I heard the trio many times in New York when I was studying with the cellist Bernard Greenhouse, and then Bloomington, Indiana when attending the music school there where Pressler was distinguished professor for many many years. Greenhouse was unrivaled in his beautiful solos in the piano trio repertoire, Schubert Mendelssohn, Ravel, so elegantly played. And he taught the way he played with constant variety and beauty.
Ho conosciuto Natalia Karp.
They were a first-class ensemble, each of them shining artists. But to be honest, theirs is not my favorite interpretation of this piece. I think they make the first movement plod in spots, which they avoid in the intelligently paced slow (third) movement. And maybe it's a matter of non-optimal recording, or perhaps an over-reverberant room, but movements two and four sound just a bit hurried and blurred.
This sounds very amateurish, like it was recorded in someone's living room on an untuned piano. But in general I like York Bowen as a composer, and his playing of these pieces is charming.
Both are truly equipped to perform such Lieder! Sadly, as of last year, 2023, Mr Swallow has joined her! Keith was a tremendous musician with a technique to match the needs of such a musician.Hewas also a kind and affable man who showed one great courtesy and kindess and to me, much empathy as a young musician. Quite a few decades ago we corresponded with each other, he in very elegant copperplate!
Wonderful to hear her voice again and Keith's playing. Alfreda's singing is so beautiful and we lost a fine artist when she died. This is a truly stonking performance from both of them. Thank you for sharing it - My! what a voice.
If you don’t know of the existence of Alun Hoddinott, the music of Hoddinott, or that there are non commercial recordings available, the chance of finding it is hard work. What’s even harder is getting one’s hands on the sheet music as, unlike his compatriot and contemporary William Mathias, his music is with several publishers and tracking the music and publishers is by no means straightforward. As a result, familiarity with his language and technique is limited. At least Nimbus has the first ten piano sonatas committed to disc, but sadly the last three have not been added by them. This is not music to use in the background but to be listened to. I already own the score (Oriana Publications) and am finding it rewarding to follow. My pianistic skills being poor I would not dare to massacre such a well crafted composition, not even in the privacy of my home. The slight differences (or were they not notated in the original MS) between the performance and printed score are interesting, especially of the arpeggiated chords. This is undeservedly overlooked.
