One more thing to mention here would be that Greyhounds that have been kept in kennels may not be aware of how to safely use stairs, so be patient and gentle with them using a lead while training them in use of stairs in your home. They are smart and tentative souls and often just need a little practice at many things they've never experienced. It's also great bonding time. Greyhounds forever!

Hi, I wanted to ask everyone to please consider adopting, saving the life of a Galgo or Greyhound. Scooby Medina, Galgos del Sol, Galgos del Sur among others are doing great work helping animals that are abused, tortured to death. Feel free to reach out to them, donate, save one of these sentient beings. Much luv 🤍

If you don't 'want' your greyhound on the couch then I would question whether or not you should actually have one in the first place. They are a lifestyle NOT a hobby.

Weve adopted retired racers exclusively for 25 years. They certainly train us using their gaze and with looks. All of our have chosen my hubs and I as his/her new parents by staring. The other bonds we met would either ignore us both or just one of us. All the hounds we adopted were the hounds who gave good, comforting eye contact to my hubs and I. They chose us and we were thrilled to be chosen! I’ve noticed many sighthound breeds tend to stare instead of barking as some breeds to communicate. They rely more heavily on behavior cues since they spent so much time on a pack. Greyhounds are extremely perceptive and easily pickup behavioral cues and can learn tricks/commas easily. My current 94 lb XXL baby boy Archibald, knows 12 verbal commands and 8 in sign language. He’s very smart and extremely in tune with me. I have medical issues (heart issues for long term kidney failure due to ADPKD that I was born with). My hounds have all been very protective of me especially when I’m ill. Ava and now my Archie know to herd me to sit down when my BP is low. It helps keep,me passing out upon standing up and walking around. If I actually do pass out, my hound stands guard over me until i eKe up. She don’t bit anyone but do limit who,can touch me until I am awake again. I have ADPKD which caused my kidneys to fail in my 30s. In 48 and on the UNOS Kidney Donor Registry. I would love to get Archibald certified as. medical Assistance Animal since he can detect massive drops in my BP before I become symptomatic. But he has SA and is a clingy Velcro boy. All my greyhounds were excellent mental health support animals and very sensitive to my physical health. They make such wonderful , gentle family members. Archie is a huge hit wit my mother and brothers cancer treated treatment center. When I take them in for appts, Archie comes and sits in the waiting room to greet people and help keep their mind off the cancer they are fighting. He’s a huge 97 lb pony sized hound and he just loves to visit with the patients. He’s so tall that it’s easy for bed bound patients to pet him. He loves meeting new people. As a fellow critical health issue patient, I have found the love and comfort forArchie to incredibly valuable in helping me keep a positive mindset the rough many setbacks. On my rough days when I’m stuck in bed resting, Archie is at my side giving comfort and keeping an eye on me. They truly are wonderful animals who are essential members of my family. I am thankful everyday that we adopted our first ex racer Ava on 2001. I doubt I would have survived the chronic pain, depression and isolation that being in stage 5 renal failure at just 35 can cause. Plus, is there anything cuter than a 95lb (nothing but bone & muscle) hound wearing full body pjs or a silly holiday sweater? My hounds are minor celebrities in our area for their funny sweaters, coats/pj sets. They adore dressing up and showing off their latest fashion statement. It always make me smile!

When you say that barking is just not their way, you are correct. We had one for over 18 months before he barked. We were both shocked.

Thank you ❤ my new greyhound did this on our first walk. I didn't know what to do so i just stopped and waited. But it kept happening... i figured everything was new, and he was perceiving something i just couldn't. I want to improve my leadership skills with him and make sure his life with us is the est i can possibly provide. Your video has helped. Thank you ❤

Maybe he is happy in his new life rather than living in a crate and racing he just can't believe he's been saved!! So he doesn't want to lose you!! Or he could have been like ours and made sure you were not going to the treat room!!

My whippet tells me he wants something, be just stand opposite me and gives me stink eye. He doesn't whine, gives my mum, play growls like he is talking, also when I let him out with a snack or a business trip he gives one short back to say I'm finished let me in.

