Sorry you lost me when you added butter to the Pan, dust a pan with a little flour when it turns brown pan is ready then cook your farls, I'm old we didn't waste our butter ☘️👍
Well champ and Colcanmon are both hot side dishes . Also the potato salad contains mayo which the others don't. And colcannon contains cabbage and not spring onions .
Great recipe - I didn't have soda or buttermilk but substituted 3x the amount of soda for baking powder, and a mix of yoghurt and milk for the buttermilk. Thank you!
Just made this, with some modifications. Cajun style Andouille sausage, 1 1/2 onions, half teaspoon of chili sauce with garlic, instead of carrots I used half a bag of coleslaw which has shredded carrots in it. Potatoes, bacon and a small cut up seared lambchop. Came out great and finished with strawberries & brown sugar for dessert.
I've recently been looking for a good recipe for this stew and yours is the first I've come across by an Irishman who clearly knows how to do it properly. I can now happily ignore all the ridiculous American recipes that flood RU-vid 😣👍
I'm from England but have many Irish relatives on my mum and dad's side. I was brought up on this dish and it's one of my favourite meals to eat, so easy to make and very tasty
It's my first time hearing of boxty, but they sure look tasty and I'll give the recipe a try. But being Canadian, I won't be able to resist giving them a drizzle of maple syrup on top.
Yes, I realize St. Boxty is probably spinning in his grave, but it all comes down to the versatility of the potato. I’ve tried boxty with a ladle of chili on top for that chili fries flavour, as well as with curds or melted cheese and gravy as a modified poutine dish. I’ve also wondered how boxty would taste with a mixture of melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon on top-maybe with a splash of rum, too-but I haven’t tried it yet. One thing I’ve learned not to do is leave a big bowl of raw boxty mix in the fridge overnight, otherwise it’ll look like asphalt in the morning. @@Lyran7
@HdHd-hp6qz In old school coddle they would never ever brownthem off but I sealed them . Also thats how a coddle looks , it's a no frills dish . A sausage doesent have to be brown to be cooked . It simply has to reach temperature.
Hi! Loved your video and we tried your recipe. First time the bacon seemed over cooked for us. I wonder if I have done something wrong. Can you confirm the slow cooker is on high the whole cooking time? I thought I heard you mention low at one point around the potato time?
@@TheIrishChefhi sorry more questions!! Again love this recipe and we have tried a lots of times. Watching again I want to confirm cook time. 3 min mark you say 6 hours, 1:11 min mark you show 5 hours. Also do we start on high and then switch to low? Or low the whole time?
As a wein in the 60's my Aunt Bella made soda farls over the open turf fire on a griddle....she'd dish them up with homemade butter and blueberry jam...bliss !!!
Im wondering how the grated raw potato cooks inside the patty with only a few minutes of heat per side. Is it supposed to remain rather raw and crunchy inside?
We are doing a cook a traditional meal from your family night in a few weeks. There will be Italians, Thai, Danes, Aussies, all cooking elaborate dishes from their home land and then there will be me with my Nana’s coddle 5 simple ingredients full of flavour and a winning dish 😋 (I’ll also do a Soda bread otherwise my Nan and Mammy would come back to haunt me 😂)
Mine has come out very runny both times I’ve tried. What am I doing wrong? Ivan left it for like 18 hours in the oven with a towel over it and the light on. Yours looks great!
Thank you for respecting the dishes best as you could. I suggest using the plate that's the way we normally do it a big plate or platter to put over the frying pan when you flip the egg also add the egg into the same pan do not remove the potatoes from the frying pan at all salty your onions and potatoes for 7 minutes with your salt or pepper. Then and use your olive oil just like you did. Okay so once that part is done just grab the eggs that you beat on the side with a salt and pepper just point directly over the onions and the potatoes. Use a platter to flip it and that's it. Herb's are not added on top. It could be eaten cold or hot as a side as an appetizer or as a main meal or typical Spaniard breakfast. Cook the potatoes less yours look kind of mush and they're supposed to be soft / cooked but firm. For this issue could also invest into a frying pan that has a top piece on it like it looks like an attachment like a second frying pan on top of that one. It's a double pan to use to cook this particular thing if you're going to be making it a lot. We typically eat this once to three times a week. You can eat this hot or cold as we do.
I've never in my life seen mashed potato in potato salad! And I've eaten a fair amount of Irish potato salad - especially with salad cream too. Strange recipe!!!! You've made champ!
@@jackiephillips4269 well let me tell you that mash potatoes are often used in potato salad here . Jesus nearly every supermarket sells a version of this !
@@jackiephillips4269 my mother made it with mash , her mother made it with mash . My mother in law made it with mash , both from opposite side of the country . I think I'd trust their traditional recipes rather than Google.
Sure, let's dismiss every other Irish mother who makes this!!! If people like cold mashed potato then that's great for you and your recipe. Not sure why you think being so dismissive of Irish people and your where the hell are you from attitude because no-one I know makes potato salad like you.
