Nice to see Kiki! I was naming a lot of the places you showed even before you said the name. I never did make it to Florida and if I ever got a chance, I would love to see the natural environment. I never made it to Maine, either. I would want to go hiking there, and also the Great Smokeys, which I have visited, but lacked time. Bits of Yellowstone are in Montana to the north and Idaho to the east. Very worthwhile. I was brought up in Utah. More than the Grand Canyon even, what I would recommend is Moab, and go see Island in the Sky and Arches. Shinobu and I had land there until it became clear that he would not be able to get health insurance under reasonable conditions, and it would bankrupt us. If you make it to the Grand Canyon, Moab would be a major side trip, but it is the first place I get back to whenever I visit the States. I recommend taking time and seeing all of southeastern Utah, the whole stretch across the Colorado Plateau from Moab to Cedar City. There are high mountains that are nice in summer, too. It can get really cold in winter, but the days are generally pleasant. I suspect my overseas travel days are through, though, as it seems to require a smartphone anymore, but the west coast of Australia from Geraldton to Exmouth, and especially Shark Bay is unparalleled. Bali is fantastic for the culture--music and dancing, in particular. My solo drive up to Yellowknife in northern Canada about 30 years ago was also particularly memorable, and the stretch from Banff to Jasper is also really worthwhile. My bucket list contains various mountain peaks in Japan and visiting Hokkaido and the southern Ryukyus again. Which reminds me: in your novel The Charlatan's Son (which I enjoyed immensely), the Voodoo shamaness was named "Satsuma," and I wonder how you came up with that, because that 's the old name of the province at the south end of Kyushu, now Kagoshima Prefecture.

Funny story about "Satsuma Creole." While writing that book, we were traveling on an interstate, amused by odd names on the road signs. She said, "You need character names. Here they are." There was a road sign reading "Jemison Thorsby." Further down the interstate was a road sign for the small town of Satsuma. Voila! Marina took a tablet and began writing the scene of Marshall's encounter with "Satsuma Creole." When we got home, I typed the scene almost wrd for word. It's my favorite scene in the book. Actually toying with a sequel to that book. I wrote about three chapers last year, then set it aside.

In my mid-40s, I bucked up my will power and took the dietary advice my diabetic husband's nutritionist gave him--despite knowing that I did better with a low-carb approach--and succeeded in losing weight. I was vary proud of that achievement, but people who knew me asked if I was okay. It was not a healthy weight loss. Ultimately, it appeared I managed only to lose muscle mass, despite continued exercise. Still, I persisted. But at about the six-month point, I became completely unable to lose weight, no matter how I deprived myself. My belly began expanding , like a starving child's. So that's how that experiment ends, if you pursue it doggedly. (Honestly, where did they get these terrible ideas for diabetics? You know, their patients try and try, and when they inevitably fail, it's their fault, and they subsequently wind up on dialysis--which is profitable to the hospital.) I control my carb consumption (certain amount inevitable due to social concerns), focus on good fats and eat a decent amount of meat at noon.

Tim, I personally have found that there are certain foods I incorporate into my diet that help with other medical issues. Everyday I eat bacon and eggs for breakfast. I have burger patties or chicken wings or similar for lunch. I have fish or steak or similar for dinner, if hungry, and I switch it up. Every other day though, I have some red grapefruit for a snack, since that helps me with my sinus, which is bad at times. Doctors tell me there is nothing they can do for me, and to just take over the counter stuff. I have tried everything on the planet I know of, nothing works. However, the grapefruit really seems to help. Not grapefruit juice, either. The actual fruit. A couple times a week, I may have broccoli or asparagus with my steak. I fry the asparagus in bacon fat with a little garlic and chopped onion. Delicious. Most of the time, it’s just meat and eggs, though. Question: my body really likes tuna. Is tunafish ok once in a while? I would assume the oil packed kind. I’m not talking fresh tuna steak. I know that’s ok. Also wondering if you take electrolytes? Dr. Berry talks about that. Thanks for the info and I will say I haven’t had any grains since you started this channel. Don’t miss that, either. They were hard on my gut. I feel a lot better.

When I was a kid, the next-door-neighbor girl knew a telephone number you could call to reach a guy with a voice like a frog. (Poor guy--but he always answered anyway.) The phone book had "Bullfrog Marina" in it, and I knew what it was, but I pranked the neighbor girl into thinking it was a person--Marina Bullfrog--and she gave them a call. It being evening, no one answered. Nice to see Marina and the marina! For a few years, we had a gaggle of Canada geese wintering out by Mount Fuji. They must have come down along the Aleutians. After a few years, I guess they decided to go somewhere else on vacation.

I have been watching the videos you suggested I see. The doctor, and the old man, Mitch. I love Mitch! He's great! Between you and these people, I have learned a great deal. However, while working and being gone for 10 hours a day, I find it difficult to "cook" during the day. So what I do, is the night before I make burger patties to eat for lunch. Then, I make scrambled eggs to eat for breakfast with bacon, of course. I bring this to work. I'm trying to drink more water. I am finding my cravings for sugar are not as strong as they were, but still there....for now. Dr. Berry says if you have gut issues (like I do), this diet will help that. I hope so. No issues yet. I gave my liberal brother all my rice and bread! Lol! I am liking this so far. Still drink alcohol (fireball is pretty sweet), but in moderation. I thought getting rid of potatoes was going to be a problem, but not so far. I still like veggies, but try to avoid them. I take vitamin C and D, also. Thank you for this valuable information!!! ✌️❤️

Sounds good! Dr. Berry was very helpful when I started last year. He has a video on pretty much any topic there is, I believe, and his live Monday night shows are great. He takes questions. Mitch is terrific for many things, and he also demonstrates great recipes. He's really turned me on to sous vide cooking. I've really grown to love mineral spring water. Besides coffee, it's all I drink. The longer I'm carnivore, the less cravings I seem to have, not only for junk, but even for things like cheese. It's not a "sin" to have it....some carnivores eat it, some don't. I think booze is frowned on, although Marina still imbibes. So, hey....🙂 And it is unreal what a "drug" sugar really is. And it's everywhere! Keep on truckin!

