Last time I took a Sawyer filter on a hike, it didn't work. Not a single drop of water would pass through it. I'd used it on another hike, but the water I filtered wasn't particularly bad, as I recall. I'd only used the filter on that one occasion since backwashing it. So it seems that storing these filters in a slightly used condition can lead to clogging. Therefore, I am not a fan. If you have to backwash every time you use them to avoid clogging then they require too much maintenance for me.
Since you've run water through the 2nd filter, you cannot let it freeze or it will be ruined. As the water inside freezes, it expands and creates gaps in the fibers, which could allow bacteria to pass through. They can be kept in freezing conditions as long as they have never been used.
After this test, I backflushed the Sawyer Mini three times with tap water, pushed 3x air through it to get most water out, and then put it in the food dehydrator together with the test samples. So in theory it should be completely dry again after 48 hours near human body temperature and constant air flow. But you´re mentioning an important point: If filter is wet don´t let it freeze. Manuel; DL2MAN
@@dl2man I'd be curious to know if that actually works. It was my understanding that the fibers are so close together that it's virtually impossible to get all the water out. If it works, I might give it a go so I can stop sleeping with mine every winter lol.
Thanks ! I feel, that my intuition did not dissapoint me, when it told me to have a closer look. What I found out completely justified the effort. My only drawback is the lack of interest of the manufacturers. As if they didn´t care that their products don´t work.
Hi John, I would still recommend the Grayl for backpacking trips after what I´ve seen. This is why I bought a second one in combination with a millibank bag. 73 Manuel; DL2MAN
Hi, I have a original life straw and a off brand copy. Both sealed and never used. Problem with those types of filters is: They are intended to be used with your mouth to drink directly from a water source. I´m not a fan of this, as water sources might not be available constantly along the way, and I´d like to fill up my water containers, once I´m at a water source. There´s no way to do that with a life straw. You can just drink with it. Other downside of those straw type filters: They work with the same technology as the Sawyer Mini (hollow fibre membrane tube bundles) and should be tested before actual use. And to do that you´d need to use the "syringe trick" I did with the Ahlstrom filter. However: In real world, clean side could be contaminated anyway as the function of those filters is to put your mouth to it and the bacteria from your mouth can grow and contaminate the clean side.
If your onboard speaker is too low, consider putting it on top of your closet. if that´s still too low, think about your rooftop. Get creative. Fly it up with a drone. Climb up Mount Everest, Take it with you on an airplane. You can put your speaker as high as you want ! :) For the unlikely case, this was not , what you meant: Speaker is known to be sub-optimum. I recommend headphones or active speaker. Onboard speaker is just an emergency solution in case you don´t have anything else. 73 Manuel; DL2MAN
A tip, if you change the encoder, use a plum type encoder instead a half axle type, it fits better for any type of knobs, 15mm length is nice for small knobs.
Hi Manuel, sehr cooles Video. Ich habe mir bei Retevis exakt das selbe Mike gekauft. Wird die nächsten Tage hier bei mir ankommen. Dort ist dann ein Stecker (Kennwood Norm) dran. Hast du an deinem Mike einen neuen Stecker, also 2x Klinke dreipolig 3,5mm angebaut?
Hello Manuel Dave G4NOW in Greenwich London, thanking you for such a brilliant demonstration. It’s so good that you are making videos again. I missed them! Keep them coming - what a clever idea is your tr(u)-sdx. Would love to see a summary video to bring maybe latecomers to date with a hi-lights and updates timeline. It’s been a fascinating story of development all the way. All the best Dave
The SSB audio quality sounds intelligible...I'll order one of your radios, if it passes muster, I'll include it my emergency comms package. Great idea to keep the radio as a true emergency shortwave transceiver, just in case other methods of communication fail, say because of an EMP blast
I really enjoyed watching our CW QSO! I highly value the support of our local community. Thank you, Manuel, for the kind and motivating words!☺Considering the (tr)uSDX, I was really impressed of the SSB modulation. There was a very low noise level at my location, but you also sound great at other participants ends living inside cities.
Hello Manuel, thank you for your new video and of course also for responding to the wishes regarding SSB contacts. Of course, I know that the (tru)SDX was not designed for SSB operation and that the signal processing in SSB is done in a completely alternative way. I think it worked great for that. Congratulations on your successful deployment. So far I only have three contacts in SSB with the (tru)SDX. The audio reports weren't particularly good. My QSO partners thought there was something wrong with my microphone. There was talk of “distortions” and “harsh” audio on my part. What I noticed, however, is that the sound is also extremely different on the reception side. In your video, for example, the IC-705 reproduced your audio extremely well and others, despite the good field strength, didn't reproduce it so well. Thank you Manuel for sharing this emergency radio test with us. Good job. I'm continuing to learn CW... but I don't expect to get an accident-free CW QSO this year. I'm already working hard on myself and I'm probably not a natural at it. ;-) All the best and stay healthy, 73.
In fact it was designed for SSB Operation (with lowered expectations regarding quality). I also think it works great ! Fair point with your comment on "reception side". Most of my feedback yesterday was "modulation good" or even "super", however, one OM said it was "dull" or "muffled", don´t know the correct translation (missing high pitch), so he concluded, that would be the problem of low readability, when S/N Ratio drops. From mic tests I could also see, that mic sensitivity and speaking distance need to match your current setup. And last but not least: Don´t be afraid to make mistakes in CW. I´ve put my own listening and sending mistakes in my edits on purpose. Just to show: I´m also not a professional and we all make mistakes. A good CW Partner will understand, what you want to send and help you by leading you through QSO and repeat when needed. 73 Manuel; DL2MAN
Of course ! If I find something that I like, I buy a lot of it and don´t need to waste a thought about it anymore. However, the "set of same stuff" changes over the years, but within a certain time period I usually wear the same stuff :) 73 Manuel; DL2MAN
I received my (tr)u-sdx a long time ago, but have not had a chance to play with it. My plan is to pair it with a smartphone running an FT-8 app and use it for digital mode POTA / SOTA activations. Thanks for all your work on this little radio!
I don't understand the German (except for the counting) but I love this demo! So many variables tested, bravo! Once I have my licences I will be ordering a (tr)uSDX
Always good to hear from you. I've been following the RU-vid reviews of (tr)uSDR. Seems like txcvs that cost ten times as much work a little better. Thanks for making amateur radio accessible.
Where did you find the amplified microphone speaker that plugged into the truSDX? Could you share manufacturer and model number please? Also did it work without modifying the connector? Thank you!
I was thinking of adding the link to the mic Video in this one, but I forgot..... There you go: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dEL74xyqwKM.html
I know, it´s not rocket science. But some people need to see it so they know it can be done. Not everyone has the same level of experience or knowledge. 73 Manuel; DL2MAN
