This channel is dedicated to sharing information about Gliding (general flights, upgrades and competition flights) along with BMW videos. I am thinking of splitting these channels out, or at least creating multiple playlists, but I’d be interested in any feedback from people who have done this (positive or negative).
This channel covers:
👉 Gliding Competitions (in-flight footage) 👉 Gliding Upgrades, Instruments & Maintenance 👉 BMW 4 Series Performance 👉 BMW 4 Series Add-ons 👉 BMW Car Detailing
I have a Standard Cirrus Glider based in the UK with the Call-sign T7 (Tango Seven), hence the intro on the gliding related videos.
I am starting to enter competitions and will upload content relating to maintenance, upgrades and any memorable flights including competitions.
Same here, I have one from the back going into the panel for easy access. But you could also use a USB hub if you needed more slots. The one at the top is for Ethernet (network).
Gary, what numbers do we have to be mindful of with regards to gearbox health? Does the app scan and recommend that you don’t flash if it detects an issue?
Disabled the front wheels? the figures are bumped up because you have no drive train loss, I can guarantee if you put that onto a 4WD dyno, it would be running 360 max - I’ve seen a few tuners do this, I’ve always said road testing is better that dyno testing, more consistent results, the dyno setting is too perfect and the wind is perfectly aerodynamic over and around the car, in real life situations, surfaces and cross wind all play a factor.
Correct and as you said, going to Unicorn proved that and it was much quicker and driveable too. Wished I went to Unicorn first but then I wouldn’t have realised the difference between tuners.
I always do that and explain to the person holding the tail plane to make sure with a good force but it’s better to know it’s connected before the check rather than relying just on that. Valid point though.
Also, the gearbox usually restricts torque (BMW do anyway and ZF actually says it can be higher). I applied the XHP gearbox flash and that definitely made a difference and was as noticeable as the original map. Definitely need to do both together.
Very useful video, haven't tried to setup the WiFi yet, but this is great help! Maybe next time mount the camera so we can read the screen of the OpenVario. I have 1 more questions: how do you type in waypoint names if you set a task? External keyboard doesn't seem to work, trackpad (or Mouse-mode on the stick remote) seems to be the easiest way Also: Just one small tip/request: could you timestamp the video to make chapters? You can put the timestamps in the description of the video
Yeah, it’s an old go pro camera and I’ve ordered the new go pro 10 so the better picture quality and stabilisation should sort that. I may do another one on the airfield to show it working from plugging in the box to getting updates and competition tasks etc. I’m in a few competitions this year so can show that and I have a camera mount in the glider anyway.
Hi there, I noticed your other question and can see I didn’t properly answer it. If you plug in an external usb keyboard into one of the slots then that should work (that’s what I do). However, in the glider, I have the Stefly Remote Stick. The usb keyboard is F1 for menu. You could also set a task via any PC software (SeeYou or Skysight etc) and save the file and add it to your usb drive and put it in the root XCSOAR folder and it will copy when doing a restore and the browse to it on the task screen.
Hi Richard great video i need to get my F30 335D gearbox done next , After watching your remap vid from a couple of years ago i took my car to unicorn after recently fitting a CSF intercooler for a stage 1+ last week , I also had a DMS map when i first got my car a few years ago , Unicorn did a before and after tune and made an extra 15 BHP ( 399.18 BHP ) and 80 NM torque ( 781 NM ) on top of the DMS Map , Car feels much better now , Happy i took it to them thanks for your recommendation
Glad it made an improvement. Rick is a genius when it comes to tuning and gets the best out of each individual car without risking anything. Hope you enjoy it 👍
Great video....I was looking to do this to my F31 as I wanted to add the shadow edition items like mirror caps, exhaust trims & the M Performance front splitter & rear diffuser. I looked on eBay for genuine black mirror caps and they are £500 😮so I thought about doing the similar M4 style ones.
They are good but at about 65-70 mph the passenger side cap has a little wind noise but the drivers side is fine. I think it’s just the fact that the tabs are sticking out and shaped as best they can. Worth it though as they look mega 👍👍👍
Top tip to anybody with newer cars, don't ever go by the dealers service interval, they are sales tactics to make you think they're going to be cheaper to maintain and i'm sure designed to cause failures down the road so someone has to pay to get them fixed later on. Most manufacturers now claiming 20k miles intervals!! Look at your oil and filters after 5k and they will be rank, especially diesel and all causes build up. I generally do mine every 5k but certainly never go over 10k
I flinched for a second @4:47 when you rested the weight of the canopy on the DV panel rail with your left hand. Interesting video nonetheless, thanks for sharing :) We also just installed an OpenVario in our glider. Are you happy with it?
