Thanks. Yes, the valves are push in/push out type Halkey Roberts. Deflation is fast, and it fits in the bag easily (if anything, the bag needs tighter straps).
@@gmurphy that's helpful thanks. i was heading towards a Gumotex Ruby XL then came across your video. Yours seems to have some advantages not least cost. Can it be paddled like a kayak or rowed ? Is it strong material? Thanks
@@ephs145 Yes, it comes with oars for rowing. I have tried to row it: it is much much faster than rowing a SIB, but not as easy as a "proper" kayak. It is made out of 0.9mm PVC, so the same material as most SIBs. I just read about the Ruby. The Ruby seems to pack down slightly smaller for the same size, but the Boatworld kayak boat also has the high-pressure dropstich floor (9psi, so it's hard like a SUP), v-keel and is Cat C (so rated for use at sea with up to 2m waves), and of course has a much nicer price.
@@gmurphy thanks so much for that. Think I'll go for one of these with the ePropulsion motor. Is the extra short shaft a good size? could you get 2 adults plus a dog onboard the 365? Last question please. Do you find it very heavy to carry deflated and packed? Thank you.
@@ephs145 No problem. Yes, the XS size is perfect for these (it is what I use). The 365 I would say is "two adults with kit, just", it may be worth considering the 435 (unless the dog is tiny). I find it pretty easy to move around (it's only 30kg, just an awkward shape which throws you a little off-balance). I would imagine the majority of people would be fine to carry it for short distances. If you plan on carrying a long way a trolley may be helpful.
cheers that's a helpful video. My SIB is knackered and thinking about replacing it with a kaboat. want something easier to launch by myself. Is there enough space on transom for launch wheels or would they obstruct the steering? Reckon its less hassle to launch by yourself up a steep shingle beach than a small ish (3.1m) SIB?
Thanks. Yes it is much easier than a SIB in my experience. I use a small/cheap kayak trolley with straps, and load the weight on the carrying end so the wheels don't dig in. Being lighter and narrower makes it much more managable. I have also seen someone flip a kaboat over and carry it above their head (taking the motor seperately of course)! It's a bit tight for both transom wheels and an outboard because when the wheels are in the "up" position - they get in the way of the motor body (powerhead): but I have seen some people set up kaboats so that the transom wheels are held with chain half way up (so they are out the water, but not as high as the powerhead). The transom is 39cm at the narrowest point.
I havn't (yet). It would be awesome, but it is hard to find a submersible one with a remote switch (before even thinking about brackets and adjustments). I don't think it would scare them though, unless shined directly into the eye.
@@georgebailey4463 yes, quite likely: although a torch has a broader spread - a laser would be less "seen" by the fish if you avoid the eye-region. Yep, it would make it a lot easier, and perhaps too easy. Although certianly when you need hip shots you are often also making very fast decisions as you can only see your target for a second or two - so it arguably might still be harder than a good viz shot looking down the barrel.
@@HughMyron372 Yeah, a lot of inshore Sussex is shallow for the first 2-3 miles - Brighton is a little bit deeper than most of it, and of course if it's a spring-high tide it adds 6m water all over.
Hey just me again, another couple of questions please if you don't mind. Is the floor built into it, if so is it flat or v shape or has it got a separate inflatable floor that fits inside. And is thier any room on the Transom for narrow fold up launching/1 man pulling the boat wheels? Thanks.
The floor is removable - and flat. The v shape is made by a keel tube which sits under the floor. Transom wheels may be possible depending on the outboard - but it's very tight. I have seen some solutions where the wheels are stored 2/3 the way up on some chain so that they don't interfere with the rotating outboard body, but nothing "off the shelf". I use a small folding kayak trolley/cart for solo launching. You can get them very cheap. They just strap on, and do the job really well (retighten the straps after the first few meters).
@@gmurphy Ok thanks for reply. I use a Yamaha MX18 Trolling motor and LiFePO4 battery for for very close inshore fishing up here in Runswick Bay in North Yorkshire, Rivers, lake district and canals. About 1/4 to half mile out here in RB depending on the conditions because its just a little bay but if you look on Google Earth parking the car is tricky so I would preferably need l transom wheels or other to take things etc when solo. Yes I've seen the kayak dollys/carts but that means I'd have to leave it or lock it up when I go out. Transom wheels are so much easier and would interfere with my motors shaft. Could I ask what are the dimensions of the Transom both Height and Width? I appreciate your time for answering my questions because Boatworld are not interested in answering my questions which is a little sad really.
@@markweatherall7437the kayak cart I use is tiny - not the trailer looking ones: literally just adding wheels on. I just stick it in the boat (if you take the wheels off it takes nearly no room - but I'm often too lazy as there is tonnes of room when solo). This sort of thing: www.amazon.co.uk/ASMSW-Carrier-Adjustable-Carrying-Kayaks/dp/B0928RYSG3/ Hopefully I will be out again on it next weekend - I will measure the transom then. I know it's 39cm high in the middle, but I don't have the width measurements to hand. Annoying that boatworld aren't answering, they were replying to me when I bombarded them with questions mid last year.
