Leveling my lawn with sand

Yep, here is yet another topdressing video with sand! I decided to do this so that I could get a smoother short cut in my lawn with my Allett Cylinder (Reel) mower.
In this video, in addition to mowing with my Allett Kensington 20H, I use a levelawn rake (amzn.to/2XLzv5m) which was an indispensable tool in this process. To move my sand around, I used my Gorilla Cart (amzn.to/3gD44CO), that has tires that I upgraded to solid so that I wouldn't get flats when I run over puncture vine thorns.

Thanks! I’ll probably be doing another round of top dressing next year, probably with a half and half mix of topsoil and sand. Still finding some problematic uneven spots.

Thanks! The grass I have isn’t anything too special, just some Kentucky Blue Grass. I currently have it trained to be cut at 5/8 inch. It’s doing well! On a side note, it’s interesting that weeds get trained to that height as well. I’ve found a couple of dandelions that are only one inch tall. They’d be cute if they weren’t weeds.

Thanks so much for this video. My upcoming project this fall. How has the cyclone sand worked out? I know masonry sand is ~7 times the cost from Geneva Rock. I've been wondering how well cyclone sand would work in its place.

Cyclone worked very well. I can’t imagine masonry being different enough to justify the higher price. It would be an interesting experiment to test them, but if I was to do it again, I’d be going with the cyclone. Plus, the way it’s made makes it automatically free of rocks and stuff so it was very consistent. Goes down best when it’s dry, though. You may need to spread it and then let it dry a bit before you work it in, or plan on going over it a little the next day. If you’re doing it in the fall you’ll need to make sure you’ve got a few days of dry weather. Let me know how it goes!

Hi Dennis, Thank you for the video. I'm up here in Alberta and would like to level my front yard with sand as well. The play sand is readily available here but I think I should wait untill next Spring as we are already 3 weeks into August, as well, we have had record heat waves here and it could stress the grass to much. I have the leveling rake as well to complete this project next year. How often did you apply water after leveling and did it drain into the ground without issue. One last note I use my Liberty 43 for lawn cutting.

I fertilized before I top dressed so that growth would be stimulated. I watered as I normally do, but you do want to make sure that you’re getting the right amount on your lawn, generally (I have another video that shows that). Thai wouldn’t be a bad time of year to top dress because between now and winter is the best time for new seed, etc. it would also be a good time to get your grass to grow up through the sand. I wasn’t too heavy handed with the sand and it had mostly worked through in about a week.

@@DennisAroundtheHouse it seems to take the cuts “reel” well. 👍🏼. I’m about ready to make the jump to reeling. I’ve got a mix of TTTF / KBG. I’m at about 2.5” with my Honda now and it likes it. Worried though about getting down into the sun 2” heights. Thanks for the great vids! Look out Mr. Knorr. 😂
