Relaxing videos about hiking, wildlife, photography, camping, coping with a disability, the great outdoors and ultralight-ish gear!
In my videos, I walk, observe and chat. Elsewhere, I write. I used to be a full-time photographer. Boundless curiosity. Love wildlife. Avid outdoor gear user and experimenter. I have Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) but work around the obstacles it sends my way (there have been many!). I have an ongoing obsession with the Camino de Santiago & many things Spanish.
My videos… they started out as a form of 'notes to self' on the go! I like to capture the ambient sounds and atmosphere, so deliberately don't use much music. The videos aren't short, snappy and funky-they're not designed to raise your blood pressure-but instead, I take a little more time to show you places and the things I spot in them along the way.
At about 12:01 you mentioned the sign for a village, where they "crossed out" the letter "j" in Pereje. Actually, they didn't cross the letter out; rather, they changed it to an "x." Evidently in Galician the place is spelled Perexe, and they're quarreling over how to spell this place name in a part of western Castille-Leon where the local language seems to be Galician.
I have baby poo gold Berkies because of your suggestion and they have been wonderful - I had to hunt for them here in Australia and arrived in Portugal and found them everywhere and in better colours ! I too use them with merino socks - yes, I am at that age!
Thank you for this lovely comment 🙏. All of your others were flagged by RU-vid-I’ve no idea why!-and I’ve only just seen them. It’s lovely to see that you’ve enjoyed the videos!
Really enjoying your in depth videos, thank you. And thank you so much for not adding music (or if you have I haven't noticed it, so not intrusive!). So many people seem to feel obliged to have a soundtrack. Sometimes it's ok but often it is so intrusive I stop watching. I prefer just to listen to the sound of the camino, even if it is motor vehicles! The birdsong is great. I heard the skylarks. Beautiful. Couldn't tell if it was the ascending or descending song though (don't know the difference)! P.S. Just got to the bit of the skylark putting on a display. This could be a distraction technique they use. As they are ground nesting birds the eggs and chicks are very vulnerable so if an adult bird sees a human or animal close to the nest they put on a display some distance away to draw what they perceive as a threat away form the nest.
That’s good to hear, about the music. It is deliberate. It sets me up for difficult sound editing-I’ll be posting a video about that soon! Skylarks are fascinating birds, aren’t they? I enjoyed reading your comment about their behaviour!
In a previous video you mentioned that there was a pilgrim hostel to tend to those with ergot poisoning; FYI ergotrate was given to women after childbirth to contact the uterus to help expel the placenta. LSD is made using ergot, the mold from rye. The French Revolution was particularly crazy after the mob ate moldy rye bread. Joseph Smith, think Mormon, had his revelations after eating moldy rye. Lesson: don't eat moldy rye.
when I walked this route in October of '22 I only saw 1 person ahead of me, in the far distance, and one person on a bicycle passed me. The only thing to see is your soul.
I did the section you are on two years ago except in October and conversed with some "dry land" farmers that depend on seasonal rains to water the winter wheat fields and they had no rain. He was hanging his head stating that his winter wheat crop was not to be. A lot of farmers were in the same boat.
It’s worrying. This year, I only saw Galicia and it was wetter than usual for the summer. I’m not sure how that weather has affected farming there but it’s been bad for farmers in my part of England
I've been binging (watching all your vid in a row) and heard you talk about the PCT. The Camino de Santiago is a walk in the park next to the PCT. There are places that have a 45 degree descent followed in two to three days of a 45 degree ascent and if you don't have it (whatever "it" is) you ain't gonna get it and if you need rescue it will cost you a bunch of money..
a lot has changed in 15 years. When I walked the forested section, every 1/2 hour Guardia Civil on bicycles rode by and about 1/2 way us on the steep section there was a huge billboard saying, in 4 languages, "take no pictures, light no fires. We are watching you".
When I did my walk I stopped at this place to eat breakfast (the Pilgrim breakfast of stale bread and coffee just didn't get it done) and had 4 eggs, an entire plate of potatoes (French fries, of course), and an inch thick slice of ham. Great memories
Thanks for the time that took to show everything - very thorough. I stopped and paused the video, to go look the stuff up that you mentioned, when I liked something, so I could add it to my "might have to get this list", haha
I hope you find some things that work well for you! I received your comment just after bathing on the final stage before Santiago de Compostela (I’m on the France’s now). My towel would have been handy 😀 It was lovely to read your comment then
Can’t wait to watch this, I just imported 4 anthurium from them and received them this morning, searched for an unboxing so I know what to do with them. Wish I knew about the pop up in Cambridge as I live in East Anglia!
I’ll try! I don’t know much about European or Mediterranean plants except what plant ID apps tell me! And of course, the Deadly carrots along the Camino 😂 Thanks for suggesting this, it’s really good to know.
Hi Lindsey! Thanks for your response glad your OK. Yeah had a great walk in Sept of again soon start on my 70th b/d fingers crossed. Yeah be good to have you back posting Woody😀
I’m sorry I didn’t see this until now! It’s an arcteryx contenta dress but in the shift style which I think they’ve stopped making-I looked because I wanted another. It’s very light and comfortable
I’ve done this exact trail. You should of gone straight on past that barn. It takes you straight up into the hills. When you look back through the valley the view is amazing. I rotated around and ended up where you were you are in those boggy bits.
