Hi, I'm Lo! I'm a knit and crochet Pattern Designer (English Style). I share how-to videos on common and challenging knitting and crocheting techniques, to support those making my patterns. You can find my collection at lo-rain.com, and in Lionbrand Kits.
This is why I like you too and why I tell everyone who asks me how I got so good at knitting to look on RU-vid. This is an insanely complicated cast on and yet I'm pretty sure I can do it now because I've seen it done
Thank you for your tutorial, I’ve really been struggling with switching the stitches around to convert it to the 2x2 rib, and I’ve tried a number of different approaches, and after watching this, it has finally clicked 💙
I have a question about this. If you know you’re going to be doing the ribbing 2x2, why can’t you do your cable cast-on in a 2x2 fashion instead of 1x1, so you wouldn’t have all that fuss of a set-up row?
@@mikkiwachtel2870 I have tried to cast on 2 knits and 2 purls using this technique and the cast on edge has an odd twist to it. I prefer casting on and swapping the stitches which gives a much nicer cast on edge. I would love to hear if you know of a technique that casts on in 2 x 2 rib.
I know this isn’t entirely relevant to this video. But I love your channel and figured it was worth a shot to see if you could answer a question I had about Italian bind offs for a neckline? I’ve been searching endlessly for information on this, but I’m wondering if there’s any way to do an Italian bind off for knit 1, purl 2 ribbing?
Can this stitch be done in the round, an if so, what differences need to occur in the instructions to allow the offset of the openings fr. Om row to row?
Thank you, I'd figured out how to do it from the back side but in some ways this is easier even if It is doing purls. I don't know why but I keep dropping those purls somewhere, I think on the back side, and this is just what I was looking for!
Thank you! I did this years ago, and didn't remember what it was called or how to do it specifically. When replacing other cast on methods you cast on half the number of total stitches don't you?
A pattern for a hat that I'm making that uses this cast on says to avoid joining in the round while you create the provisional cast on and do those setup rows where you knit one and slip one. Then, after the row where you rearrange for 2x2 ribbing so when you move the purl stitches around after that row you should join in the round
Just want to let you know, I love this cast on. I think it is beautiful and I like having a choice besides ribbing. I’m looking forward to working this sweater pattern. Will be starting soon.
Thank you for the visual. I'm picking up a project where I started doing the ribbing your old way, and for continuity I figured I better keep doing it. Thank you for the video 😊
Hi Lo! I’ve just discovered your videos and I would love to incorporate this stitch into one of my projects. I was wondering how/if this could translate into knitting in the round while keeping the holes offset? Would it work if I alternated rows starting K2 with rows starting K1? Thanks for your help!
Hi and thanks for reaching out. I had testers ask this very question and after a few attempts they all decided to work flat. The reason I have the K2 and K1 at the beginning and end of rows is 1-for seaming purposes and 2 - to off set the holes. So if you’re not seaming .. remove a knit 1 from each end of row and work a knit 1 only at the beginning of round to offset the holes. Also note that the row 1 has k2togtbl as part of the stitch. Row 2 wrong side row has purl 2tog. You wouldn’t be doing this row in the round so your fabric will look different. I have not attempted this myself because I feel seams are a crucial part of a garments structure and I prefer the drape of a garment knit flat versus in the round. Good luck!
Thank you for this video! I had a different voice in mind, I had a neighbour from Germany and she looks a bit after you, but she smoked and had a similar voice (smoked) what a relive to hear yours!😊 and now I pick up my needles and try this cast-on...
I'm looking for help on correcting a mistake row (eg if I did row 2 twice in a row, or row 3) --- when I frog down and take out the mistake row, I can't figure out how to start knitting again in pattern. I get a weird gap no matter
First off are you working the half fishermans rib the same way I am. Right side (K1B, P1.) Wrong Side (K all sts). If you need to frog an entire row, or by the sound of it several rows.... I would suggest frogging back to a knit row. The way I do it is.. (I don't use life lines). with the wrong side facing you and starting at the left edge, gently insert the needle through all of your stitches one at a time, being careful more stitches don't unravel from the row below... however if one does unravel place both loops on your needle and you can fix that later by following the video. As you can tell it is really hard explain to someone how to fix something without actually seeing the issue. If you haven't knit to far into the project there is always the option of starting over or inserting a life line in a row below. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Actually you are picking up the back leg of the V, but also the corresponding stitch below/behind that one. Which I show in the first few steps of the video.
This is a good tutorial! I was looking for something like this for a long time. I understand how that seam gives structure, but I don’t understand how it prevents a garment from stretching. How does that work?
Once the item is blocked then you seam. Cotton yarn has no memory so it will stretch a lot. Having seams in a garment it helps to minimized the stretch. Which I thought was crucial in these pants because of the weight of them. Seams relieve the stress / pulling of the fabric.
Hey Lo Rain! I just ordered this kit through Lion Brand and am thrilled for this tutorial! It was clear and concise and I feel confident that I will have a beautiful top at the end of it all. Thank you for sharing this; it's appreciated! Take care!
Am learning to knit a sweater l like the way you demonstrated the neck finishing l have knitted cardigans mostly n now l need to learn v necks n round neck cardigans if possible please post a v neck finishing n round neck for cardigan l would really appreciate it thanks
Thanks for showing this. I've seen the purl stitch used in sweaters for a faux seam but never seen it actually sewn as an actual seam. This appears to me to be a superior approach. Thanks again.
