Hi Folks! Pennie & Ben here, we grow and sell Pecans, Organic Vegetables, Fruit and Eggs from our pastures hens on our small farm. We do a lot of DYI projects and experiments in the garden while leaning to homestead and about permaculture techniques along the way!
In February 2022 we left the city after 28 years in Phoenix, AZ in hopes of someday working the land for a living. I was a fitness trainer/nutrition coach of 20+ yrs. and Ben, an eye surgeon tech. We purchased this 4 Acres property from the original owners who cultivated the trees & land for 20+yrs into his 80s until he passed in 2020. A Pecan grove of 56 mature trees, grape vines and various fruit trees; pomegranates, apple, peach, plum and pear with space to grow organic vegetables for market. We work full-time jobs, while trying to get the farm operations off the ground. Follow along as we begin learning to farm the land and the ups and downs that come along with it! “Life is short, Live it well” ❤️God Bless
I always love finding a fellow gardener in my area. I'm in Chandler. I would love to have more land for our garden. I try to cram as much as possible into our yard and I think I do okay. I'm hoping to have a fantastic squash year. The squash bugs are definitely a challenge as it heats up. Happy planting!
when you covered the carrots you said never use black plastic, I'm assuming that is because it is too warm? could i use white side of silage tarp up and black side down? Thanks :)
Heck yeah 👍🏼 that’s perfect! I have silage tarps they are just too big for my beds or I would have used it here. I’m going to cut an end off of one the length of my bigger beds to use for this purpose.
You’re welcome! It takes a bit to get use to getting them going but they are worth the trials and wait. You just get better at growing them with time :)
We do know our varieties, unfortunately the original owner passed before we bought the property and we were not given a list. We know there are some Elliot’s and Berkets and Pawnee but other than that out of the 8 kinds we have growing well don’t know.
The trees go dormant around here beginning in fall so the leaves all fall off around that time and we compost some of them and mulch some using the riding lawn mower with the mulching setting. So they are all pretty much gone by the time the shaker comes out
I’m walking the same path. I’m finding out it’s a labor intensive business. If I calculate my profit per hour, I’d probably burn the orchard down. It’s a true labor of love. 😂
Love your videos! Thought you might like this method where he pretty much molds the soil around the 2” block. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WGijPHutr70.htmlsi=EA8OYAk4fB0YLiVa
We just bought 20 acres and have counted about 30 pecan trees so far. The property has not been worked for many years now so we have a lot of cleanup work first. How many trees did you complete on the first day and was it just three people harvesting?
Congratulations on the property and Pecan trees! Sounds like a great location! It will probably depend on how mature (or big) your trees. With our family helping there were often times 4-5 of us working to get all the pecans off the ground into bins once the big shaker came out, we were able to get through about 6-8 a day. Before the shaker came, Ben and I worked together to manually harvest some smaller to mid-size trees with long poles by knocking the pecans off onto tarps and putting in totes, we would get about 3 trees done a day doing it that way but again it probably depends on how much the trees produced and how big they are :) I hope it goes well for you guys, what a fun new endeavor. Let us know how it’s going and if you have any other questions. Blessings 💚
That is such great news, so glad you had a good harvest! I love walnuts as well, I’m glad you like the videos :) I will keep working on making them more often
Hello! Thanks for following along we will follow your journy as well! Wow, sounds like a great farm, we are only 4 acres and around 60 trees, super small but growing :)
I hear you! I put everything I plant on an extra large calendar but this just works so well for that quick glance or as a visual when contemplating plans. Happy to hear you find it useful :)
Hi there in Algeria! That is wonderful :) Pecans are such beautiful trees and then they give fruit after all that beauty they give. You can’t go wrong growing them! Thanks for watching and commenting it’s so great to hear from people in other parts of world ☺️
Sounds like a beautiful property ! I almost moved to North Carolina some years back. Thanks for following along and if you have any questions we can maybe help to answer just let us know :)
It is so nice to hear someone who appreciates pecans as much as I do. Absolutely love seeing the small pecans!! I'm in Oklahoma and have 14 younger trees. All less than 20 years. Already thinking on how to deter those pesky squirrels.
