Sharlin Health and Neurology is a premier outpatient neurology and functional medicine practice. We take a personalized, integrated approach to patient care that involves not only pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, but modifiable lifestyle factors, genetics, nutraceuticals, and advanced functional medicine testing for diagnosis and tracking of therapeutic progress. As the country’s first practicing neurologist to be certified by The Institute for Functional Medicine I have carefully curated my team of specialists to develop my functional medicine program called The Brain Tune Up! I am excited to offer patients a higher level of expertise by combining the best of neurology with functional medicine to address disease at its roots. If you want to move beyond an approach to your condition that focuses on symptoms or involves medications that suppress illness only if medication is used, then functional medicine is for you. Functional medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease.

I’m in a similar situation. I do have a tremor in my left leg but the medicine doesn’t seem to do anything. Even at high dose. Seeing a specialist soon. Hopefully they can help me understand what’s going on.

My husband has cognitive decline, ADHD, neuropathy, and Charcot Marie Tooth Disease. We go to his neurologist every six months and his neurologist tells him this" There is no treatment and no cure for this - see you in six months." What a waste of time and energy. We work with a highly competent Functional Medicine Physician who works with his diet, supplements and lifestyle changes but his conditions are progressive. He is age 78 now.

Hi Donna, I hear you! I think you are saying that you have a doctor you like and trust, and while that functional medicine doctor is not "curing" the problem, the doctor is (unlike the neurologist) providing solutions to help slow the progression and improve quality of life and function. Best wishes to you and your husband. We need more people to know there are tools to help them.

Thanks so much, very informative and very needed, 81 yr old patient here. I suffer very painful hands, numb fingers, and some neuropathy in the toes which began first. Numbness/sensitivity of fingers was almost an overnite thing last Sept. 2023. I've been all these months of referral appts to see neurologist. I had laminectomy surgery 1974, was very successful. Lower back pain began again in mid 90s; so I've had much spinal involvement, but nothing has ever ever manifested itself in my hands before. I'l undergo EMG testing in mid February and was very nervous, fearful about it to be honest. I have degenerative disc and osteoarthritis of the spine. Had RNA facet injections in 2022, steroid injections for lower back pain since that time. You have helped me understand more about the procedure & possible results. God bless you; you've been very helpful and I apologize for the long comment.

I had an EMG done in December that indicated abnormalities in both my legs. I was treated for Guillain Barre but the neurologist had doubts it was Guillain Barre after a few treatments with IVIG. I had a visit with my family doctor after I was released from the hospital but she had no answers to my questions in regards to why I have abnormalities in both my legs. This video gave me more answers than I got from my family doctor. I now know what might be the cause for my symptoms I have spinal stenosis, multiple sclerosis and type 2 diabetes. Listening to this doctor explain the results of an EMG, I have information on the possibilities as to what might be causing the symptoms I am experiencing. Two years ago I had an abscess on my big toe and decided to cut away all the skin and tissue right down to the bone. I was able to use a sharp knife and cisors without any pain as I couldn't feel my toes ever since I got MS. Based on the trouble I had with my neck going back to the mid 90's I probably started having deteriorating discs in my back before then with the spinal stenosis developing over time. The MS was diagnosed in 2006 and the diabetes started around 2014. Ever since I got MS I can walk in the snow barefoot even when it's -40 outside. I have peripheral neuropathy. This video has given me the information I need to find answers by doing my own research. The problem with doctors at this time is the tremendous workload they are under so I don't blame my doctor. Now I can tell my doctor that I want to see a neurosurgeon about the spinal stenosis. My neurologist is right saying my symptoms in regards to the peripheral neuropathy has nothing to do with my MS. He has been adamant saying my symptoms are related to my back and not the multiple sclerosis. I don'tknow if this doctor sees these messages but I am very thankful to him for giving me the information I need in order to request to see a neurologist and to request further investigation in regards to the abnormalities in both my legs. I know this comment is long and I hope this will help others who have viewed this video

My Doctor ordered for an EMG/NCV Test. But i am hesitant. Question Sir. Can EMG/NCV exactly pinpoint the cause of peripheral neuropathy ? If this type of test will just determine that a nerve had injury or damage but can not pin point the actual cause to be able to cure the issue. Then this test is useless in my opinion.

Wow, that was a whole lot of tangentially related information. Then once you say the words "skin punch biopsy" the video abruptly ends, with absolutely zero information about this test. Which leads one to wounder if you even understand this test yourself. Next time try getting to the point, and providing information about the topic. Instead of providing detailed to semi detailed infornation on things related to the topic without providing information on the topic. It was a total waste of my time. I came away knowing exactly the same amount of knowledge as I did before watching watching the video. Because the video did not include any information on the topic at hand. I wish these types of videos would stop trying to lay ground work, and focus on the topic. There is literaly gigabytes worth of videos that lay the ground work, and basic understanding of how Parkinson's has typically been diagnosed, and the difference between Parkinson's & Parkinson like syndromes. Stop recreating the wheel. At this point, doing so adds no value.

Thank you Dr Sharlin and Mercy. I have had several neurological exams in my life but no one ever explained them to me. That explanation and demonstration makes the process much clearer and links the exam directly to various neurological issues through the examples you give. I'll share this explanation video with my physiotherapist and carer.

Thank you for this. I am getting an EMG NCV test next week. it has been a year since my thumb started to move on its own. First was both thumb, then it stopped for 3 months. Then the left thumb started moving again on its own. Then after a month, my right index finger started to do the same. There are also occasional tremors for seconds in my cheek and lips.

Doctor, I will check if they find anything from my urine and blood tests done at the hospital. I have had some bad incontinence for the past six to seven weeks. Update: all good, it was caused by mental stress, or as they term what happened, psychosomatic illness. So I have to heal in my mind/ brain, and so I am healing and feeling much better. Mediation helps a lot, take life easier, moment by moment.
