I'm Sheila! An artist, archivist, video creator, and lover of books and stationery. Here my goal is to help you live a slow, intentional life. My sub-intention is to share my life as a mixed race person and increase online representation for folks who identify as Asian American and/or mixed race, and also create a safe & welcoming space for folks who don't feel like they belong. I'd love for you to join my little corner of the internet!
I generate strong attachment to inanimate objects too...and places. Not so much with people. Anyways, I had a coffee mug that was a gift from my sister for Christmas. I named it Muggings. After literally using it every day for 1.5 years It was stolen from me at my then favorite coffee shop. I took it to the bathroom to wash it, after which I then used the bathroom. After using the bathroom I walked back to my laptop to ensure it wasn't stolen and I left Muggings in the bathroom for 15 mins. In that short spam of time, someone stole my mug from on top of the towel dispenser... I had a hole in my chest for a few days...I have since received a replacement mug (Same exact model) and I use it every day, but I don't leave it any where. His name is Muggings Jr. The successor to the lineage.
Congratulations on the art show! I feel the same about writing. I've always been making art since I was small and still do, because given my autism/disability, that was my first mode of communication. The thing is that now, I feel the necessity to word thoughts and my communication in ways that I can articulate as closely to how I feel and think...but writing...man, it's hard! I have some book ideas but it's so difficult at times because my skill level is not at a point of fleshing out a whole story and it's so overwhelming. The amount of time I spend trying to finish a story, editing, learning, and reading books. It's a slow process that takes me years, but I have to respect it. I definitely agree, artists/creatives need periods of stillness and consumption in order to find ourselves and direct our creativity. I'm so glad you had the opportunity to tap into your creative side and dedicate some time to create and celebrate a new project. This was a lovely video. I always like seeing the process of a project. I hope you continue to create at your own pace :)
Love this video! I def get the sleepy slumps every afternoon lol. Sometimes I give in and take a little nap, sometimes I get my walking pad out and walk and work! Or even take a little yoga break. Love this cozy and relaxing vlog!!
I love your videos! I always learn something new from you and get inspired. Ive been wanting to pick up the camera again and get into photography so thank you for that inspiration. Im also inspired to buy some of that Amy’s Mac n cheese this weekend lol I love Amy’s but haven’t tried this dish from her yet. Also I saw that you use Honey Pot pads and I absolutely love them! I’m most looking forward to celebrating the seasons to come and push myself to read more books.
That was a very nice and relaxing vlog, yup about this time of year I feel like I can't wait to get to autumn😂 For me the Sept thru Dec is just more fun, I feel more active and motivated all round!
Oh my gosh, I feel like you read my mind! I don't know if it's the heat or something else, but I get so groggy in the afternoons that I've been napping everyday instead of doing all of the things that I told myseld I would do 🥵😴 I used to get annoyed with myself, but I'm learning to accept that it's better to just let myself rest instead of staying awake, but being too groggy to do anything
Period pain is the worst! 😢 I was in planning slump too about June and July. Just getting to it back again this month too. So happy that you back YouTubing ❤
Thanks for this. I’m applying to work as an archivist assistant at my old college. Though I did work study there, I’m nervous that I won’t get it. But your videos helped me get back into it. 😄
I just got accepted into college for a Historic Preservation major starting Fall 2025! Archiving is my dream job, and it is so inspiring to see the day-to-day of the job. It keeps me mindful of where I want to go in life, so thank you for the content!
I love this so much! I completely forgot that when I discovered you on RU-vid (at your beginnings) that you were doing the brand photography and had clients! That seems so long ago...haha! I am very excited to see how this develops. (No pun intended!)
Hi I just discovered your channel and I enjoy your videos very much !! I remember visiting the archives twice during school, and now I'm majoring in literature without a real profesional objective. Thanks to you I'm going to try to do an internship in the archives during the new school year, though I'm not sure it's the right path to get into this career (i'm from France) but I think it would match my personality a lot 😁
So happy for you. The shots turned out beautiful. I have a somewhat similar journey with writing. I didn’t do it as a business, but I enjoyed writing a lot when I was younger, I even did short stories, my cousins enjoyed reading them. However somewhere along the lines, with internet coming along and everything, I got distracted with so many other things stimuli and put it aside. Now it feels too difficult to pick back up - even journaling is something I haven’t been able to integrate into my routine because I just end up watching videos on youtube or gaming instead. Recently found out I enjoy coloring too. I just feel like I have this creative vein that is a diamond in the rough and I’m not sure how to explore it, and your video gave me inspiration for that. Also those beautiful nature places!! Made me want to go dip my feet in a creek. On another subject, as someone who recently got diagnosed with a type of ‘neurodivergency’ I would love to hear you talk about that in a different video. Thank you if you read this long comment (i can never summarise anything lol
This was beautiful to watch, Sheila! Thank you for taking us along! There is nothing more gratifying than being a creative and planning through projects and really being in our creative element. It’s so fulfilling! The photos came out stunning. I would absolutely love to purchase the postcard prints! 🫶🏼☺️
congrats, Sheila, on all of this! it's so inspiring to see you dive into your art and it makes me want to continue my photography as well. so happy for you!!
