Something a little different, a short video and my explanation of "Clapotis Conditions" experienced during yesterday's kayaking trip.
A grey damp trip out of Tynemouth with a little surfing up along the coast returning to the North Pier in superb Clapotis conditions just to finish the trip off nicely.

Thank you Southpaw, 😊 so pleased you're still following along with me. I've got a new one done which is uploaded and should have processed fully by tomorrow evening. Don't forget to watch on a big TV to get the best detail and viewing experience, settle done to a nice cuppa or something stronger for this one 😂😂

@@geoffburkeIntroduced my daughter to sit in kayaks yesterday. Fairly short, wide things somewhere between a touring and recreational kayak. She said it felt tippy. 😆 Got her to put her paddle across my kayak and see how far she felt comfortable leaning it. She found she couldn't lean it far. She was relaxed after that. Will introduce her to the tippy ones at some stage.

@@gadgetman_nz4092Lovely, and so good you're giving her the opportunity and introducing her to our wonderful sport. I hope she takes to it like the proverbial duck to water and soon gets used to increased stability the more her confidence grows. No substitute for time in the boat on the water with movement...steady away and I wish her many happy years kayaking 👍 Start them young and watch them fly 💕

Nice, it’s very similar to the rebound of the cliffs around the other Newcastle. Great fun and awesome for developing skills. It’s nice to have a name for the gut churning lifts and falls I’ve experienced over the years in 2m plus swells paddling along the cliffs!

Hi Dean and thanks so much for your comments, I hope you are enjoying my little adventures. Yeah clapotis can produce some incredible conditions. I'm trying to think whether I've paddled around Newcastle, I think the nearest I got was around Swansea, I remember Caves Beach? Somewhere the locals called The Gauntlet. Its a few years now with members of Hunter Kayak Klan and Central Coast Canoe Club, a great bunch of folk and I still keep in touch with some...Happy Days 👍 I will try and get back for a paddle with them sometime but it's more difficult as my sone and family have moved further north to Port Macquarie, he's going to hook me up with local paddlers when I'm over next year. Stay safe Dean 👍

Hi Nicolas, Thanks for your comments and I like the way you think 👍 🤔 but perhaps a fishing kayak may not handle quite as well in a confused sea like clapotis conditions, being much wider and shorter and no deck to stabilise the boat with your legs or roll back upright if you get capsised. And your right, I googled the word 'Clapotis' and it was a French Mathematician that introduced it! See below: www.google.com/search?q=whare+does+the+word+clapotis+come+from&client=tablet-android-samsung-rev2&sca_esv=567048008&sxsrf=AM9HkKlxOR3PqpN-hqFGK-X1UUntPXrAsA%3A1695246508635&ei=rGgLZeilJu6H9u8P24eDiAo&oq=whare+does+the+word+clapotis+come+from&gs_lp=EhNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwIiZ3aGFyZSBkb2VzIHRoZSB3b3JkIGNsYXBvdGlzIGNvbWUgZnJvbTIKEAAYRxjWBBiwAzIKEAAYRxjWBBiwAzIKEAAYRxjWBBiwAzIKEAAYRxjWBBiwAzIKEAAYRxjWBBiwAzIKEAAYRxjWBBiwAzIKEAAYRxjWBBiwAzIKEAAYRxjWBBiwA0i7K1AAWABwAXgBkAEAmAEAoAEAqgEAuAEDyAEA4gMEGAAgQYgGAZAGCA&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp Thanks again for your comments and following my kayaking adventures. Once again Bob thanks for your comments and so pleased you're following along with my video's 👍 Yeah cameras have greatly improved and particularly action cameras, not without there limitations and certainly frustrations. In fact just as we got out of the piers it locked up (wouldn't turn off !! ), I had to sit with the spraydeck off, strip the GoPro Hero 10 camera out of the mouth mount and floaty jacket to get to the battery door, open and remove the battery and replace, build it all back up and spraydeck back on before continuing on...a real pain and happens quite a lot (typical GoPro problem) !! Not sure if I mentioned previously, Ife got a few good video's I'm editing from our Shetland tour at the start of the month... some cracking stuff! A Solo which will be released poss Friday/Saturday and another to follow of our Muckle Flugger/Out Stack trip, and a couple more later. So keep checking back or Subscribe for Notifications if not already. Thanks again Bob Regards Geoff

@@bobfreestone1752 Thanks Bob, not military at all sadly. Just an ordinary bloke of 73 with a love for over 50 years of sea kayaking. Worked all my life in or allied to the motor trade and ended my working years as a motor vehicle instructor/ assessor in a college. I have also enjoyed quite a few extreme sports over the years; paragliding coach, paramotor pilot, Advanced Diving Instructor, caver, and loads of outdoorsy and nature loving stuff but never stopped kayaking. So maybe something of that gave you the idea?? Where are you based, Scotland? Keep enjoying the video's and I welcome your comments. Best Regards Geoff

