As someone with an SO in Europe, the healthcare is not what it's cracked up to be. She is drowning in debt because we can't figure out what is wrong with her. The specialists we are having to take her to are draining our bank accounts with no end in sight. Maybe the government helps with basic things, but we feel completely alone in our fight to make her better here in Europe. Don't believe what people tell you.
I cried when I saw your video. Every year I have the same longing for Santiago. This year I want to walk the route through Portugal for the first time and I already know that it will be very beautiful. thank you for your video .. 🥰
Hi David, I love this video! As a Chinese Dutch girl myself, I can relate to this story and I think it’s amazing to share these stories with the world. Wishing your channel great success! ☺️
I became ill and was not able to work for 2 year so I was fired. Our CEO tried to trick me into signingan agreement where I got 0 euros. I called a lawyer and in the end I got like 15k euros.
Strange videos. I vacation a lot using rail. The Netherlands is more expensive than the UK for public transport? That day ticket in the Netherlands is poor value. Just using your bank card for different trips in a day, unless you have a very convoluted route, will be much cheaper. I have another vacation to the Netherlands in July. Five cities, nine days. Pricing out my train travel to and from the cities, plus my bus to the airport on the last day (from Haarlem) $79. That’s without any discounts. And you call that expensive?
I think the salary in Europe is too low for the tax rate. For people who want to excel, the Netherlands probably is not the best place. Healthcare- take a pinch of salt. I’d say it’s quite basic, cost of living is too high compared to income. Fundamentally, high tax high welfare hasn’t had a super long history in Europe. The wealth was accumulated long time ago, the question is if everyone wants to chill and not work much BUT wants to be looked after, where is the money going to come from? Everyone plays a role in the economy, it is absolutely right not to focus on money, but with resources getting more scarce I doubt this is the solution/sustainable way to run a society. US has many issues, but no doubt if you’d like to make sth happen, America is the place.
Thanks for sharing your experience of living in Dutch. I was wonder is speaking the local language required to work and study in Dutch? How did learn to speak Dutch?
I prefer people, not only in service, to be friendlier than the occasional gruffiness of some in Germany, Spain or Eastern Europe. I have enjoyed the British kind of friendlyness and was disappointed of the often intrusive but later untrue kindness of some Americans, but: in films and fiction you can see that there really are many kinds of service throughout the years and places and all depends on the types of waiters AND customers everywhere and when. I feel best when I can feel welcomed, not abused and robbed of my money and dignity as a customer and feel free to exchange a few thoughts on the quality of the service but not the weather or politics.
Thank you for a good content. Working as a professional in LA, i know exactly what it means to be in a competitive workplace. It gets exhausting fast and leads to toxic environment. Burnouts and career changes happen every other year. But also the US is where the world class industries and products are created, and the gap between it and the rest of the world keeps widening. Be a part of growth and development or choose, if it’s possible to do so, the easy going life. Pick your pill i guess 😅
You also pay taxes in the US and another country, you end up paying more for housing because you still need a permanent residence in the US for VISA purposes. Unless youre very wealthy or you come from a wealthy family its not even remotely reasonable to live abroad for 80% of Americans. Also the Us is much nicer than 80% of Europe. Especially the average city.
How can I find a English speaking job in Netherlands? Non IT job, more sales, client interaction, business development? I am looking to move to Netherlands with my family but work is priority.
5:25 Not the 700€ all included De Pijp studio 😭😭😭 such prices in Saphartipark and still sent money. Not even in Madrid or Barcelonacan you find anything near similar
It’s funny because as Americans traveling abroad, most get very fearful of other countries because we have money therefore a target on our back, but tbh they’re probably fearful of Americans & the violence that they hear about 😂
Great. Next thing all of you need to do is stay in Europe. And go to the US Embassy and renounce your US citizenship. Then you will definitely be happier and so will we.
I’m American, born and raised in California. My mom is born American with Dutch roots, she has blonde hair and blue eyes. My dad is a naturalized American born in Hong Kong. I’m a half-breed but if you talk to my in-laws (who are American with Dutch/Norwegian roots), you wouldn’t think I was half at all, they only ever see me as 100% Asian. If you talk to my Asian family they will tell you “she’s white American”. I literally have never fit in anywhere my entire life. Every time I see my in-laws, within the first 30 minutes, I guarantee you there will be an Asian “joke”… the same jokes I’ve heard for 30+ years of my life. Pretty sure they know that I know they’re not joking at this point when I have to hear it every. single. time. I see them. I resent having to see them now and I’ve lost a tremendous amount of respect for them. When I talk, they say I speak with an accent. It’s funny because English is my only language haha, they just “hear” an accent because they’re so stereotype-happy and too focused on my Asian features their brains add in a fake Asian accent. Last year I had a baby son, he has blond hair and blue eyes. My husband’s family was literally so confused as to why my son came out with those features. I even got “jokes” asking if I was sure that he was my baby. I’ve honestly lost so much interest in being associated with them and their irrational racism towards 50% of who I am. The funniest thing is how they fully claim their Dutch/Norwegian identity and I’m pretty sure they’ve never even been to the Netherlands or Norway let alone speak or read the language.
