How to draw and mow a pattern on your lawn

Last year (Fall 2021) I won the Allett Mowers Creative Lawn Striping Competition. In this video, I show the method I use to draw out a pattern on my lawn that I then mow for 2-3 weeks until the grass has adjusted to the different cutting heights.

That part of the design is pretty fun to mow. I may try to do more spirals like that in other areas in the future.

I am planning to enter next year. Where are you located? Are you using a PGR? I have Mazama KBG with some legacy grass from the original yard that was a fescue but the Mazama is taking over

I haven’t used PGR, just now about twice a week. This year I’m going to let it go a little longer at about 1.25” or so. I’m in Utah and have KBG

I’m also from Utah and would like to get into reel mowing. I hesitate because I can’t find any local shops to do reel mower sharpening. Any suggestions?

This is a common question and one that I’ve struggled with a bit. I just got in contact with a guy from a golf course who says he’d be happy to service my reels, but he can’t do it until November when the season is over. I’ll be contacting him again then and back lapping in the meantime. If it goes well I’ll get in an annual plan with him. I expect I may have to take the reel out of the cartridge for him to grind it.

I won the Creative Stripes Competition from Allett last year and the prize was their new mower, the Stirling. I still have my Kensington, but I am getting ready to sell it since I don't really need two.
