I’m a full-time instructional designer by day, along with being a Doctoral student. Somehow in my spare time I find the time to get away from my desk and do stuff around the house. I thought this channel might be a fun way to share my DIY adventures with the world!
This channel will feature videos related to some of my favorite things to do, like yard work, house painting, cooking, building things, and spending time with my dogs.
Feedback and suggestions are always welcome! Thanks for visiting and subscribing!
My impulse sprinkler does 1/2" per hour, my oscillating sprinkler only 1/8" per hour. But, that also is with the impulse sprinkler set at a half circle. Good tips. Thanks.
I’m also from Utah and would like to get into reel mowing. I hesitate because I can’t find any local shops to do reel mower sharpening. Any suggestions?
This is a common question and one that I’ve struggled with a bit. I just got in contact with a guy from a golf course who says he’d be happy to service my reels, but he can’t do it until November when the season is over. I’ll be contacting him again then and back lapping in the meantime. If it goes well I’ll get in an annual plan with him. I expect I may have to take the reel out of the cartridge for him to grind it.
Sure. I would be checking the nozzles to make sure there aren’t any clogs. Also the spacing might be off and you might not have head to head coverage. There will be some variation you just want to make sure there aren’t any spots that are not getting hardly any water.
My mom has made this my whole life and I’ve never attempted it myself yet. She melts the chocolate separately then pours it on. Sometimes she has poor adhesion of the nuts. I think I’ll try it this way, it would seem the weight and heat of the candy would really help the chocolate and nuts adhere well. Has this method has ever left you with areas of toffee without chocolate? Or do you get a pretty even coat of it? This was a great video, thanks so much!
Thanks for the comment! I’ve never had the toffee not stick to the chocolate. I like it this way. The nuts do drop off a bit, but I like them exposed instead of mixed in the toffee or in the chocolate.
This is a great video that is easy to follow and not intimidating. That said, the only change I would make would be to add more almonds and chocolate on top of the poured caramel....just my two cents.
Thanks! And there are lots of ways to customize this. You could even stir the nuts into the toffee, roast them ahead of time, or even dip them in chocolate and roll that in nuts. Once the basics are down, feel free!
No, it was a good amount. There is a fiber that’s included in the spray that adds something to retain moisture and help the seed germinate in, so it looks like a lot but it’s not all seed.
@@DennisAroundtheHouse I’ve been working for a hydro seeding company on the weekends and we never seem to puddle it like that so I was just curious. Alls that matter is that it grows right.
Yeah, Joe is great. I’ve had him do work for me twice and he’s always great to educate to make sure I know how to take care of everything. I’m glad he let me film his advice and share.
I would think so. I assume you’re talking about a hose end Sprinkler. I’m guessing you’ll end up saving water if you have a good idea of how much water your hose is putting out.
I think it would still be valid, but just more challenging for you to ensure that you are getting equal coverage. Would still be a good way for you to calculate how long you need to water.
Most informational video I’ve seen ever in regards to hydroseeding. I live in central California here in the valley. I’ve had my home for over 23 years and have the worst. The worst landscaping skills. Thanks for sharing this video.
None at all! I really enjoyed this mower. I don’t have it anymore because I won the Allett striping competition and as a prize for their Stirling mower, which is an upgraded battery powered version of the Kensington. If I had it to do again with my own money, I’d definitely buy the Kensington again. The Stirling is nice but for the price, Kensington would be all I’d need
@@DennisAroundtheHouse Thank you, I’m trying to decide which reel mower to go with. I’m a fan of the cartridge system but I was not sure if the quality was being compromised in the process. Appreciate the videos.
So I notice the Sterling and the Liberty both use the same handle arms, speed control, almost all the same upper parts as well as the same 10 amp battery as on my Ego electric mower. Can you get these two mowers in the US? Are they a subsidiary brand to Ego? I already have the mower, blower, and trimmer, fast charger, snd 3 batteries so all I would need is the mower itself. Thoughts? Thanks
The Stirling uses Ego, the Liberty uses Greenworks. They are independent of both companies, just use their battery systems. I like the Ego better from what I’ve used of both. The Ego would only work with Ego tools, same for the Greenworks tools. I think that most Ego tools have a unified battery, but I’ve not heard the same of Greenworks. I have an 80v Greenworks Edger, but I know they also have some 40v battery tools. Ego is mostly all 56v, I believe.
I haven’t totally conquered this problem. The hi area definitely help, but also making sure that the grass is getting thorough watering is essential I’ve found. That helps to clear the salts from the urine away from the spots. The challenge is keeping up with it over the winter when it’s too cold to water. By the time the grass starts growing again I have dead spots to deal with.
Thank youuuu!! I was looking for someone who shows how to do this!! My case is actually the other way around (remove UC pully from scarifier, Liberty rabge's pully from verticut, then install UC pully onto verticut). Very helpful. Thank you!
Right. It’s been a while since I made the video. What did I say? I think it was just that I wanted to ride a Vespa around England. I have a Vespa, so that’s why I named the brand. I know they are from Italy.
That house across the street with the forest growing in the front yard is horrible. Here where I live if you go and maintain that yard you can put a lean on the property and charge them a fair amount per weekly cut plus interest and when it goes to auction you can either take possession of the property or get a pay out
Ah, you’re referring to the empty lot with the weed forest? That’s an interesting tactic. There is a for sale sign on it now but they want way more for it than it’s worth IMO. A maintenance lean is an interesting idea. I’ll actually look into that!
Awesome! - I have an Ego lawnmower and trimmer would love to add this to my collection as I have been getting into Reel mowers and looking for a battery powered one. Or the PGA manual one the Hudson Star.
The Hudson Star looks really awesome. The price puts it a bit out of my range, but also I don’t think it has a height of cut that would work for me. I think it’s meant to cut very low. I’m keeping mine at about 1” now. The HS only goes up to .75. I’ve gone that low before but I like to have more range.
@@DennisAroundtheHouse Hey Dennis - A couple of questions as I am looking for a Reel mower. 1. Thoughts on the Jacobson Eclipse that is a battery powered electric unit? I have seen a few out there for sale. 2. Dont Cringe.... Any experience on the old Locke Mowers? They look very interesting perhaps if you find a descent one. Going to look at one today and purposly not bringing money as I first need to understand what the heck I am looking at.
Actually, I don't know much about either of those, but looking into them, they seem pretty heavy duty, like for large properties and golf courses. Quite a bit more than what I'd need. Are you looking for residential but with a large property?
I haven’t had them officially grinded yet, but backlapping keeps them honed well. I have a local golf course that I am planning to contact to see if they might be able to help with a grind. Honestly, that’s one of the challenges owners have been having… trying to find a local place to take them to so you done have to pay a ton in shipping. When I finally work out getting them grinded I’ll see about posting something about it.
Hi there Sidney, I apologize for the long time getting back to you. I’ve had two problems, the first one is a manufacturer design flaw that they’ve fixed with a bracing kit that they are pre installing on newer units. All of us that got them initially had them sent to us to retrofit. The other problem I had was my error, where I tried to pick up cut, long decorative grass and it jammed up my scarifier cartridges and broke some of the spindles. Allett is being great about sending me out some replacement parts to fix it with that should be arriving in about a week or so.