Tim, I also am a sugar addict. Hard core, too. If I don’t have sugar within 5 hours of waking up, I feel weak and shaky. For real. I’ve actually had friends hand me a candy bar when that happens. I have a real fear of giving up sugar. Well, I didn’t see this video right away because I am battling a bad case of bronchitis. I am on meds and an inhaler. I am slowly getting better, but I have noticed my appetite has really diminished as well. I am craving water over soda, and really don’t want the sugar right now. After seeing this, it gives me the motivation to keep going in that direction. After not eating for almost 2 days, I had some scrambled eggs and sausage, and slept all night! Felt better the next morning, too. I had some gut issues a while back, and doctors told me to eat whole grain foods! I got worse, of course. So, I did some investigating and found I’m not suppose to eat that, it causes leaky gut! I stopped, changed my diet up, and my gut issues are better. Now, to work on that sugar addiction……

Sorry you've not been feeling well, Tracy. Yeah, it's almost scandalous how ill-informed most GPs seem to be about nutrition. Thankfully, we have excellent alternatives on places like YT, with the Dr. Berrys, Anthony Chaffees, Sean Bakers, and more. I can relate to the sugar addiction. If you decide to go carnivore, the good news is these cravings do wane in time. That's been my experience, anyway, and that of a lot of other carnivores I watch on YT. One real challenge for we carnivores is finding a carnivore-friendly physician in your local area, something I've yet to do. I see my primary tomorrow for the old annual physical. I'm ready for him to tell me about the perils of not eating what we know to be junk. But I'm ready for him. ;-)

I must have been five, as I recall, when my father told my mother that she was using sweets as a reward for good behavior in me, and it was not okay, and she kind of half-denied it. But I already knew good and well that sweets were the only reward likely to motivate me. There was no word for "addiction" back then, but I knew in my heart that I had one. So did Mom, too, obviously. As you note, however, all of the dietary advice revolved around avoiding fats. And if sugar was making up plenty of your calories, at least you were getting closer to the ideal low-fat diet. We just tried not to "overdo" the sugar, and most people failed. We had sweets for breakfast, desserts after lunch and dinner and chocolate milk before bed at my house. I became aware that carbs were not the dietary heroes we'd been led to believe about 30 years ago, and Heller & Heller brought out the "reward meal" concept. As a first step toward dealing with the addiction, it was very helpful. Though my husband noted I would binge on sweets for that one hour a day, I was clearly eating less, because sweet gifts from students were stacking up and I was finding other recipients for them. I began eating veggies for real instead of a bit with the starchy foods. That ultimately led to an oxalate overload, that may have started in childhood from my mother's well-intentioned efforts. But still, it was an improvement in the short term. Completely agreed on the western medical system! I'm very reluctant to visit the doctor in Japan because I'll wind up confronting them over the drugs they push. It's just as bad here, and in some ways worse than in America. Completely eliminating gluten was the most effective step I've taken, though very unpopular here in Japan. I did one cheat day on that (birthday) and was sick for two weeks afterward, and once ate a bowl of noodles to be polite and gained 20 pounds in water that took about three weeks to come off. That got rid of 95% of the sugar in my diet, and I have not felt a strong need (especially in light of the need for politeness) to get rid of the rest. I applaud your efforts.

I feel ya. I'll be doing a video soon about being an addict, which I am. Sugar is extremely addictive. Since milk has sugar, I avoid it, but I don't know whether that's the case for all carnivores. I do know Dr. Ken Berry frowns on it. (I highly recommend his channel.) I don't believe there's a prohibition on cheese, and while I love it, I gave it up a couple of months ago and haven't missed it at all. As far as salad goes, all vegetables have carbs, and carnivores avoid them. (Some folks go keto, including Marina, but they limit their carbs / veggies to around 50 per day. I find it far easier just to eliminate them. I don't want to count anything.) The first week or so on Carnivore can be a tough adjustment for some, but after that, I believe most folks have little trouble, once we become “fat adapted.” Remember, fat is our friend! I haven't weighed myself in years. Part of that was simple frustration, because after a six-month successful deprivation diet (based on what the doctor had prescribed for my diabetic husband), nothing at all would work, not even outright fasting, and the weight slowly came back. Now I am still not weighing myself, but my looks are improved. I'm on a fairly low-oxalate diet. Carnivore is the ultimate low-oxalate diet. I share your addiction to sugar. I think most women do, even here in Japan, and they didn't used to when I first arrived about 40 years ago. It's a real addiction. Best approach is strict avoidance, but I don't do that. What I am doing now seems to be enough. If you have spent much time on vegan or gluten-free (me) or drinking lots of green smoothies because it's supposed to be healthy, you might have oxalate overload. My electrosensitivity seems to have been partially caused by that. That is, I am aware of biological effects of radiowaves and so on because my nerves are affected (all loaded up with crystals). If you have oxalate overload, then you have to wean yourself off veggies and be on the lookout for severe oxalate clearing symptoms. See Sally K. Norton for more on that. I wish you the best luck with this!