I was hanging out with a some who has recently become my friend who has a greyhound. And the stares the dog were giving me made me think 'hold the phone' I recognize those kind of looks. I searched 'greyhound stare' and arrived at this video. The stares were reminding me exactly of my great dane and I had never heard of sighthounds as a thing and then you teaching me about it in the video made the stares make so much more sense haha. My friend was surprised that I knew what the stares meant of her greyhound but I've been learning it for years with my great dane and its such a 'loud' obvious language to me now. Thanks for teaching me that sighthounds are a thing!

Too funny! The lead in for this video..."we're going to probe the deepest recesses of the greyhound psyche". No human ever gets that far into the greyhound psyche. Greyhounds simply don't allow it. If by chance you are one of the "chosen few" whom a grey might allow to visit this precious inner sanctum...you are indeed a VERY SPECIAL human. Treasure it!

Well done! Every dog has an individual history. If one is new to this, the adopter is not prepared for the level of commitment and time to devote to this relationship. The reward will be an everlasting bond and a gift. Be respectful of that. You will be pleasantly surprised by their intelligence. Their dignity, companionship and love will gradually make you a better human being.

We adopted in Perth Western Australia through Greyhound .Adoptions WA. All vet requirements were dealt with prior to Adoption apart from an eye test (She needs drops twice a day) and that was paid for by the adoption organisation. The Vet we will use gives us a 10% discount for the life of the hound.

This is really interesting - as a horse owner and lover I know that foals will chatter/clack their teeth when they meet new horses and approach unfamiliar horses out of curiosity. The chatter is the baby’s way of telling the adult horses that “I’m just a baby, I’m harmless, and I’m just curious about you adult horse!” The myriad ways our animal friends communicate is truly fascinating!

My Greyhound was chattering when watching this. It's definitely a sign of pleasure and anticipation. It may have something to do with a high prey drive though, as my dog certainly has one. They really are very different dogs

“… border collies herd …” So did one of our greyhounds. We took her to a dog park, saw that she was comfortable, and allowed ourselves to get distracted for a few moments. We heard a few ‘look at that” comments and looked to see she hand cut a few small white dogs out of the crowd and herded them into a tight group. She wasn’t aggressive, just acted like it was natural, running around the perimeter of the group to keep them together.

I adopted 4 Greyhounds from Ireland ( I am in Italy) and had absolutely no problems whatsoever, since I was being fully alerted by the rescue group about cats and other major issues! In addition, these people constantly check on my hounds and are always available when I need an advice. They did '' not forget'' to tell me anything.

Just wait ... they get over it in a couple of minutes, gentle pull a few times as a cue and they'll just break out of it and continue as if nothing has happened. It's normal. Mine has usually seen a mouse/vole/rat and is just in 'Wait and see if any more movement' mode. It's not a problem. They're sight-hounds!

I’ve had 2 greyhounds and each of them had serious gastrointestinal problems…vomiting blood and pooping blood. The first one vomited blood at 2 am on a Saturday morning. I rushed her to the emergency vet across town and they got her on a medication that stopped the bleeding. I got her to her regular vet on Monday for follow up care. The regular vet said had she not been to the emergency vet immediately, she would not have survived through the weekend. The 2nd one had his first episode after regular vet hours (of course) so he went through the same protocol as his predecessor. The meds kicked in right away and cleared up the gastrointeritis quickly. He had a 2nd bout several years later after we moved to a small town in another state. Fortunately the bloody poop happened on a weekday morning…the problem came in finding a vet who was able to take him as a new patient. We eventually were told of an urgent care vet…82 miles away! I had all of his medical records so getting the meds he needed went smoothly. The bright spot in that episode was the vet had never treated a greyhound before and no one in her office had ever seen a greyhound in person. He left the hospital as a rock star🎉

I have always had cats w/my greyhounds. Never have had a problem. They were both cat tested, but I was still careful, but no problems. They often sleep together, I even have a photo of my grey using "her" cat as a pillow.
