All right, King Killers, this show is all about deep dive rereads into all the most famous fantasy series around.

The first series they are covering is The King Killer Chronicles trilogy by Patrick Rothfuss. This is a series that our hero of the podcast, Dapper Dan, has read many many times and has dove into all the theories for where the story is going in the yet to be released book 3. Super lame, Tiny Tim, has read both books multiple times but isn’t familiar with much of the deeper theories. Which actually fits perfectly with his shallow and pedantic nature. Our last, and certainly least, host is the illiterate alliterationist, Furry Fitz. He has read both books just once and brings in that wobbly new baby deer feel to the episodes.

If you ever wanted to get deeper insights into this series and hear about Kvothe’s lineage, Denna’s patron, and the hidden meaning behind the poems, among many other theories, then dive right in. Just be prepared to have your nips blasted off!

I could see something like that. The story turns the moon into an actual woman but the reality being it was Felurian and the moon is just a moon or magical in some other way.

Great analysis. Personally, my guess is that Encanis is the true evil force in this story. And I think he is the Cteah. With Iax being more of a tragic victim of the Cteah in the same vain as Kvote. The story of Menda chaining Encanis (the most evil of all demons) to the great iron wheel, I think is analogues to Encanis being bound to a tree in the Fea. but I think they likely could not destroy him (keep him behind the door of death) so binding him to the tree makes more sense. The archery of the Sith / and the link with archery to the Adem is also interesting here. It would mean thet Menda likely founded the sith and they are likely the starting point for the Adem also, as they were first very focussed on archery. Perhaps the Sith were Menda's faction in the Fea, and the Adem where his faction in the mortal realm. In order to chase and kill those who had spoken to Cteah and had fled into the mortal world. They would want to kill those people from a distance with arrows the same as they do in Fea.

The Ruach couldn’t have ruled over men. Ruach weren’t around with men. Ferlurian is one of them and she said this was “before the cities of man. Before man. Before fae.”
@kingkillerpodcast8559
@kingkillerpodcast8559 12 дней назад
When I say ruled over men, I’m more meaning there were likely immortal and mortal beings, and the Ruach ruled over them. My guess is that by creating the Fae and stealing the moon that this clearly delineated man and fae creations, but before that it was more immortal and mortal beings.

One thing that confuses me is that the chronicler has a book in the library before koveth went to the university however he attended the university after koveth so was he chasing the wind the entire time koveth was there or what happened there.

Yeah it has to be that he either went there before Kvothe but left for a time, or got started later in life after he was already an author and started after Kvothe was gone. The way he describes hearing his first stories about Kvothe make me think it’s the latter.

Love how you could really be logically correct in assuming that Kvothe needs wild life-threatening sex for the rest of his life to really get the charge he started with. It’s a weird thing to talk about - but probably not wrong. Hilarious.

I think the candle is a symbol for hope in the engtire series. Haliax/Lanre is often depicted with a Candle and Thelu also had one. I think the Black candle symbolizes the loss of hope. Auri is trying to equip Kvite with cape, key and candle. Perhaps because she is preparing him for something.

Felurians personal reaction to his questions about the 7 I think is telling. I believe she might very well have been personally involved much more then we know. We know she was there the entire war. And I believe that, like the seven, she had her own name changed in order to become what she is. So she is a lot like the chandrian herself. Having a power around her which is automatic. Her sign is desire.

The Cthaeh (I believe) is the bound Encanis from Thelu's legend. As he is described as the most evil and powerful of all the demons and there are many clues that skindancers are his agents (he moves like a worm in fruit). Also his voice like a snake fits, and that he was bound to a wheel which would prevent him from lying (the Cthaeh can't lie because the wheel/tree will hurt him). So Encanis is the heart of all Evil, and Encanis literaly means something like Wizard or magical speaker or even singer (encanta) So that makes Thelu the highest good god and Encanis (Cthaeh) the ultimate good in the world of KK.

Totally agree that Roderick Calanthis is toast. I think the blue and black butterfly could be Cinder. The "bad turn once" makes me think of a wheel turning. And the only consequential wheel we have in the series is the giant iron wheel. It's not my theory, but I read a decently compelling theory that Cinder is Tehlu on reddit long ago. A burnt up, transformed Tehlu. Tehlu and Cinder are both described with the same dark eyes, and the mask Cinder wears hides the burn scars on his face. I can't do it all justice here, but it was a good read. So, if the Cthaeh = Encanis and Cinder = Tehlu, the "bad turn" would be his pinning on the wheel when they both burned in the fire. Probably isn't true, but it was a fun theory to read.

