She played the Emperor consierto at the very first concert I ever attended in Manchester with Barbirolli and the Halle Orchestra; a concert which included the first symphony of Brahmsin 1954. A wonderful introduction to the "concert hall sound" I have never lost the mesmerising sensation when the air around me was filled with that glorious sound.which 72 years of sheer heart-filling enjoyment have never lessened.
I have heard Bachauer in person many times (I'm very, very old). I play this work too, but not nearly as well as Gina. She does not rush it! CHEERS. It is amazing how many nonprofessional pianists can play this. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
Too bad Mme Bachauer is so overlooked. She had a massive sound and, as this shows, she could adjust it to achieve the most sensitive and beautiful delicacy. I heard her play many times when I was younger. Thank you for this.
Exceptional pianist . As critics said : She's the only female pianist who can interpret so well Brahms , since this concert requires strength in hands '' along with sensitivity . .
Remarkable ! Bachauer is titanic ! Unforgettable ! The orchestration I never paid real attention to this is really something Beethoven 1809 ith French troops in Vienna .I need to look at the Symphonies and con3,4 and violin concerto . Now I really understand why this concerto is so special ! Nothing in Mozart like concerti 3,4 and 5 (nothing in the Sonatas like the piano writing here [not true Waldstein and op.89but here it's all something different ! had noone until Berlioz to score like this . Liszt must have loved this music !
Gina Bachauer was such great pianist, for me the callas of the piano and then my beloved New York Philharmonic with Barbirolli there is also a concert with Brahms second:marvellous only the accustic in the new Avery Fisher Hall was shit for the orchestra!!
On the ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mcHoxRn6IUg.html there is the whole c-minor-Concerto played by G Bachauer. It begins with the 1st Mvt: Moderato.
Could modern pianists please listen and understand this. Tempo. It's not a speed competition. She plays with such a magnificietn feel. Totally unbelieable!!
I was in that concert... (first photo!) I remember her regal white dress! She had played Beethoven's Emperor at Herodes Atticus.... Great as always... 1975 I think... Just one year before she died...
Magical… right up there with the earlier Rubinstein recording, and in many ways with more clarity and security in the climaxes… gorgeous, a revelation.. and the orchestra is delicious too
Outstanding performance. I was a huge fan of Berman, until I saw this. I still like him though, his rendition is similar but doesn't reach the level of cathartic power of Baucher
This woman is one of the most underappreciated pianists of the 20th century, at least in the USA. She was beyond fantastic. My very first piano concert was when she played the Rach 2 in San Francisco when I was around 12 years old, in 1957. The experience literally changed my life.
Quite simply a wonderful interpretation with apparent phrasing. The recording qualities are not perfect though, edgy, even screamy violins. Time goes by!
Yes, it's nice to hear the march-like octaves detached - as notated, and as played by Rachmaninoff on a piano roll (if memory serves). Almost everyone sustains those notes and I think that takes away from the military bite which seems right for the other sections and contrasts nicely with the lyical central episode.
I have listened to many recordings of this concerto and this by far is my favorite. I don't think anyone else comes close to matching her dynamics and artistry.
