Hello Nathan, thank you very much for this lesson I enjoyed very much! It is for me a very useful introduction to pentatonics in Jazz, because I focus on pentatonics these months and needed some good ideas for applying to Jazz standards. Best wishes from Berlin - Michael

Side slipping works best by 'slipping' on the off beat.

The channel looks great and this just expanded my understanding of pentatonics. Can you do the Bergonzi accent like Steve does? Sounds awesome!

Great lesson. Quick question - when you say a minor pentatonic up a half step is a sub for a 5, I’m getting a bit confused 😅- is it because the A-7 chord is acting as a 1 chord, the 5 then being E7 and the tritone being Bb7, hence Bb minor pentatonic? Or…. I think I’ve figured it out 😂. is it that you’re thinking in C major pentatonic, and the V chord is the G7, and the Tritone of that is Db7 (hence d flat major pentatonic aka Bb minor pentatonic).

Great question! I was more referring to V-I in a very broad sense, more like tension release. Going up a half step creates the tension, and going back down resolves it! You can think about it like you are taking about, but technically there are some weird notes (Eb over E7 for example) so some people might make a stink about that haha. Really it's just a bit of controlled outside playing if that makes sense? Thanks!

@@NathanBortonMusic that makes perfect sense. I think I’m overthinking it lol. I like how you kinda describe it, and can make peace with that 😊 Greeting from the UK, keep doing what you’re doing Matt

funny how you hold your pick
@NathanBortonMusic

It's similar to George Benson is terms of downward pick slant but more like Mike Moreno interns of using two fingers to hold the pick. It just is want feels comfortable to me! Thanks for watching!