I think it’d have to be wrong considering Skarpi’s story of Tehlu becoming an Angel. Which would’ve happened after the Chandrian were formed and took down the seven cities. I could see something like Cinder having been Taborlin.

How do you guys interpret the Cthaeh saying that many would envy Kvothe for the chance to speak with it? As we know the Cthaeh does not lie, but everyone we ever met who knows of it is absolutely terrified. So who would actually want to be able to speak with it? 🤔
@kingkillerpodcast8559

I think a lot of people would love a chance to speak with an all-knowing being. Especially one with rhinna flowers, a panacea, around it. Plenty of people would be arrogant enough to believe they would be the exception to the rule of it leading them to disaster. We know major figures like Iax and Lanre sought it out. Lanre likely in desperation to bring back Lyra, which would also be a type of person who would seek out such a malevolent force.

We're told that Jax' house is at the end of a broken road, and we know that the University is at the end of the great stone road. It seems pretty likely that the tinker in Hespa's story ends up building the first university out of Jax' house, which ends up becoming the underthing. And to add a tinfoil hat theory: It's mentioned in the story that the box which traps the moon is small enough to close your fist around. As you often say, these details aren't random. So maybe it's not the Lackless box, but it's the thing inside the Lackless box. Having a box within a box is kind of weird to have in your story, but it would fit with Kvothe also locking something precious away in a box. Or maybe the fact that it's small is hinting that it's a jewelry box? We know that when namers learn the name of something, they make a ring of it. So maybe Jax made a stone ring from a moon stone.

So we learn early on in the books that Kvothe taught himself how to hide things from himself in his mind. I feel like the Thrice locked chest follows that same vein. I think Kvothe has hidden how to open the chest from himself (or from Kote) and hasn’t yet retrieved/found the answer of how to unlock it from deep inside his mind. I’ll have to re-read that passage to fully form this theory for sure haha. For now it’s just a bit of an idea?

If the Amyr didn't want a Lackless heir, why wouldn't they just go after Meluan? We're told that she has two dozen suitors, so are the Amyr going to whack them all? And why only now? I don't buy that it would be because of the poem or a Lackless heir. But we know Alveron looked into the Amyr in his youth, so it's possible there's a different connection there. It could even have been Meluan who arranged it, in order to make Alveron desperate. She wasn't getting any younger, and if Alveron had been healthy, he could have stayed single for another 20 years. Kvothe even says "Everyone sees you as the worlds first bachelor", so he clearly had a reputation for staying single. So maybe Meluan decided to light a fire under his ass, being careful to not kill him. But that also wouldn't explain what motivated Caudicus to do the deed. On that point I think you're right; it would have to be either Roderick or the Amyr. Those are the only factions we know are stronger than Alveron. This was a fun episode!
@kingkillerpodcast8559
@kingkillerpodcast8559 Месяц назад
I don’t think Meluan would work as Alveron was about to die had Kvothe not intervened. He nearly died, anyways. Plus, they caught Caudicus and seemingly know why he did it after torturing him, so that rules her out. Amyr, Roderic, or Chandrian seem to be the most likely suspects given the nature of the story left to tell.
@whynotdean8966

@@kingkillerpodcast8559 Hey man, even if Caudicus spilled the beans, Alveron still needs an heir. He might be like "Yeah you tried to kill me, but bear me sons and we're square". He's a practical man! It was mostly just for fun, just because it was a theory I came up with it on the spot haha.

Here’s some speculation: how about Kvothe changes his name & locks “the important thing” (the lockless box, which (maybe) contains a key, or an important component to creating the key, to doors of stone?), THEN realizes Denna is trapped behind doors. Or perhaps he’s closed off the path between his world & they fey, learns Denna is now trapped there, the evil things have become trapped in the human world & he can’t fix it because he no longer has access to the fey part of himself that gave him his extraordinary skill. All he had left to him is his sharp mind. He could have listened to Bast, who is fey & is sort of a “first order thinker” as a result, and now Bast can’t go home, & wants Kvothe back so he can go home. I dunno. As I mentioned, purely speculation.

