Thank you for being so honest about the loss of plants in the terrarium. I've been beating myself up for the same reason, so ashamed that i even have a hard time sharing. About 10 years ago i had my own terrarium loaded with superexpensive hybrids and almost all of the summer blooming phal species imaginable, it was my proud and joy, my everything. Then i had to move and couldn't take them with me for about a year. In the meantime my mom took care of them but a combined attack of red mites and black rot took all of my precious plants within a couple of weeks. ALL of them.. And i couldn't do anything about it. I feel so devastated and thoroughly ashamed right until this moment. Just can't wrap my head around the fact that i let that happen, but yeah that's true. In that enclosed, fragile environment i wouldn't have had a chance even if i was present and ready to fight... Well, that's life, but still a very heartbreaking experience. Has just been recently getting back in the orchid game as i cannot live without them.. Hope i've learned the lesson and i'll also have better luck this time.

Great update! I really like your seedlings and looking forward to their growth ! Everything grows so well in your place , what fertiliser do you use? Also terrarium failure is upsetting but your success in growing the orchid seedlings are much higher, so I wouldn't mind . However I'm sure whenever you are less busy, you can give it a go again and start with less plants in there. Do you have any video on your terrarium? Looking forward to your phragmopidium video. Mine don't bloom, don't know why? May be they need more water than I give to them? Thanks for the update and sharing. Happy growing.

J. Donoghue hahaha - I donno...I crunched the numbers and the amount I’d have to create and sell to make a living wage...I don’t know if it’s worth it. I once pursued a career with my old hobby. It sucked the joy out of it and I lost interest after I saw the business side of it. I think my fear with trying to make orchids my livelihood is that they would reach the same fate. It would be nice just to grow plants all day long though. Lol

I'm so glad you showed off the aroids. Apparently the Forgetii is extremely rare, but I'm just not crazy about most plants with the stem in the middle (like pilea peperomioides), I am still not sure if your Clarinervium (when I pronounce it I think of clarinet, and nerves) is actually Crystallinum, because those seem to have much more veins, and fewer large green areas. The pattern on your leaf does look like Clarinervium to me. The main difference is also in the shape of the actual vein pattern. Crystallinum has radiating lines all converging in the centre, while Clarinervium kind of has curved arcs around the edges. Compare with these photos: abrimaal.pro-e.pl/araceum/anthurium/crystallinum.htm It's hard to be sure since the plant is still fairly small, and both look really similar. It also seems weird that the stems on yours look kind of beige as opposed to light green. I still can't wait for mine to arrive. They shipped it today, and it should arrive in 3 days, so before end of business day on Thursday (Aug 1st). I also JUST saw another video with one featured in it (there are surprisingly few videos on them) and the girl said it's SUPER easy to take care of. Will tolerate low humidity, infrequent watering, ships well, etc. See: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vbCE8a7WYpw.html Very sad to see the terrarium. Do you plan to clear it all out and rebuild it, maybe with a backup pump? Or are you abandoning the idea?

JC - terrarium is done. Back in the day I used to have a small indoor greenhouse. It had the same fate...a rip formed and I fixed it, but the threads had aged and while I was away, a second rip happened and I lost all of my nepenthes. After this experience, I just don’t have the patience to start over again. Regarding the aroids: my pleasure. I’m glad they’re establishing well. For clarinervium vs. crystallinum, it all comes down to the shape of the leaf. Clarinervium have big lobes at the top and the leaf mimics a big heart 💚 (which I’m sure you know), but my plant has small lobes, nothing near what photos of clarinervium look like. I’ll wait for the new leaf to complete and show a side by side. But, the other possibility is that it’s a hybrid. I don’t really care either way though. I just wanted plants with that veining.

@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 4 года назад
Hi Hydi! Thanks for following along - it's so great to hear you're trying this yourself. It takes about 10-21 days for the green to start showing up. Generally you'll notice that the seeds get a bit swollen first (like little grains of sand), then they green up. Some types take longer, some shorter. I wish you luck with your new seedling project

Ange - yes, I’d ideally like to sell them and only keep a few. Only problem is, shipping orchids internationally is prohibited unless you have the right paperwork. The cost/process associated with getting those documents is quite high, so at least for the foreseeable future, I will only be selling within Canada :(

Hi, I'd like to know if it's possible to cross a phalaenopsis with a Vanda or bulbophyllum? Thanks in advance!
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 4 года назад
Andreas - sometimes you can cross closely-related species from different genera and it’s considered an intergeneric hybrid. For example, there are some Vanda x phalaenopsis hybrids...but it is rare. Google “vandaenopsis” and you’ll see a long list of examples of crosses like this. Phalaenopsis crossed with a bulbophyllum would be too distant and would not work.

Great video. I have a question. If I have contaminations can I just spray alcohol or h2o2 into the flask?
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 3 года назад
You could try. However, by the time you get a visible infection, there are many cells growing both above and within the media so, I don’t think a topical application like that would work. Also, alcohol will likely kill the seedlings-as would enough peroxide. But...I haven’t tried it. A better bet would be to use PPM - plant preservative media which you add directly to the media preventatively before you flask. I haven’t used it yet, but it’s supposed to prevent microbial growth and reduce risk of contamination

I’m using a canning jar brand called Bernardin without all the fancy “decorations” on the glass, and for the lid it’s a brand called “Ball” Leakproof plastic lids. I picked them both up at Walmart in the food/canning section-but I’m in Canada so your local supplies may be different

what do you do with the agar that got contaminated? do you recycle it somehow?
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 4 года назад
Na - if it's contaminated, the fungi and/or bacteria can secrete compounds which are toxic. I normally leave them for a bit (until any flask work is long finished), then discard the contaminated media by taking the flasks outside, open the jar, add a half-jar of soapy dish-water and shake them up, then disposing the contents. Then I'll sterilize those flasks for 20 mins in the pressure cooker to ensure any residual bacteria or fungus has been totally destroyed

@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 4 года назад
rogelio - yeah, well I guess that’s how it goes, right? Not a lot of resources on this out there, so you have to experiment and get through it yourself. I haven’t reused contaminated media because it just seems like a bit of a mess all around (double cooking ingredients, possible toxins, dealing with possible reinfection, etc).

I hadn't heard of that - though I might be a bit worried that tobacco mosaic virus could infect my plants? I know there are a few strains of orchid viruses which originated from TMV, but I don't know how easily those viruses jump between species like that. At this point I think I have most of the bugs in check. I'm just doing spot treatments now (thankfully)
