The Phonamana Channel is about bike riding adventures on Bike Trails around the Florida area like Pinellas Trail, Tri-County Trail, Starkey Gap, or Jay B Starkey Wildnerness Trails, Tampa Upper Bay Trails, Good Neighbor Trail or the Connector Trail or the Withlacoochie Trail. Practically any trail connected to C2C or Coast To Coast Trails. Some around Pinellas County, some around the trails in the Tampa, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, Trinity, Brooksville area and any new asphalt trails on the West Coast that may pop up. On occasion I will do a review or post videos from Panama.
Looking forward to this section being completed. Will do the Richloam route weather permitting this winter. I realize you are about 1.5 hours away by vehicle but if you get out here anytime we all would appreciate any updates on the most dangerous section. Govt websites are okay but boots on the ground are the best. Your vids and efforts are appreciated.
I rode by Tuesday August 6th and I saw 5 pilings on or near the barge. The one piling that was been installed in the video is the last one they put in. It looked like they had equipment over where the trail is supposed to go and it looked like they were started to prep the surface to put cement down but, after the storm Debby hit, the trail part was a little flooded so, that will probably cause a set back there.
Continue to send the link to your C2C vids to my riding bros as to prepare for the ride. Your mission here and all your recordings are appreciated Dave. Stay safe and watch out for those snakes in Starky Park😂
Thanks! Snakes like the asphalt trails and the roads. If there is water nearby, it's possible to see a water moccasin nearby. I saw two in one week near the Brooker Creek Education center. The week prior to me see it, I was riding by and a deer started to splash around in the water there and scared the crap out of me. I think there may have been a water moccasin after it in that same water there.
The one that I rode right in front on the Suncoast Trail on my century ride was less than a foot from my foot. I was lucky it didn't strike me. The 1st one I ever saw, I was expecting to see a big snake that day and it was at the very North End of the Tri-County Trail and it was before the Starkey Gap trail was opened. I didn't have a GoPro back then but, took photos of the skid marks in my shorth...I mean on the ground from my tires skidding out. The snakes won't bite us unless we get to close to them or we provoke them to bite us. Good thing we shouldn't die instantly if they do bite us and we have time to get to a Hospital unless we are in the middle of nowhere.
I will when it cools off a little. It's too hot to ride in the day time and filming at night doesn't work out too well. Plus the lightning storms we've been having have been unpredictable and dangerous and they pop out of nowhere. Plus I am just getting back on my bike after having surgery on some non-life threatening skin cancer that was on my forehead where my helmet touches so, I have to take time to let it heal. When I get better and it cools off and the weather gets bettter, I plan on exploring some small trails in New Tampa. These heat has lately has been brutal. I used to not care and I rode in 100 degree weather but, I am getting old for that sh*t...LOL. I really like riding in the evening time now when it's cooler out.
@@Phonamana Yes for sure this summer the storms just pop up and are crazy. They used to move in from the east and you could have some warnings about them heading to you, but not so much now. Just random storms whenever wherever. Not good for any outdoor activities.
@@MikeX3000 It's been that way for years. We have to keep looking up because it takes less than 20 minutes for a storm to form over our heads. I was the bad heat a heat dome way before the weather people were. This was the first year I heard them mention it. I think us cyclists notice the difference in the weather before they do.
Things, I am interested in capturing video on are the Howard Franklin Bridge when it opens at the end of the year. The new bridge and trail near Tampa Rd behind Boot Ranch. When the trail from 301 along SR-50 officially opens. The South project of the Pinellas Trail loop. All of this will take patience. Other than that I have almost 300 videos on my RU-vid that I need to touch up and repost. I would like to ride on the Withlacoochie Trail. I've only ridden the small route there for the C2C. It's seems like a very nice shaded trail. That could be on my list to go capture video on. I will wait until it cools off a little. Even with shade, it can still be brutally hot.
@@richblackman-yw8dq Thank You! I was thinking about riding it again soon but, the thunderstorms are too unpredictable. The storms just appear out of anywhere. That stretch passed the St. Pete Presbyterian Church when I turn to go right is terrible. If you look at my C2C Leg 1 video I go left and show a shorter route that has food places too.
I rode by the cement street light poles last night and they were all moved off the path and closer to the road or parking lot. Now we just have to wait for someone in charge to push the button to put the cement trail there.