Thanks for the feedback. It was only for a few seconds and should be ok but I know what you mean about the canopy. The Openvario is brilliant and I’ve flown in a competition plus a few cross country flights and it way better than the Oudie I used to have. I’m about to do a video on the Compman application that reads the competitions and downloads tasks and airspace automatically!!!
Interesting video….I have an F31 335d and plan to do engine & gearbox map when my car is out of warranty. Try using Quicktime to record the screen on your MacBook and split your edited video 50:50 so that it’s easier for people to see what you’re doing on your laptop. Makes it easier for people who watch these types of videos on their phones (me 😂). Great content and consider me subscribed 👍
Lovely flight! I'm late to the party, but, I just bought a Standard Cirrus and will be doing an annual on it soon. Your instrument panel rebuild really piqued my interest! Thank you (N777BD PY).
I got 435d xdrive, same year as yours, cant do any more than 37mpg in town when driving like an old man, when putting it in a Sports mode every now and again 30-33mpg. Basically my numbers are much lower than yours, wondering its due to remap or my car is just like that ... currently trying to milk it on one tank, to see how much I can get out of it and sitting on 33mpgh...
Hi Alex, did you have it done at Unicorn? I drive motorways and A roads and if driving normally get the top 45 ish mpg. The average since I’ve had it is 39.7. Some maps may just be overfueling. Also if that’s the case or sensors are being tricked it may be reporting wrong, so try the old school way of full to full and noting the distance and how much to fill it up again.
Glad you liked it. It goes without saying, but always get someone to check the glider (who knows the Cirrus) before you fly for a couple of times. Better safe than sorry. You’ll love flying the Cirrus.
I believe so, as some of the exams are very similar if not the same. But the basic flying skills are developed in gliding and should be second nature so this leaves you more capacity to ducks on the specific PPL power stuff. I’m not an expert thought !!!
@@richardtorr-T7 yeah I guess it would make sense. Flying time is flying time. Its like 10x cheaper to hire a glider for an hour than it is an aeroplane. A place near me in Lincolnshire is offering them at 0.25p per minute for single seat and 0.45p per minute for 2 seater. Winch launch at £10. Even with a 2 seater you can get a good 7 hours flying time under your belt for every 1 hour it would cost in a aeroplane.
That's a bummer! Hopefully, the weather is getting better next few days. i have not flown in over 3 weeks now because all we get is rain here. it looks like the weather is getting better and I might test fly the cirrus I have an eye on. :D
I placed cling film along the fuselage (bottom) where the canopy closes and taped it down. I then applied the silicone to the canopy itself and closed the canopy pushing it against the fuselage and cling film and left it for 24 hours. The video is then me returning and removing the tape as the cling film is stuck to the silicone when lifting the canopy and then peel off the cling film.
Hi Tim, which video are you watching as the older ones I had an ‘Oudie 2’ which is mounted on a cradle on the right side. I now have a 7” display fixed in the centre of the instrument panel and have sold that device. It was good but the OpenVario is better in my opinion.
I have a Std.Cirrus that I imported from Holland last year. With the pandemic I wasn't able to fly very much. I have some doubts about the one-piece stabilizer and I would like to send you some questions about the model. It would be possible? Do you have an email? Thanks.
@@papatangovictor yeah if you look for information on the interwebs than you find that site as one of the first suggestions. Apparently i just bought one, or we agreed on a price i still have to testfly it tho
Hi Austin, Didn't need a mech vario as use the audio mainly. I had one in the old setup and didn't look at it much and found the ERA80 to be just as good and responsive. I've also turned on the vario display on the OpenVario (bottom right in the nav boxes) just as a backup. What do you want a closer look at and I can record it for you, or if you are in the UK and local to Hus Bos, then happy for you to pop over.
Thanks Stefan. It was the best place for it to go as there wasn’t any room behind the instrument panel. I’ve put a USB extension in the panel that is linked both to the PowerFLARM and OpenVario for updates and flight downloads. Keep up the good work on your channel too.