Wow, it looks so easy how You push your boat through the ways and keep balance all the way. It´s always an insperation watching Your films. Thank's for sharing! I do have a question concerning Your fit to the boat. Do You have both thighs pressed at the same time agaist the thigh braces, or is on thigh on the brace and the other one not? I have experience with downwind and waves that holding balance with "jamed in" thinghs is almost impossible to do. Capesizing becomes a sure thing..... ;-). Greetings from Germany

Hi Dominic and thanks for those kind comments, also great to hear you're enjoying my adventures 😀 I tend to be fairly loose in the boat having it set up for multiday extended trips, legs mostly dropped in the bottom of the boat with only my toes/balls of my feet on the footrest, seat set up with a little padding either side but again nothing restricting to affect the legs. I always tell people, it's a must to relax staying loose at the waist and allowing the boat to move freely under you, that way the body is always upright until you need use support strokes, only then do you need to quickly 'lock into the boat' and lean into "breaking" waves then returning to the upright position. It's all about relaxing, if you're tense/tight in the boat, you'll react to the movement and that reaction will put you in. Little subtleties in support strokes will become second nature and eventually a subliminal act. Strangely I've learnt more about my own paddling style over the last few years from editing and producing these video's 😂😂 Thanks again Dominic and all the best with your kayaking...loads more editing still to do and thr 1st part a new 5 day trip coming in the next week or so! Watch this space 👍 Cheers and don't forget to share the video's with friends as it helps me grow the channel 😀 😊

Hi Geoff. Thank You very much for Your tipps and the sharing of Your experience. This confirms my first trys in loosening the legs and having only the pushing leg against the thigh rest, for a very short period of time on the forward stroke. Most of the time I'm working by "thinking" on loose legs 🙂 This will help for the next rides on the river Rhein ;-). I'm looking forward to your next movies and I'm sharing the videos with our paddel friends around the river and furthermore. Take care and have a happy new Year 2024. Greetings from Germany 🙂

Thanks Geoff only thing is time I’m really a carer since Linda had more cancer but I’ve bought a dry suit which with some of my little trips in my trimaran I should have had earlier as you never know whether sailing or canoeing on your own to be careful although I’ve only come close once to upending little boatie. One of my friends is going to sail around uk in spring 24 so I will join him if I can for a west coast trip I mentioned heading out to st kilda so who knows.

Hello Geoff, Great video! I found it interesting because I too had an opportunity to experience the clapotis effect just last weekend. It was a somewhat similar trip. We were paddling in the busy Halifax Harbor with intentions of having a waterside view of some waterfront festivities. In approaching our final destination we had to wait for the departure of a a 1200' container ship. I'm glad I had my marine radio with me to listen to the local harbour authority direct traffic. When all was clear we paddled close and parallel to the pier. With the wind and tide conditions, unsolicited wake from passing vessels, combined with the rebound, we experienced what I think was clapotis. Of course, I must humbly admit I did not know it was referred to as anything more than exciting and "spiced up" water. That is why I follow the Masters. Also Geoff, can I ask, would we have been experiencing turbulence created by the thrusty departure of the container ship and it's three accompanying tugs (already 400 - 500 meters away)? Again, you have provided great entertainment and expert instruction all in one. I am happy to assume that you are feeling well and that little bit of surgery back when is no longer an issue. Thanks Geoff, always looking forward to the next one!
@geoffburke
@geoffburke 9 месяцев назад
Hi Doug, I trust you are well and thank you so much for your lovely comments which are very much appreciated. You must have felt pretty insignificant so close to the 1200' juggernaut and yes, I think the turbulence from it together with any opposing wind whistling around it and propeller wash would produce some significant clapotis and very turbulent water...well done and not quite the place or time to have any sort of incident 👏👍👍 I'd also say your theory of turbulence from the tugs would be correct, despite their size they have incredible engine power to drive large propellers enabling them to move a tremendous amount of water In order to drag huge megaships around. I'm so glad you like and keep following me on my adventures!! It helps make the long hours of editing all worthwhile, the kayaking bit is the easy bit, which I love, and again thanks. I'm pleased to say the spinal operation was a huge success and I've been very fortunate with the speedy recovery. There's still other degenerated vertebrae, which are still giving discomfort but not giving in, is the only answer to enjoying the sport I love and will deal with that when the time comes. Till then I'll be enjoying more new adventures, creating lots more video's and hopefully receiving loads more wonderful comments, like yours. Thanks again Doug, best regards Geoff