@@jenniferpiersee9823 there really isn't a lot of traffic using that offramp. Plus there's almost enough apace for two cars. I use a flasher as well. I've been riding on it a few times a week for the last couple of years and never had a problem.
LOL I didn't want to find out if it looked up at me what it would do. I was mooing at the cows a long time ago at the Brooker Creek Preserve when the Tri-County Trail was new and the cows were scared of cyclists because we were new there to them. I spotted a bull there on the mound after doing that and it was looking at me. I stopped to take a photo of the bull but, it became very enraged and started to charge toward the little fence that was there. I darted out of there on my bike as fast as I could. I didn't want to find out if that little fence was going to hold up. That day, I wasn't even wearing red. LOL
It almost doesn't matter where we ride in Pinellas County. It's dangerous everywhere! A guard rail is being put up there soon so, that will help keep trail users safer.
He forgot to bring a scale to weigh the wire. I'm guessing it was okay when they 1st put it up but, probably with strong winds and aging it probably started to sag or the poles could have sank too. I know there was a dent in the cable from being hit. A truck that was too tall might have hit and stretched the tension out of the cable. You saw how close that tree truck got right? I assume it was a truck like that that hit it.
It was doing more than that. They were trying very hard to stop when they saw me. In the video, they don't appear to be going as fast as they were because they were braking hard. The people that ride on the bikes on East Lake Rd are nuts when there is a trail right here. A deadly freak accident just happened on Thursday just South of this location around 1 pm. The driver caused it on the North side of the road and the accident ended up on the guard rail next to Pinellas Trail on the Southside of East Lake Rd. www.yahoo.com/news/crash-serious-injuries-shuts-down-210421063.html I am glad that guard rail is there. I used to ride around 1 pm but, I've been riding later in the afternoon when it's cooler. I am glad I didn't see that happen or see it after...two days after my incident.
Do you think that the vehicle would not have crossed the crosswalk had I stopped at that stop sign? My answer is no. As I explained to people on the Facebook page that brought up the same subject was that I wasn't bickering about this. We're human and we make mistakes. I was telling people to be careful with the farthest lane that people turn in because this happens a lot. If you look in my description, I shared another similar situation with another vehicle that cut across in front of me but, that time I saw it coming further away. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gDpc8nVqzJY.htmlsi=a5PP66vj-bQ1ylM-&t=460
You're Welcome! Thanks for watching. Miss your what? I'm pretty sure I'm going to catch that Bus 54 to the Shops at Wiregrass sometime later but, not this week because we are supposed to have bad weather. Every one of those sub divisions looked like they had some kind of bike trail leading into them. If the trails are anything like the trails at Starkey Ranch then they should be fun to ride on. I think this area will be fun to explorer some more.
@@brucebrosius5372 yes, sorry I didn't catch that. This day with my plans falling apart put a lot of things on my mind starting with the antifreeze leaking out of bad hose on car.
Well, not so much at me. Sometimes they get mad when the vehicle in front of them stops for me and they don't see me so, they honk their horn at the vehicle in front of them not knowing why they stopped. I show an example in a recent video that I shared when I crossed East Lake Rd in Tarpon Springs.
The bags were magically gone yesterday...not but, they were out of sight in the bushes somewhere. You wouldn't notice them unless you were looking for them as I was.
I am glad it was your favorite. It probably my least favorite but, I am glad it is there to get us from one to the next. I waited many years for them to complete the Starkey Gap. I used to get zapped here a lot of my Schwinn Varsity bike and up near SR-54 where we go under the low hanging power lines. The power lines emit high EMF and it was causing static shocks with me on my handle bars.
Why would they do that to children's books? That's awful! Thanks for letting me know! This low cable is a safety issue because the bike trail is right there and if something hits the cable again, it could be in the busy roadway. The cable people were out there two days later and fixed one up the road by putting a pole in the median to support the weight but, they were at the wrong location.
I saw an orange vest on that trail there and I felt like they would yell at me because they have to if I went back there. I am guessing after quiting time, we can go down that trail there.
Thanks Dave. Big ole gator in the retention pound there at Boot Ranch Woodlands Blvd in February. Will be nice when they get that project done. The detour could be problematic.
Wow! I didn't know that...but, now that you are mentioning it, maybe Chip mentioned it once on the Friends of Pinellas Trail Facebook page before. I have seen junkies back there before that quickly wrapped up whatever business they were doing before I rolled by them around there before. That's why I don't like going that way.
