My 2 sons and I went to AF harbor last year on 4/31 and they were rolling. We just checked today to see if there is any action yet, nope. Love your setup and gear you are a carp slaying beast! Maybe we will try heading towards the Provo harbor this year, looks like some good shallows!
Yea provo bay is where I go for early season. Water gets warmer faster there since it's so shallow. Yesterday (4/23) we found some active ones there, but not quite full spawn yet.
I've shot a ton of carp out there. There is a few golden honey holes most don't know about on utah lake when the water goes up another 5 or 6 degrees in temperature it gets wild. Put piles of carm on the bank in just a couple hours. I shot a 54lb carp the same year I got 3 white bass in one shot.. good times!
You can kill carp with a baseball bat, or a machete here in Utah and no one will care, legal or not. They're an invasive species that's destroying the ecosystem and we are desperately trying to eradicate them.
Yea. First and foremost always cut the fish's air bladder and put them back in the water if you don't plan to keep them. Doing otherwise is degenerate behavior. As for where/when to find them: During spring/early summer you want sunny warm days with very little wind and shallow water (like <2ft). Later in the year I find them in clumps in the open water which requires a boat. Utah needs to team up with a Bowfishing Club to give resources to bow fishermen. I know a lot of guys who want to bowfish Carp out of Utah lake but don't know what to do with them. Utah should have a weekend once a month where they bring out a trailer that people can throw carp into. You could make Utah lake super popular for bowfishing
Yea, I just cut their air bladder and put them back in the water. I think the reality is that even if it were promoted more, we can't put much of a dent in the numbers. Seems like a bit of a lost cause, though I like to think we are helping a little.
@@Deserthoundreapers This was on the south side of provo bay. I went to a pretty close location yesterday and found some, but not quite this crazy. Go before noon.
Move slowly haha. The murky water actually seems to help a bit. As for aiming, when they are that close you barely need to aim, but I have a single pin on mine that I use as a rough sight.
It's pretty disappointing how limited the access is. Utah could do a lot better with public water access laws. This is the site I used to find utah lake access locations, though nowadays I usually take my boat and leave the walk-in places to people that don't have that option. utahlake.org/access-points/
I have a big carabiner attached to a loop of nylon webbing that I put over my shoulder. You can see it better in some of my other videos. I clip the carabiner to the bowstring and buss cable near where the cable rod is. I have noticed that my bowstring frays a bit faster there, but I've got spares =).
Yes, it is legal. Cut the air bladder and leave them in the water (not on the bank as they will stink and it's considered poor form). I spoke with a DWR warden after a day out there and told him I was just cutting them and throwing them back and he just said "Alright, just doin your part then, huh?"