Regarding your discussion at around 1:04:50, Rothfuss made a good effort to establish a hard magic system, but it's still a little broken (mostly due to artificing). Your example with the draccus could be resolved if we assume that the wasted energy results in slippage. The draccus would be transferring a ton of energy into the coin, but 99.999% of it is being "wasted". I.E. going into the arcanist. Though as you've brought up before; we really don't know enough about slippage yet to say for certain.
@kingkillerpodcast8559
@kingkillerpodcast8559 Месяц назад
Yeah, it’s a tricky dance because he’d have to explain slippage in a way that doesn’t also wreck previous scenes. Because we’ve seen bad links happen a bunch without any mention of anything remotely negative happening. They even test with very bad links in class. Kvothe with the straw as an example, and the issue from that was he pulled heat from his blood, not the bad link. So I’m curious how he’d resolve it.
@whynotdean8966
@whynotdean8966 Месяц назад
@@kingkillerpodcast8559 Well in the straw example, the energy came from himself, and the slippage would just go back into himself. So I don't think that would be a problem. But there's still other things that break the magic system, such as the siege stone. Why couldn't you just make a bunch of siege stones and use them in slingshots? They obviously don't obey the "every action has an equal and opposite reaction". We also hear about cold boxes which break the second law of thermodynamics, and can be used to create infinite energy.
@kingkillerpodcast8559
@kingkillerpodcast8559 Месяц назад
OK, but if him linking two very different things only causes his energy to go back into himself and that’s not a problem, then linking other very different things shouldn’t be a problem, either.
@whynotdean8966
@whynotdean8966 Месяц назад
@@kingkillerpodcast8559 The important thing is how much energy is being dissipated. With the straw and the candle, it's not a lot of energy (because it's coming from himself - body heat). But with the draccus and the coin, it's an immense amount of energy that's being dissipated in order to keep the draccus pinned. That being said, I can't answer why you couldn't bind the air in the draccus' lungs, like he did with the air in his own lungs as a kid. It can't be slippage, but maybe there's a proximity thing? It seems like you have to be pretty close to things in order to link them.
@kingkillerpodcast8559
@kingkillerpodcast8559 Месяц назад
It’s possible there is a massive difference in energy dissipated based on whatever factors, but there’s nothing in the book that spells out how all that would work. I agree slippage would have to be the limiting factor but he hasn’t at all explained how it works, yet.

Hey gents love all the content. I have a question I’m curious your thoughts. Where do you think Kvothe’s sword is currently? He promised to the Adam that he would find a way to return the sword in the event of his death. The world believes that he is dead and it seems he went to some lengths to make it so. Would having the sword sent back be one of those things?
@kingkillerpodcast8559
@kingkillerpodcast8559 Месяц назад

I read a theory that Kvothe hasn't lost his power in the frame story and infact he is hiding it. For example when the skin dancer came in Kvothe threw an elderberry bottle at him and mumbled a binding. Given magical properties of the elderberry and what Kvothe did was why the skin dancer wasn't able to jump to another body and died instead. He never wanted to set him on fire as Bast thought. This theory changed my perspective a lot.
@kingkillerpodcast8559
@kingkillerpodcast8559 Месяц назад

The theory about the knots on the Lackless box being worn away seems solid. Nobody recognized them as Yllish(sp?) knots because they don't feel them. Remember when Kvothe recalls discussing with Denna that she's learning knots, there's a line about him learning to sight-read them and she says he's doing it wrong. After he calls the wind the first time he basically goes catatonic, and we learn that it's a common side effect of the sleeping mind awakening for the first time. We can infer from that, that the first time he calls the wind, is the first time his sleeping mind awakens. Not when he's in the forest, or when he's in Tarbean. He didn't seem to handle it better than anyone else, so it's not like his mind had been trained or prepared by what happened to him in his youth.
@kingkillerpodcast8559
@kingkillerpodcast8559 Месяц назад
Disagree. I think it shows that calling a name is a much more powerful feat than simply letting your sleeping mind take over. The sleeping mind isn’t magic, so there’s no reason to assume it puts you in a catatonic state. Naming did that.