396bhp and 810nm torque. The bhp is probably higher but the air filter was clogged and when I got home ordered a K&N one. Plus it was hitting the torque limiter in 6th gear on the top of the runs abs changing up. Since then I’ve added the XHP gearbox flash and that has removed the limits and feels much better. I reckon bhp is about 410 real life.
@@richardtorr-T7 This will definitely void the warranty right? Are there any ways of getting more power and torque out of the 435d without voiding the warranty?
JMGlider hi. You need a power and data cable. I bought one with the Oudie as it doesn’t come as standard with one, just power. The one I have has the rj11 connector on the back to send power and data onto the usb c slot in the Oudie from the Era 80.
Hi Richard, I'm in the process of upgrading my SDI C4 but not sure what to get yet. Just replace my current e-vario with an S80/S100 or my mechanical (bohli) and e-vario with an LX 10K paired with an ERA80. I've flown with an S80, and I must say I quite like it. It's got needles for netto (air movement at speed) and relative vario. Is it possible to show, for example, relative vario on the needle itself and netto on the digital panel? The manual isn't the clearest as to what settings are possible.
SennaVdB yes, netto is one of the variables you can add to one of the four slots on the main screen (I’ve just started using that this year to check my mcready is at a sensible level. It’s all down to personal preference on the Era or S80/100. I tried both at the UK BGA conference (on a static mount) and found I could operate the Era easily but sound the sxx not as intuitive and thought that it should be as easy as possible when flying. I wouldn’t have the 10k as I think the screen is too small to show moving map and Isis an extra space. I’ve got a mint EOS57 for sale which could be paired with the 10k, if you are interested?? I’ve got an Oudie for maps which is a bigger screen.
@@richardtorr-T7 Might be true, it is still pretty small for a map. I do however use XCsoar/Top Hat on my phone, as I find that so easy to use and navigate with. Still stuck between two (ERA 80 and S80/S100) as I like it large and well readable. Still, there aren't many direct comparisons between them. Kinda like the multiple needles of the lxnav, but like simplicity, not much fiddling around and concentrate more on the actual flying and navigating.
SennaVdB ah, there must be a dealer that can show you them connected to see for yourself. Cost wise, you might be better with the S80 or Era and an Oudie (the Era syncs with the Oudie for tasks and Mcready, bugs etc.). That’s what I’ve got.
Very cool. I did a trial lesson many many moons ago at Husbands Bosworth, Been thinking about going back recently for another go as I do love being up in the air. Always fascinated by the cross country gliding though, I do wonder how often they have to land in a random field somewhere
Thanks for your feedback. I’d definitely recommend getting in touch with our club. Google ‘The Gliding Centre’. A very friendly bunch of people and you’ll get the bug again. Go for it and say hello if you join 👍
Could do with seeing a video of the dashboard when accelerating. I've seen a video of the DMS map on someone else's F30 335d and it looks rapid, so I would be keen to see a comparison.
Roel Baardman certainly, I should be flying again on 1st September so I’ll post one a few days later. Don’t forget to subscribe to get notified when it’s uploaded 👍
Check out evolve automotive based in luton, they have a youtube channel also. They are known worldwide and highly recommend you check them out they can achieve 700+ ft lbs. Your 335d will be a M4 killer. Good luck mate and i really hope you check them out.
Hi Simon, I've not got 'flying' experience of the S100, but I did look at the S80 and ERA80 side by side at the BGA Annual Conference and I found the user interface more intuitive on the ERA and that really swayed my decision, as I thought that whikst flying I wanted minum brain power allocated to using the unit. Its personal preference and I'm not aware of any features missing between each one. I was led to believe that the chipset in the S100 (S80) was older technology, but this may have changed now. Give Nick Kelly a call at LX Avionics and he can chat things though with you (mention my name).
Richard Torr, I think another difference between the two is that the Era has WiFi. Otherwise, probably a lot up to personal preference when it comes to interfaces, etc. Will try to get my hands on both before deciding. Thanks again!
Simon Landqvist no problem. If you are in the UK then speak with Nick at LX Avionics and if you are near Husbands Bosworth, then let me know and you can see it in action. We also have one fitted to our Discus club glider.
And make sure you go for the S100 over the S80, so you get the backup battery, and built in bluetooth. Well worth it IMO if you do contests and want to connect to an oudie/XCSoar . You probably already figured that out :) Also a remote stick on whatever you get is highly recommended.
