Because it’s indicative of strength and mobility, and inability to do it has been shown to be a predictor of mortality. Check out Sit-Rise test

I can easily do with straight legs (and that’s what I did all my life) but tried with crossed and couldn’t do it 😢

Doesn't the level of the hips matter? I was taught when hips lower than knee it's fine to have toe as far forward as you can.