Rothfuss has explicitly answered this question: How does Lorren know about Arliden? Arliden had a productive career as a songwriter, not to mention that he had a fairly high profile gig as the lead trouper in Greyfallow’s Men. As such, he wrote a lot of songs, many of which were recorded and attributed to him. But there are a lot of songs in the archives that have been collected and aren’t attributed to anyone. Lorren was going to ask Kvothe for his assistance catalouging these before Kvothe had his hissy-fit at the end of Chapter 36. There. That’s a little secret nobody knew before. See? For sure. My theory is that the people, Ruach shapers, and whoever went into the Fae realm after it was created ended up evolving into Fae creatures. For example, I think the Sithe and Adem likely originated from the same group of Ruach. But the Sithe stay in the Fae and the Adem in the regular world so they diverged from each other from there. And that’s how you end up with satyr and strange creatures in the Fae, but not in The Four Corners. Something about the Fae changes people physically.

I am sure as I can be that Encanis is the Cthaeh, or the other way around if you prefer. As you pointed out, the language, the phrasing (biting and breaking), but also Tehlu and the iron wheel. Tehlu pinning him to the wheel is analogous to the Cthaeh being trapped in the tree. The tree is almost certainly roah wood. Probably has a high iron content, (remember how hard it was to burn for the blacksmith who made the mounting board for Folly.) The Cthaeh at one point says, "do not try to PIN me with small names boy." It's a small thing, but the word PIN stuck out to me, really the only other times in the book PIN is used is the description of Tehlu pinning him to the wheel. One interesting thing I thought of is, what if Tehlu is trapped in the tree with the Cthaeh, and that is why he cannot lie? In the story, Tehlu stays pinned with the wheel to keep Encanis on it. Maybe they fused together in the fire somehow.

It’s certainly an aspect of Encanis. He also as attributes that align with most of the Chandrian, so my best guess is it’s an amalgamation. Similar to how the story has aspects that align with the Creation War while having a setting well after it with Angels already existing.

Is it just me, or could there be a sinister undertone in Kote/Kvothe telling Aaron "I'll tell you stories nobody will ever hear again"? Because if chronicler publishes the text he's compiling, then all sorts of people will hear the stories he's telling.

Could be. We definitely talk about that aspect in some of the episodes.

I argue that Heliax wasn't calling Cinders name, Ferula is the name of iron. Why? Think of the preceding chapter in the frame story. The reaction was the same between Bast/Cinder. And it's more proof that "Kote" can't use his sleeping mind so only heard iron, but Kvothe at that time was using his sleeping mind and heard Ferula (iron is FE on the periodic table, FE for Ferrus) instead of Iron. Presented for your consideration.

The problem with that theory would be that Shehyn gives the names of the Chandrian. “Ferule chill and dark of eye.”

What if I said I could prove pretty convincingly that Ferule/Ferula is not Cinder's name?

After listening to the depth you’ve added to Kilvin’s character, I think Rothfuss made a mistake. Clearly, Kilvin is the main character of this story.

I skimmed over a couple parts of this video so I don't know if you go into it, but Rothfuss has said that he added a ton of stuff to book 2 that was never planned. Notably one of the things he added to book 2 was Tak. This could imply that Bredon was also a late addition to book 2. If that's true, then Denna's patron was probably originally supposed to be Cinder, but Rothfuss changed his mind when he added Bredon.

Can't believe I never thought about why the birds would be called Calanthis.. Just to back up the theory even more, the new king is also called the poet king, which would also point to the Maer.

The poet king is what Vashet called the guy she guarded in the small kingdoms. So that’s a different person

45:00 I think the true enemy of the story is the Cthaeh/Encanis. He is the driving force in so much death. Prior to being trapped in the tree, he could lie, thus being able to trick anyone into doing the most despicable things. He started the creation war, created the 7, and put Kvothe on the path to disaster.

25:00 it seems like trapis is telling the story from the church that is currently in power. It is where Teluh came down and started the church while chasing demons.

No, the Tehlins don’t believe Perial is the virgin mother of Tehlu. Trapis is a Mender. Rothfuss has confirmed that. The Mender and the Tehlins both believe Tehlu is God, but the Tehlins believe the story of Menda is heresy. That’s where the term Mender heresies comes from.