I thought I replied here before. I must not have hit reply. A few weeks ago, I took some Dawn dish soap and put it on a rag and cleaned the disc and then hosed it off. There was a lot of stuff on the discs. That actually did the trick and cleaned them. I let them dry over night and there's no more squeeling anymore. I had tried using automotive disc brake cleaner before and it didn't do anything. What I felt on there on the discs before I cleaned it with the Dawn was rough. I am glad they are clean now and the squeeling has stopped. That was not helping my videos. That is for sure.
it's an urbanish area. I was surprised there was even a sidewalk there. There used to not be one there. I was surprised to see that squirrel found some kind of nut bar out there. That was hilarious to see it with that. I wished I had stopped to capture more of it on video.
@@Phonamana yeah, the sheriff pulled up behind me halfway over the bridge. Very friendly, young kid and he followed behind me to make sure I crossed over safely. Nicest one in uniform that I encountered.
I did the trail two weeks ago. I really appreciate all these videos you produce, as you give us updates while "on patrol" on the C2C. Curious, what app/device is giving the female voice callouts on distance, avg speed, time of day, etc. Ambivalent about whether I like the announcements 🙂. Thanks, and be safe!
Thank you! I use MapMyRide. I think I set the speech to an Australian Girl's voice. I use it in the video mainly for the time. My GoPro time has to be set every time I change a batter. There used to be a bug in the MapMyRide app and somwtimes when I took a picture, the voice tone would change that sounded like an old smoking hag with a groggy voice. I used to joke that it was a smoker in a bar...going..."you're doing Great kid"...hahaha! That's how raspy her voice got.
I checked the view point on Google maps and that side road near the tracks wasn't even there in March of 2023. I am glad it's there now. Here's the map. www.google.com/maps/@28.5074464,-82.1580645,3a,55.4y,160.59h,87.04t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sf-mhWkhZPclwOtyuuLDRSQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu
That was the Blues Brothers...haha! Thank you! I try! I did scare one with antlers back into the bushes North of there and the next time I went back that way, it was killed by a vehicle and that really bothered me. What you don't see in the video is I did turn around and I tried to scare them deeper into the woods but, they just kept about their business eating whatever seeds were on the ground and ignoring me. At least this time when I went back I didn't see any deer hit at this location so, I am glad for that. People really got to stop feed them. That's why the deer were not scared of me. They come right up to people in the park and eat right out of their hands. However if one of the deer in a group dart, they all will but, none of them did with me.
Thanks for this informative video and the narrative. It certainly reaffirms my decision to avoid this portion of the C2C by cutting through the Green Swamp (on a gravel bike) when I did it E-W just a couple of days after you filmed this. It'll be great when they close this gap, but until then, no thanks. Be safe!
If you got a Gravel bike then by all means go the other way. If I had a gravel bike, I may have gone the logger road way but, I didn't waste my time because I knew my tires would have gotten stuck there. I had thought about asking my friend to loan me his gravel bike for the logger dirt road way but, I got tired of waiting and I just went for it on SR-50. I don't have any problem with that portion near the the train tracks. If traffic got too heavy, it's only a short distance to walk on the side there. The portion where the asphalt is for the 3 mile before Linden will be opening I think this Summer but, the rest has parts where they won't be looked at until June of 2026. If it's not this Summer that it's opening then it will be the next.
@@howardmontaque8147 thanks for pointintg that out. I didn't even see that. The car behind it got close to the line too. It's a good thing that I got off the road then to look back from a safe spot and go when the traffic was clear. That bike lane at that point was pretty narrow and that's why I got off the road. I could hear the traffic coming.
@@Phonamana Definitely sketchy. We took the gravel route though Richlome. I am wondering what the trail addition will be like when its done. I dont play with automobiles.