@@markweatherall7437 Transom height: Central 39cm, beside tubes 37cm.Transom width: Between tubes (narrowest) 40cm (including the ring surrounding the tubes which is flat against transom), between the transom-tube flaps 39cm. So basically 39cm for both wheels and outboard.
Great video and thanks for sharing, I noticed lastnight Boatworld do a '435' longer 3 man version, interesting, il check it out and make my mind up because there's only 2 of us ever going out at any one time but thinking of the 3 man for more room but obviously more money to buy. Could I ask are these whats sonetimes called Kaboats? Technical half Kayak and half boat? And Could I also ask what operating pressure (PSI) inflation is the floor and what operating PSI are the Tubes please?
Thanks! Yes, the 435 version looks great also, I mainly went for the 365 due to the smaller packed size. Yeah, they are basically kaboats. The tubes are 3.75 psi, the floor is 9 psi, and the keel is 4.5 psi.
@@gmurphy yes I just read on the Boatworld website that the 365 is 5kg less than the 435 but I don't know the differences in packaging size differences. Do you mean the box or overall deflation size etc?
@@markweatherall7437the overall defalation size. Annoyingly boatworld uses the same box for the 435 and 365 - so it's hard to judge the actual deflated size difference. I did ask them before I purchased, and they said that it entirely depends on how you roll it up - but roughly 3-5cm smaller in all dimensions.
@@markweatherall7437they are Halkey Roberts style valves: I'm not sure what make but they are the push-style ones (rather than twist), and fit the new/shorter Halkey Roberts adapters.
Long term old school dinosaur spearman here, my top tip? Slow everything right down. I can see from your head camera you're all about like a meerkat. Try getting into the habit of doing a wee zen moment during your descent duck dive, think of a leaf falling down. When you get there, stop, assess, and either aspeto or slowly move away , any fast movement causes ripples on everythings radar down there, so behave like kelp and just go really slowly. There, there's my tip, good hunting young un..
Great vid, I had similar exercises with vis at the begin of the year What is that boat I need something similar for my trips 😅 if it’s not too expensive Happy new year!
Thanks. Happy new year! The boat is a kayak boat 365 from boatworld - very economical really. It's high quality, and packs up small - just have to use within sensible limits. The outboard is an epropulsion spirit plus, which is a bit pricey (although no maintainance, no fuel costs, and no storage or transport issues) - however a similar sized petrol outboard is pretty cheap.
Cracking vid gordy - always a pleasure to dive with you. You definitely made the most of the crap local vis, some stunning fish you’ve had. Here’s to a successful 2024, and maybe our first overseas venture 😉
Great video. Thanks for sharing your 'mistakes', I think for an aspiring Spearo they are as interesting and educational as most succesful hunts on RU-vid! Let's hope for another weather window before the year ends 🤞🏻
This is SO true. I started spearfishing in the Med with a very cheap gun, cheap wetsuit, reasonable mask and flippers. It forced me to dive deep, have a good breath-hold and learn to read the fish. I had no money to spend on expensive gear. YET, I enjoyed it so much and caught so many fish and octopus. (Sadly now I'm fat, unhealthy, can't freedive so well, still poor and still believe in spearfishing on a low budget!)
"a bit of rubber and a sharp pointy bit" AMEN. I love my Cressi 75cm, no thrills, gets the job done. had it for years. I don't think the brand/gun matters, it's all about getting familiar with your gun and knowing how it handles and shoots.
You managed to dive to the floor at the wind farm? I thought that was about 30m deep? What particular conditions do you recommend diving wind farm? I dived there 2022 at high tide but current made it undivable.
I don't dive to the floor, I stop part way. It can be a really dangerous place to dive, particularly if there is a lot of swell and current. The current gets magnified beside the towers, so you have to target the small sheltered areas infront/behind the towers. You can use the Windy app to predict currents (add it in more layers, then it's under Waves) - the best time to go is when the current is under 1 kt. And most importantly, make sure you have a dive buddy that you can really trust.
Out of curiosity from a complete newbie spearo: What's the thinking of a 2-band gun? I had my baby steps in spearing last year and got an 80cm single-band. So far it has treated me well, but I have never speared in the UK. Is the power/range of double bands needed in the UK? (or is that simply due to your very short gun?)
Hi! Where I mainly spearfish (Sussex) often has poor visibility, so short guns are very useful. The double band allows me to use the same gun to be effective at a greater range on the odd occasion that the visibility is better - without having to change gun. It certiantly isn't required here!
Bro it's been a long winter eh! I keep getting notifications of "memories" from posts I put up on FB and IG and this time last year I'd shot loads of fish already. Great video dude and it was good diving with you the other day 👍 Hope everything goes ok with the surgery 👊
Great video mate- fun seeing everything you’ve done the past year! Been a pleasure getting to dive with you- thank you for memorable diving experiences in the UK!
Great video mate, and good diving with you this year, I hope you and your family had a great Christmas and have have a happy new year! Hopefully we can get some dives in together in 2023 :)
