I have done a few. I used kilz primer, about 3 coats on most of them. However, on a few I just wiped it with alcohol and painted strait on the rust. I like the way the paint flows over the texture of the rust but, like you, I was concerned about the long term adhesion. It is probably best to prime it first. Either way it is always possible to scratch the paint off when it's dry if you're not carefully. Nothing I have found is perfect.

@@BenCollinsArt thank you! I will use primer on it then paint with acrylics...did you spray it will acrylic varnish to keep it from getting any damage? would the Workable Fixatif...by krylon work once the paint is cured? I use it on most of my canvas paintings!

Are the paints you use acrylics? can I use Liquitex acrylics while painting on a saw?