So exciting! Thanks for sharing this! ❤ diving into art we are passionate about is always so rewarding and healing for our minds! I’m so glad you got to be a part of that! Looking forward to what else u choose to do in the future. 😊
You are a HUGE inspiration to me!! Thank you so much for making these videos/vlogs about your job as an Archivist! (I'm deciding on a career, you've helped me immensely)
I have such similar feelings around writing! I avoid it at all costs especially after online entrepreneur burnout where you’re expected to send a million emails and post a million posts lol. BUT I’m itching to write a children’s book 😏 totally inspired by you exploring other art forms!
I can tell you have such supportive and caring people in your life and it’s a testament of your heart. You deserve all this joy Sheila! So so happy for you and your return to art 💖
Great video, it's very interesting to see the whole process behind the scenes. The nature places you were at are beautiful! I guess that's what is meant by 'refilling the creative well'...or something like that 😊
Awesome work, great job Sheila! This is inspiring, i wish we live closer, i would be able to support your work in person ...! Love to see more these themes in your next vlogs ... Good luck girl!
Feels so good to finally get this video up! I’ll be sharing my photography this week on my community tab and over on Instagram. You can follow me on IG here: instagram.com/insearchofsheila/
Thank you for your video, I am studying at TAFE NSW in Certificate 4 Library and Information Services and I want to specialize in archives as I love history and also am curious to see what archivists do on a daily basis. Thank you for your expertise and advice
that's a big question! haha I recommend getting some experience to see if it's something you'd like to pursue more long-term. Many archives and historical societies rely on volunteers so you could try reaching out to a local institution and seeing if you could volunteer there. From the education end of things you can enroll in a college degree program (most employers look for a Master's degree in history or library science) or you can get a certificate from the Society of American Archivists (just to name one certificate program I'm aware of.)
We may need to transcribe documents for a researcher, but that's more of a once-off thing rather than a long-term project. We do have some small transcription projects going on with volunteers.
@@SheilaJoy That’s so cool! If I’m understanding correctly then, you and others that do what you do, are the “starting point” for the materials when they are archived?
hi sheila! just discovered your youtube channel and its so refreshing for me as a fellow archivist, most of the time i feel its a lonely job, plus i living in a third world country make it much worse lol. thanks for making this video 🙌
Thanks for great inspiration for a long creative summer. I will be focusing on setting up my studio for my sister and I to sew, embroider, create quilts, beadwork and rematting finds from the thrift store. I am also trying new recipies to help with my Hashimoto's and inflammation. Looking forward for time to linger!
Lovely video! Great idea about summer intentions and being creative! I recently saw a video by Kate Cavanaugh Writes called Summer Writing Semester, where she created courses for herself. While, I am not a writer I like that idea. For example, maybe using hobbies like exercise , crochet, language learning, spending time in nature, and baking. What brand of computer and television do you have? Researching some options, Thanks!
oh wow! the course making thing sounds like a great idea. I'm not much of a writer either haha, but I love the idea of a hobby course. Could you share the specific video she talks about that? I tried looking but now sure if I missed it or something haha. I have a Macbook Air and our big TV is Hisense. The TV is actually George's that he's had for a number of years now haha.
Sheila! Thank you so much for sharing my book. Im also such a huge fan of the videos you share on here! They are a great comfort for me. Congrats on the art show! Can’t wait to see how that comes out, hopefully on a future vlog. 🫶🏼 I also love the ideal of a “creative girl summer.” I am going to lean into that this summer season! ☺️
Hi! I am starting my MLIS program in the fall-- and am curious about archival work. Do you have an MLIS or related degree? This video was super interesting! I am trying to find out as much information about different areas I could work with an MLIS before I take classes. I can only take a certain amount of classes so want to make sure I take the ones that I would actually be interested in. I will definitely make my way through more of your videos about archival work! Thank you
thanks for the questions! I have a Master's Degree in Applied History (also known as public history). I've learned all my archiving skills on the job and have only taken a few courses on archival theory. There are also a lot of free workshops/classes available online if you're not ready for a degree yet.
my blue one in this video was thrifted! although there's now a hole in it that I need to mend haha. I have some other long dresses from Old Navy too :) And my orange skirt is from Boscovs I think...I like finding deals at thrift stores and department stores hehe
Those taurus earth sign vibes are hitting hard. I feel them also. I need all the sunshine and outdoors I can get. I’ve had to put my feet in the dirt for grounding a lot this summer. It’s almost like catch up for seasonal affective and the gloom from winter.
