I started listening to your music in middle school, and I return to hear this as a college student. Your music really helped me back then, as a newly out queer in a community of homophobia. You were one of the artists I looked up to so I could convince myself I had a life worth continuing, and now I’m glad I made it so far. My life has gotten so much better, I’ve found my people, and they’re so supportive and loving. Thank you for being my anchor when I needed it most 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

“Forced to fit into a box when that box ain’t built to fit me” is how I constantly felt growing up as a non binary lesbian. People seemed to think that if they bought me dresses I would magically wake up one day and like to wear dresses(never happened) Great song!!
Really enjoyed this! Although titled ‘heteronormativity’ it’s amazing how much of the points made here are also because of amatonormativity and cisnormativity. It’s almost like there are many ways to be a person - who would’ve guessed? I related a lot as a genderqueer person to what you were saying about forcing men and women into very distinct boxes. Also the visuals! The vapour wave style isn’t one I usually like but you did a fantastic job with this song - it really fit. The constant merging and contrast of pink and blue emphasised the points made. Well done!
Huh… I listen to this as we prepare for my sisters wedding. I’m happy for her, but I was taken off guard by how dysphoric it all feels, small things you never think about can be so gender coded in a really binary way. I’m starting to think I don’t like weddings. They make me feel like an outsider. ❤🎉🥲 I’ll enjoy it as best I can though
Firstly, I'm still loving the Aesthetic of Tales of Queer Suburbia, the vapourwave/neon retro is a great reflection of the music but still modern and fresh. It's like the cartoon style of Not Thinking Straight - one that just takes you through the songs perfectly. I know you were a bit unsure about taking over the graphics but it was a great choice. As for the song, it's one that speaks about issues that stretch beyond queer culture. Camp straight guys, Aromantic f-buddies, Poly groups and more. The last 20 years has seen an explosion in the old LGB community, turning it into an explosion of colour, thought, emotion and resistance. You've created yet another anthem for today's LGBTQ+ community and I'm looking forward to seeing you in queer museums of the future alongside folk like Tom Robinson, Chumbawamba, KD Lang, Sandra Bernhardt, Pet Shop Boys, Divine, George Michael etc... 👏🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️✊

@@mattfishel I'm glad you feel the same about them. To a teen gay from a little village in the late 80s/early 90s they were inspirational, reassuring, and a big affirmation that we're not alone. I honestly think that you're already that for a whole new generation and - even though there's less stigma - intolerance is still out there. And with bangers like Radio Friendly Pop Song, LGBTQIA (hey hey), Bored of Straight Boys and the like, you're covering gay life pretty well. (Tl;Dr because I wouldn't blame you for skipping - you're bloody awesome! 😁)
I remember being barely 12 and thinking "school, marriage, children, work, death" was the only way life could've went. But then, BAM! Here come two guys kissing each other for a joke in a movie and the "Wait a minute- THAT'S AN OPTION?". My closed mindset opened up slowly to different things nobody ever presented to me: LGBT, queers, gender, feminism, activism, the climate change, pro-choice debates, autism, the possibility of not having children by one's choice, even! It was all so far away from my reality, I couldn't wrap my mind around how many different options there were for being a person and living a life. It was amazing to learn and get myself out of the box!
Hey everyone! Here's the 4th single from "Tales of Queer Suburbia". I hope the song speaks for itself, but for those of you interested in the background… ...I wrote it in 2021 during a difficult period in my life, about the times where I’ve felt isolated by others, or found myself questioning my place in society. LGBTQ+ rights have thankfully improved for the better in my home country in the last 20 years, and with all this great progress comes the ability to make many life choices that were previously unavailable to gay people like me (marriage, weddings, kids etc). This is obviously amazing and I wouldn't want it any other way! However, it can sometimes feel like there's pressure to assimilate and adopt certain heteronormative traditions and behaviours, or to conform to binary ideals or societal roles - roles which can feel right for some people, but not so much for others. I've often found myself questioning which path is truly right for me, and seeking out alternative routes and role models. (I still haven't fully worked it out yet!) So I tried to distill these complex and messy emotions into a song which I hope resonates with anyone out there who has felt ‘othered’ in any way. (And before anyone misinterprets what I'm saying in the lyrics... don't worry! As I sing in 'Bored of Straight Boys', "some of my closest friends are straight!" 😜) Enjoy! Matt x