@@howardmontaque8147 this fdot plan says the portion of the South Sumter Asphalt Trail that goes up to close to Tarrytown will be completed by Spring 2024 which we are in Spring 2024 now so, that should be opened soon. www.cflroads.com/project/435859-3 I assume the portion to Burwell Rd will be open soon too but, the train track part and that ramp part to go over the tracks will be opened in the Spring of 2025 next year according to this. www.fdottampabay.com/project/546/442835-1-52-01 I am not one to ride in the road and I prefer a sidewalk if there is one. There wasn't that much traffic using SR-50 when I went riding to Groveland after 11:00 am. When I woke at the Motel, I could hear the traffic on SR-50 and it was pretty bad but, when I was capturing video, SR-50 was pretty calm. For me just knowing when the times of the traffic will be calmer, helps. I didn't intentionally go riding in this video around 3 pm. I had to capture video on the Good Neighbor trail that I missed when I first captured video there on my actual C2C Ride so, I was capturing video there first and the I came here and that's why I was riding around there so late after 3 pm which I thought was going to be worse than it seemed when I there.
You are welcome! I'm not glad that I missed capturing video the first time I was there but, I am glad I came back and found that back road there. I was glad that I got to go to the Richloam General Store too.
SR-50 roadwork and bike trail is coming along well. I was there just a few weeks ago. I didn't see that animal-crossing tunnel last time I was there, cool.
I saw it both times. On my C2C ride and when I drove back there. The first time I heard about Animal Crossings like that was when they built the trail on Ridge Road that's North of Jay B Starkey Park. I think that one on Ridge Rd goes underneath and it doesn't cross the bike path. In my video here, I was actually surprise to see the construction going on on the other side of SR-50. I thought that Florida Scenic Trail was an existing trail already. I saw it on the Google Maps.
It looks like they recently put that sod down near that tunnel too. It's still brown color and we've had rain so, if it was put down months ago, it should have been green but, it was brown. I just noticed that when I looked at the video again.
I know you have ridden next to SR-50 a couple of times and on the C2C. It must be exciting for you to see the progress being made on all parts of the trail including the SR-50 part.
@@Phonamana I've done SR-50 two previous time all away and now I did partly till I turned into Richloam WMA. Exiting to see that they're adding a bike lane next to it.
@@FollowThomas Oh, did they not have a bike lane next to SR-50 before when you rode it for your first time in your first C2C Video? I thought you were crazy the first time that I saw you ride that but, I thought you had a bike lane. There's no way I would have rode that without a bike lane there. That would be crazy! I felt pretty safe on it and because I use a flashing bright red tail light on my bike, actually two them and I wore a red shirt that I felt safer than I would have without the flashers or red shirt. It did surprise me when I heard the first car to go over the double yellow line to give me extra space and bwap sound coming from their tires. There is like indentions near the double yellow line and the white painted bike lane line that if a tire crosses over it makes the bwap sound. I had found somebody's flasher light so, I had an extra one. It was a nice bright one. It had a mode on it to flash blue and red but, I think that is illegal to use with red and blue flashing lights so, I just stuck to the red flashing light mode on that light.
Looking forward to all this project coming together and your updates. The maintenance worker shouted something when I went through the apartment lot and less than a week later the temporary fence went up.
It will be mid 2025 according to the board I saw yesterday. Nobody says anything to me there. It's bullocks that a fence is put up there with no detour. Those people that live there rely on that path there to get to the Boot Ranch shopping plaza and elsewhere. Before the trail North of that there was a sidewalk that got ripped out and then nothing was done for a year and a half. It made it very dangerous for everyone. I'm glad there is a trail there now but, it sucked for that year and a half that we couldn't ride there.
I had no problem with SR-50. There's only a dangerous part that goes about a mile or less to the East of US -301 and then there is 8.3 miles of asphalt trail that will be part of the South Sumter Gap. You can see it in my video. I was just uploading another video a couple hours ago showing a way to get around that bad part when my power went out. I will probably have to upload it again when, the power comes back on. It was in the HD phase when my power went out. My next video will show a way around it so, keep your eyes open for it. Hopefully it will be up this evening.
That was a walk in the park compared to when I made my way up Gunn Hwy to connect to both Upper Tampa Bay Trails on Superbowl Sunday. They are finally going to connect the two Upper Tampa Bay trails thanks to me contacting the district commissioner's office. I didn't know it until after I rode there and someone on Facebook said something to me when I showed my ride in a group.
Here's that video that I mentioned before. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0SDoeYzpl00.html I just published it a few minutes ago. I found a safer route near the train tracks on SR-50 to get us to the asphalt trail that starts at Bruwell road. There is a timeline I made in the description. My Favorite part is going into the animal tunnel crossing 24:00 minutes into the video. I learn something new every day with video editing work.
