I really have the best of the best with my girl. She gets along famously with the cats (sadly just 1 cat now since my 17yo sadly passed away in Sep), and works with me in my counselling practice as a therapy dog. She is so sweet, and loving, cuddly and loyal. But she can be stubborn if she doesn't want to get out of bed, and I have to lift her to get her in the car as she refuses to jump. She can sit, and has gone all the way through to the final grade in dog obedience in only 4 months of training. I just love her so much and can't imagine my life without a greyhound in it.
Having a grey that is good with cats is super important to me. It will have to be the most Important trait, since my childhood cat is still alive and kicking. She's settled down as a senior cat and she mainly just sleeps all day.
Informative video. The only point on which I would quibble is intelligence. For our two greys intelligence rating is 4 or 5 tops....pretty slow to figure things out. But our previous dog was a standard poodle so maybe they just seem derpy by comparison.
Greyt video. We have a retired racing greyhound, Freddie, we've had him for about 9 months, he's 4 years old. Adopting a mature dog is ideal in my view, however, many of these dogs aren't use to being family pets and need plenty of time to adjust. So, the character of you dog in month one will be incredibly different to "say' month 6. Massive learning curve for both dog and owner; our Freddie couldn't be loved more, and like you we think greyhounds are fabulous. Also, we subscribe to Xander's channel, he goes on super adventures, and we love his hats❤
I've had nine greys over the years and only one had preydrive issues, So I got lucky there. But I will love the day when we can get greyhound vids that don't revolve around having a retired racer. My last 3 and current 3 greyhounds never saw a track and I had them from puppies.
Yes, I go from the retired racer perspective a lot; not only because it's so common, but also because I think it creates differences that are good for people to know about. What differences do you find between your retired racers, as opposed to your home-raised greys? Also, were your puppies bred from racers?
@@GreyhoundHomecare Lack of prey drive is the big difference I've seen. We've had all sorts of animals from rats, cats, chickens, geese, goats and none of them were ever an issue with the hounds. Most of my pups were from racing litters. Pups that did not make the cut. My current two pups are 10 month old boys who came from ranch stock out of Oklahoma and they are much bigger than the racers I've owned but still as fast as lightning.
I have two large male Greyhound’s one is layered back and the other very active. I would not trust my active greyhound with children but layer back guy absolutely. It all depends on the personality.
I can see that. When my kids were 2 & 6, we went to pick out a new greyhound. We took several dogs, one at a time, into their pen, and went home with the one who was the gentlest with the kids. Worked out great!
I hope both become have laid back enough by now to be trusted with children. But yes, as with every dog race -- it VARIES. These are individuals, and have, besides, grown up in different environments. So hard to make generalizations!
I have never met a grey that drooled that much, even the ones with little teeth. neither a heavy chewer, their teeth are delicate. Love the explanation about intelligence, most intelligence scales are really scales on obedience, not intelligence.
regarding preydrive, my girl has a high preydrive, She was born in Ireland and did one year of racing there then moved to england and raced another year. I use a muzzel on her each time we go for walks, not in the garden though and she has her fun catching birds. Its a natural thing for her, greys hunt and kill prey and has been bred for that specific purpose for the last 5000 years or so. I love your videos, would it be possible to make videos comparing them to, say the top 5 or top 10 most popular dogs?
Much like ours, born in Tipperary, moved to the north of England to race before retiring after injury. Very intense prey drive, we have to be careful when out walking.
@@jeremywilkinson2103 Agreed, that preydrive is intense, I have always had a muzzel on my girl when walking, and so far it has saved her a mouthful of porcupine decoration three times :D

I can’t tell from pictures - I just thought you might enjoy the article , since you like brushing. Shanny, my last grey, used to get kennel coat twice a year.
They wear them when racing for two reasons - First, in the heat of competition, it prevents them from nipping one another. Also, the clean line of the muzzle makes photo finishes easier to determine. Any time they're running around with other dogs, it's good to use a muzzle. They don't usually strike out, but when they do, it's lightning fast. They should be muzzled anytime they are visiting in a home with smaller animals. Lastly, some places (not in the US) require them to be muzzled, even when walking on a leash. An owner must be 100% focused on his greyhound's demeanor when encountering other dogs - They're such marshmallows most of the time, it's easy to forget centuries of instinct to chase and apprehend smaller creatures.
@@GreyhoundHomecare But, I have also seen them wearing them when out for a walk - at meet and greets. Do they tend to bite at these events - or just individual dogs may have that behavior?
All I can think of is that maybe certain adoption groups are educating people to do so? I’ve adopted from 3 groups over two US states, and I rarely see retired greyhounds in muzzles. They were required anytime we boarded our dog at the racing kennel. A few times, a friend invited us over so the greys could play together, and she requested muzzles. Other than that, I never see them; not on a walk, not even at huge events with dozens of leashed greys. I’m not opposed to them, but I hope people think carefully every time they use one. In unfamiliar circumstances; I’m more comfortable with a shorter leash, a longer distance, and closer supervision 😀