I’m sorry for this very late reply which I imagine isn’t much use now. I’m not sure which packs you meant but the larger waterproof ones are by Exped and the small packing ones are by Granite Gear, called Zipditty
I finished just ahead of you last year on July 2nd. It was my first camino, SJPP to Santiago, and I must say, I didn't like the last 5 days at all and neither did any of my Camino family. From Sarria onwards it was full of school kids and tourist pilgrims. The whole atmosphere of the Camino had changed overnight. Not my cup of tea at all. Cheers and thanks for the memories
you would have been awake all night in that wind, sometimes going to an area for a day walk first and noting the location of possible camping spots works well
I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to reply! Yes, we’ll be returning soon. I’ll post an update in the coming weeks. It’s been a turbulent year. It was lovely to see you’d enjoyed the videos! Thank you so much for commenting
Terry & Berni here off to the Camino Portuguese in May 2023. Porto to Santiago, then on to Finesterre . Enjoyed all the video's, thank you. So many familiar faces.
I’m sorry I missed this until now! I’m also glad you enjoyed the footage. Andrew and I enjoyed meeting you both. I’m wondering how your Camino Portugués went, and whether you’ll return to do another this year?
@@lindseyhollandwalks We walked one day on the coast and then the central route. We are off again May 8th 2024 Porto to Santiago coastal and spiritual variante route. Not long now. We are planning to walk from Le Puy to Conques in September.
UltralightOutdoorGear is my go to for a lot of those as well as many other items. It’s a great website because items can be sorted by weight. Some of my bags are also available on Amazon but I think you mean the Granite Gear ones.
I walked the Camino twice and recommend the following: *Waterproofing is best done by inserting a plastic bag such as a garbage bag inside the backpack and put the things that you want to keep dry inside that. *Lotions, potions, creams, toothpaste - you should not bring such huge quantities. These add a great deal of weight to your pack. Small travel size is good enough and simply replenish when you run out. Foot cream is important - I use petroleum jelly. *Electrolytes come from natural sources as well - such as bananas, nuts, dairy products, juices,... Carry some packets but just enough for a few days because they can be purchased all along the Way. *Rain gear - A poncho can be fine in light airs and they are excellent for warm weather as you are not encapsulated in a rain jacket, Goretex or not . However, they are pretty useless in heavy winds. Check the average temperature of the month that you plan on going. I walked at the tail end of March and all of April and had soft rain, driving rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow. *Sleeping bag: You could bring if you plan on sleeping in albergues but some have slept there and did not bring. A sleeping bag liner is fine for summer weather but not colder temperatures so check the weather of the locations that you plan on hiking to... Buen Camino.
Hi Lindsey, I’ve been watching all your Camino videos, taking notes of interesting sites and other information that you’ve shared, and I thank you for all of it. I wanted to tell you that I went on the Dirty Girl Gaiters site last night and found out that they are all on sale. I’d be very happy to send you a pair if you would pick out the design you like (I saw a Camino de Santiago design). We could arrange the details via email or text if you would like. I’d be happy to do this for you because your videos have been a great help to me for planning my Camino in April. Let me know. DD
I’m so sorry I didn’t pick up this lovely comment until now! It was so kind of you too. It’s been a turbulent year here-I’ll post an update soon. If you pick this up, could you email me at lindsey@lindseyholland.co.uk? I’m so glad you enjoyed the videos!
I know that particular area by heart, all around it for miles and miles. I fellrun in those places a lot. I wish I was there to show you where to wild camp.
Lindsey, I watch all of your Camino videos and they are excellent. Gracias. Mi esposo y yo vamos a caminar El Camino Frances en Mayo. Tus vídeos me han dado mucha información.
Greetings from where I work in AddisAbaba. I am a South African, preparing / researching to do my 1st Camino in September this year. 2023. Thank you for all the shared wisdom.
Hi, nice videos. I think the crop is called Retama, not sure of spelling and it is used for various chemicals for pharmaceuticals, thanks again I hope to be on this leg in a month
High Lindsey! great vid I remembered watching this a while ago and I have been looking for a new really light pack as now i have a shoulder issue (old age ha!ha!) and i walk Frances in early May! Lots of great reviews of the G 4-20 but I cant find the answer to this question can you help " can you take it as carry on in the airplane " I did try searching for you by username but drew a blank on the Forum! Hope you are OK and well; I also hope the answer to it being carry on is a yes All the best Woody (don't know why there is 58 added to my username)
Did you ever find out if it can be used as a carry-on? This is the first I've heard of this brand of backpack. Let me know how it worked for you. Thank you
@@Chellebeller Hi! Postponed May start(leg infection) leave now on 7th September;but i carry two cabin bags one is under seat bag when flying. This time it's Ryanair (40 x 20x25cm i use a gossamer gear Sil nylon day pack 70 grams packs to size of an egg. In that go spare clothes, electronics, meds and any thing else that will fit within their limits) The other is the G4-20 at 42 litres and 725 grams it is super squishy! (55x40x20 cm is the large bag limit) both bags are synched down and each has two additional nylon luggage straps i cut to fit they look like this +on the bag one vertically one round the middle; both bags especially the G4-20 are a couple of cm within the limits. If your walking Camino you shouldn't have that much my gear all up is 4.8 kg without water just over 10lbs. Hope this helps Woody
I’m so sorry I’ve been so slow to pick up on this conversation! The answer is yes, I’ve taken it on planes many times and have even managed to ram it under the seat in front when not over-full. Woody, I’m particularly sorry I didn’t spot that you’d commented here, and also that you had to postpone. I hope you had a wonderful time in September. I’ll get myself onto the forum soon, and will also post an update or two here. It’s been a turbulent year. Sorry again, and thanks so much for commenting 🙏
Entre Triacastela y Sarria se recorre una de las partes más hermosas del Camino. También el interior del país gallego muestra la belleza de Galicia. Gracias Lindsey Holland por mostrarnos vuestra aventura del Camino de Santiago.
