it goes about exploring the characters' identities, values, and morality. This is my take.

I'm glad you added the "There's enough here.." part from Tess.. bc that always was the giveaway to me that although they were both keeping each other distant to avoid getting hurt.. they were Friends With Benefits at the very least...I also hate that they never ever ever ever mention Tess ever again except the one time when Ellie is talking about how Riley was first.. then Tess.. etc etc.. And how she's still waiting for her turn.. I wish there was at least one conversational moment between Joel and Ellie were he tells her a story about something him and Tess did.. or anything like that..

i actually think it was good story writing on their part! joel’s character doesn’t open up - he doesn’t even really talk about his daughter til the end. i think it was supposed to just be part of his character. he doesn’t speak about what he’s been through because he prefers to keep it at a distance. it would have been super nice to hear more about her, but it would really be straying too far from joel’s character in my opinion!

In retrospect, the game felt like the adaptation of a series or movie. The music, the writing, the production value, the way protagonists pushed moral boundaries… The game felt like playing an HBO show.

Ellie had killed someone before that, my guess is Riley. When they both waited to turn with each other, and obv Ellie didn’t ever turn.

I find it off when you get to the fireflies. Them knocking out Joel, rushing to work on Ellie. If they had talked to them explained what was happening. I don’t excuse Joel. It is just baffling. Your killing most likely your possible cure in a hope it will work.

It's explained in Part II (sort of) by a scene where Marlene speaks with Abby's father before they operate on Ellie. Abby's dad knows that if Abby was immune, he wouldn't want to kill her even if it meant saving humanity. So instead of looking Ellie in the eye and risking his own hesitancy, he goes ahead with the surgery while she's still unconscious.

The entirety of TLOU1 tries to hammer the message of not trusting people at face value, to be aware of your surroundings, and draw conclusions from what you can actually see. It was actually very well written because the writers were aware of tropes endemic to the genre and setting, and exploited that to have you believe false lines of reasoning to effectively pull the rug from under you. So reexamine the Fireflies with that context: Are they altruistic and competent? Do you think this because they *say* that, or have they *actually* done anything altruistic for anyone else? Where are *their* infection scanners? By the end of the game you're supposed to reflect and realize you were never supposed to trust this group that, surprise, literally nobody else trusts, but undoing decades of stories telling you about how groups like the Fireflies are plucky do-gooder rebels is hard to unpack.

Honestly I see why they did what they did. It was very shitty and shady but man you have the cure for mankind right in front of your you can save millions probably and start to try and repair society But there’s the slightest chance the girl or the smuggler who brought her might call the whole thing off… I don’t agree with it but I understand the urgency and the importance of Ellie’s immunity. Obviously if they had just asked Ellie or even Joel even tho it’s not really his choice a lot of it could have been avoided

Well it's understandable why everyone did what they did. The motivation of each character makes sense. Sometimes good people have to do bad things and vice versa.
@ebudworth
@ebudworth Год назад
@@angla3383 I mean, you could just lie. "I'm sorry Joel, but we were not able to resuscitate her. We're currently examining her body to see if we can derive a vaccine, but we need to do this quickly. As soon as they are done, you'll be able to see her." If you suspect that he might try to stop the surgery (Marlene seems to suspect that they have developed a connection), and you know that Joel is a dangerous individual (if his past doesn't tell her that, the fact that they survived when she lost a good number of her people should), and you don't want to give them a choice in the matter, I would suggest giving Joel an easier pill to swallow. Not an easy pill, but easier than "we're going to kill her to save others."

You gained a sub. A great video, and an excellent explanation of the fractured, hurtful, beautiful relationship between two of the best characters in gaming history.

I so hope that we’ll get several seasons exploring the stuff that got left out of the show’s first one. Really hope we don’t go straight into Part II next season. Let that one be the depressing, controversial fifth or sixth season, per usual for HBO.

I love how you treating snapping at someone because you're in a bad mood to murdering dozens of people and potentially dooming all of humanity. Those actions are absolutely on the same level morally.
@connorpurnell
@connorpurnell 7 месяцев назад
The idea wasn’t to say that they’re on the same level in magnitude, only that your understanding of a person comes from what they present to you. If your one and only interaction with a person is after they’ve had a bad day, you’d probably think “wow, what a dick”, when in reality you just caught them at a bad time. Part II dives into this more deeply.

What people don’t understand if life is full of ambiguous morality. Not everyone is right and not everyone is wrong. But some are more right or wrong than others. And Imo, Joel was more right than the fireflies