Oh wow...very nice you have so many, how fun! That’s great you love them too! They are very special trees indeed 🥰 thanks for sharing and yes we have those little rascals, pecan thieves ugh
@@coppertreeacres thank you. My wife and I are looking at a pecan farm for sale here in SC. Good to see someone else who dreamed the impossible dream…but y’all made it happen!
@@sirrabo8804 oh that’s great to hear! It’s been a journey for sure, lots of hard work even on this small of a farm but it’s all worth it. We are still setting up systems and adding the organic vegetable farming so we will see how it all goes. I sure hope you guys get the farm of your dreams, keep in touch and let us know how it’s going :)
Thank you for posting , there is a lot of information, this gentleman is a tree doctor, he knows a lot, I need to watch it several times to learn and take notes.
Hi Lucille, You’re welcome! He is truly such a wealth of knowledge! I’m glad you got a lot out of it! Be sure to subscribe to his new RU-vid channel “Earth’s Original Organics” he will be posting a lot of good stuff there :)
Is it normal to have that much wind for 2 months? Where on the planet are you? You guys are doing an amazing job! I hope your crops are bountiful and beautiful!
Thanks so much for the vote of confidence, we surely need it! No, this is not normal to have this much for this long. It’s usually really windy through March and then some windy days here and there in April and May but nothing like what we’ve been having 😒 Praying it clears up soon 👍🏻
I have subscribed to the channel. Although I am an English walnut grower I find pecan trees fascinating. Ty for harvester testing, thinking of buying the English walnut version for my self. I hope you will present a pecan pruning video some day.
Thanks so much, that’s great you grow walnuts! I’m glad you found the information useful 👍🏻 we have been pruning the trees recently for the first time since moving here a year ago, they had been neglected for a long time and we have been learning how to slowly start cleaning them up. We will be putting a video out on that soon. Thanks for watching
What if you glue a two inch styro-foam block into the bottom of your form, when you pack it and then decant it, from the form - your two inch void will already be there.
Hi Nick, sorry it was too long for ya, just showing process for those who want to see what we use to make up this type of blocking mix. You can skip all that and see the blocking part. I will work in making some shorter versions of things in the future. Thanks for the comment, have a good one 👍🏻
Why not just add a 2" piece of wood to the bottom of the pot, then fill and compress the soil. When you turn out the soil block from the pot just pull out the piece of wood. Much easier than destroying your block by trying to dig out a 2" hole.
Hey Sherry! I had tried this and had some issues with the top sides falling so it was more of a hassle at this time for me anyway. I’ve been able to get pretty quick at making them this way now. I’m sure there are many ways to make them better and we will experiment with more as time goes on, I’ll let ya know how it goes :)
@@coppertreeacres Hey, whatever works, right? All your seedlings look so good! Looking forward to your planting out and garden tour. Good luck with your pecan sales!
Hello there, where do you get those big trays you have the seed blocks in? I'm primarily thinking of the metal ones but even the green ones. Those look very handy.
Hi there! My mother in law had them from when her sister had a restaurant, they are aluminum oven trays. You may be able to pick some up at a used restaurant supplies or on a market place or on Offer up 👍🏻 if I think of anywhere else you can look I will let you know 🙂
Hi there, I should have called it a light intensity control rather than a dimmer. It’s for controlling the brightness according to the stage you are growing something, the instructions show what percentage the lights should be adjusted for germination, growing, fruiting, etc. as well as the amount of hours to run them and distance they should be from plants at each stage 😊
Great idea.. I'm Very new to this idea of hydroponic growing for myself. I have only found your channel recently. I'm going to try growing the micro greens & mixed lettuces in recycled plastic containers like I have seen you do. I need to change my diet, eat more greens, etc but I fear buying the commercially grown greens because they find contamination too often. I wish you well with your experiments. They sound logical to me, but I don't know much.. lol.. And I will let you know how my own growing greens work out, in the future.. Thanks.. & happy gardening.. 😊
If you check out our “Big Harvest” Video it has the big shaker machine that can shake the bigger trees and larger branches individually of really tall trees like yours sound to be. There are a couple orchards in our area that were planted in 1929 where the trunks are too large for the shaker machine so they shake individual large branches to harvest the pecans.
