Me, my wife, and 3 children live in east central Ohio on a small homestead. In February 2019 my son was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome at 3 months old.
This rocked our world and has changed everything. He is such a little inspiration!!! Because of him I gained the courage to start up a RU-vid channel.
Having a son with a disability made me want to show everybody that it won't define him or us, so I named our channel "The Able Farmer".
I will try to have new videos out at least ONCE a week!
.You will see us working with CHICKENS, BROILER CHICKENS, RABBITS, TURKEYS, PEACOCKS, DUCKS, GEESE, GARDENING, MAPLE SUGARING, and MORE!!!!!!. I have many future plans as well that I look forward to bringing to you!
SOOO.... skip to 6:02 to see Able's idea of 'the best'...too much weight and cost... change wood to pvc pipe, change cattle panel to welded horse fencing, change roof bracing to pvc pipe curved over to hold up horse fencing. use thin pvc corrugated panels for roof and down sides to preven wet chickens, add large bucket to hold chicken water and connect it to auto chicken waterer, add 1/2" pvc pipe over feeder to prevent filth/scratching. Have fun!
Thats awesome brother!!! I was just given a 3 week old cornish hen that is a pet. I knew the challenge I am facing but like you I want to give it the best life possible. People bought it for a pet not realizing what they had gotten.
Mine as babies we're always so hungry and I felt so bad for them they would eat until they're cropped was really swollen and I knew something was wrong I didn't know what I had at the time
Great video. One of the best. Few tips (may have been mentioned already). 1 - It's beast not to sever the head completely since cutting the wind pipe can cause the heart to stop pumping and you lose the blood draining advantage. I used to do cervical dislocation thinking it was more humane, but it really isn't and you end up with blood in the tissue near the bones. 2 - put a few drops of soap into the scalding water to break the surface tension. This allows the water to penetrate the feathers and get closer to the skin. You will need to adjust your dunk time or temp (140-145) according to your preferences.
What made you decide to go with Dexters? I'm on the fence regarding cows... we have one, an Angus/Milking Shorthorn cross... and honestly, I'm a bit intimidated by her. Wondering if there is a "calmer" and easier to handle breed. Dexters are smaller, right? What are the benefits of them over other breeds?
yes they are the smallest natural breed. the cows are under 500lbs. very docile and resilient against the elements. smaller cattle need less inputs, meaning I can have more animals on small acreage. they do excellent on grass only because the breed has not been commercialized and bred to grow fast and big. The meat is suppose to be excellent. (haven't eaten it yet). also my family eat about 1/2 a beef a year. a whole dexter should be close to 1/2 of a commercial beef.
Good to hear from you .The herd look good and you are becoming a cattle rancher ! Seems much easier over all than raising them goats. We are sticking to chickens for eggs and meat and we just enjoy having a small flock as pets kind of.Merry Christmas from Texas, and yes please let us know how the birthing goes .
In the future, when I purchase a house/trailer/bungalow I’m gonna return back to these videos and learn as much as I can because it was super informative!
Hi I bought some Ancona's from a gentleman a couple years ago. He lived in a small town called,Pekin. His water source was like that of yours . The farm looks similar with the wood railing. I was just curious to see if it was that same place. The guy I bought my Anconas was in his 50's and was a veteran. Loved the set up and you are right about small duck ponds becoming filthy in short order. I wish I had a source of water like yours. Thanks for sharing,my friend!
Thats really sad to hear abt that, thank you for sharing with us this incident, hatchery must be responsible and must respond accordingly. Dont you worry everything will be fine. You are very dedicated and good person and you will manage it easily. Live happily and love to see you working with family. 😊😊😊