Europe is changing the world has awakened! After decades and decades of wars at home it has taken some time to reflect on peace and relaxation. It is currently dismantling nuclear power plants in favor of cities 100% powered by sources renewables it will take time but the path has now been taken. 🇪🇺🤝🏻🇺🇲
Yeah, dismantling nuclear plants is such a "good" thing. Over the past 5 years, coal-fired power has caused cancer in more people than nuclear power has ever caused, counting Chernobyl and Fukushima.
I got layed off once, during my 1st year contract. I worked for 5 months when I got "the news". Since they did not "get anything on me", by their own admission, they said they couldn't expect me to sign anything, instead they offered me "Gardening Leave" for the remainder of my contract (= 7 months!) An offer like that is very unusual. Normally a company would offer a "Vaststellingsovereenkomst" or "Severance agreement". After being bored out of my head in 2 months, I found a new job, meaning I had a remaining 5 months on that "Gardening Leave". The trick is to not yet sign that new contract, instead start a negotiation with the company you are still enrolled in, saying: "Hey, I got a new job but didnt sign yet. They offer me the same salary as you guys are already paying me, so shall we make a deal for the remaining 5 months?" this got me a gross 2 months pay in the end. Lesson 1 here: Always negotiate! 5 months dor doing nothing is way worse for the company than paying 2 months to get rid of you in total. Lesson 2 here: Get an insurance for "Rechtsbijstand" (lawyer help) in specific work-related disputes. I called upon it twice and it already paid off for the next 25 years of paying for the insurance (+/- €15,- or €20,- a month)
Thank you. I’m now a subscriber. You are singing to the choir. I stopped working in 2019 at 59. I was supposed to get back to work but I’m happy I didn’t. I have less money but I’m healthier, I weight about 60 pounds less, I know both of my daughters better and I participate in my grand kids lives. I appreciate your perspective. Carry on!
when is was 10 (im 20 now) me and my dominican puerto rican mom and papua new guinean moluccan dad moved to amsterdam from harlem new york and there are many cultures here including my own and their dishes are all over the city so when referred to dutch food i suppose you mean actual dutch food which then i can understand but theres more international food to be found in the city than actual dutch food
Very well done report. A nice mix of American and Asian cultural view of the country I was born in. Moved to Portugal in 2004 because The Netherlands moved too fast (ICT job in Consultancy) for my liking. After 2 years in Fátima I learned what living slow means. With a bit of luck the current climate change will even bring more sunshine to that country. I had to move away from it to see its true beauty and to learn tactful / respectful communication. Still working on that one. The Netherlands is not homogenous though; Brabant doesn't compare to Amsterdam, Groningen and Maastricht are both physically and culturally far apart.
this is the reason why most major companys in NL hired eastern european workers through temp firms they work below min wage have the room and food they get deducted from pay and when they get sick or are no longer usefull they lose their job housing and get no pay .News article in march 2024 said there tens of thousends of migrant workers living on the streets so be carefull if your from abroad thinking off working in NL
As an American considering moving to Denmark, take your shoes off when you walk in my house or you won’t ever be coming back. I had a new friend come over the first time and he didn’t take his shoes off so I asked him to remove his shoes since I don’t allow them in the house. He didn’t know. Second time he came over he did the same thing and “forgot”. His parents allowed him to wear shoes in the house. I never invited him over anymore.
Concerning the matters at 6:12 - this is why it's important to not be that "one-trick pony" at your job. If the amount of work grows smaller and restructuring needs to happen? Be the person that can do more then one thing, your diversity strengthens your position. You don't have to do it all, but at least be quite competent in a small amount of disciplines within your work.
thats very interesting to say ive moved to amsterdam with my dominican puerto rican mom and papua new guinean moluccan dad from harlem new york when i was 10 (im 20 now) and there are many different cultures here including my own which causes food from different cultures to be all over the city so when you say the food is horrific do you refer to the actual dutch food or in general? cause that wouldnt be correct
@@michaelairley2015you dont add anything to your opinion though like i said theres a wide range of food and different cultures here so what food are you referring to
