IndyCar's FORGOTTEN Las Vegas Street Race

F1 is racing on the streets of Las Vegas, but they wouldn't be the first to do it. IndyCar raced in downtown Las Vegas in the Champ Car Series back in 2007. The final year before reunification. I feel like most IndyCar fans forget about this one, even though this race was Will Power's first career IndyCar win. Lets revisit the 2007 Champ Car Series opener on the streets of Las Vegas.

@stevenlevitzke4011 we were in Champ Car only and operated as Walker Racing but when Will Power came over here we got sponsorship from Aussie Vineyards and the Australian Government so we "rebranded" as Team Australia. I was primarily the painter but we were a smaller team so we all did other stuff too.

@stevenlevitzke4011 when he came to the US, our shop was in Indianapolis. Everything we had was green and gold lol. The first year we painted the wings black but after that we kept them carbon fiber and just clear coated them. We worked with Sherwin Williams to use their new at the time paint, they used crushed mirrors instead of metal flake to get the metallic look. The cars looked so much better in person than the TV could ever show.

I miss this street circuit. This was a great race to watch. I also miss the DP-01. They were agile race cars with about as much horsepower as the current 2.2L V6s in IndyCar in a much lighter car. Of course, they were as durable as a wet paper towel in a hurricane as we saw with only half the field finishing and built on the cheap since Lola went out of business and CART/Champ Car had no source of new chassis this year. Another fun fact is on the Eurosport broadcasts with Jeremy Shaw had an unknown Toyota Atlantics driver (think Indy Lights for Champ Car) by the name of James Hinchcliffe commenting on all the races that year, and did a great job back then just like today.

Wait wait, Eurosport covered it? I don't remember that either. I just remember the US feed on Motors TV back in the day, and never could find the Eurosport feed of it. Wonder if there's clips of that race or the race up anywhere. Hinch has a knack for broadcasting, as did the late great Dan Wheldon. I still believe if Dan had survived somehow or not raced in Vegas 2011 he'd have been a great announcer honestly

The IndyCars of that race DID NOT require a special layer of pavement for the race; unlike the F1 cars for the 2023 race. The repaving of the streets in Vegas for F1 is creating all sorts of complaints from the locals: To the work commuters taking up twice as long in time to drive to their workplaces; to the monies being spent for the repaving all-the-while the residential areas have crumbling streets and nothing is being done to repair them.
@bartsullivan4866
@bartsullivan4866 9 месяцев назад
I kind of figured that par for the course. It is kind of sad Dan Wilson died at the Vegas speedway would have been neat if Indycar would have returned and gave the oval another shot. F1 can afford it they have more money.
@jesuschrist69
@jesuschrist69 9 месяцев назад
Most of that is just Las Vegas being Las Vegas. The city brings in billions every year, if the city wanted too, they could repave every single street, but they don't. Can't really blame F1 for bad decisions of the cities leadership that has had the same mafia connected family in the mayor's office for 20 years.

@@bartsullivan4866 They probably could with the DW12 since they can vary the boost and remove a lot more downforce. However, I think the track is still way too narrow to be considered today even though IndyCar needs more speedway oval races today.

Making note of the comments with the 2007 race not being on the memory radar for racing enthusiasts. One reason could have been the race was run on Easter Sunday. The other reason [just my opinion]: NBC Sports have a way with making their televised racing coverage forgettable.

One of the funnest races we've been to, you could go grab a yard arm and wander back to your seat) Correction, the chicane was added due to the underpass central pillar, you couldn't have them flying down full speed with that blindly there. Neater story, that California intersection was so traffic rutted on Friday practice that overnight they completely tore up the entire section and repaved it. (Friday is where that iconic Tracy launching all 4 wheels in the air pic came from, they'd hit the ruts *then* hit the curbs, then fly)

It's amazing champ car could whip out a chicane for driver safety before that tunnel, explains the surprise when F1 couldn't agree on one for the banked corner at Indy when only the bridgestone runners took part!

Why sell GA tickets if there is no viewing? We ended up standing behind the corner workers at or near that failed chicane and it was a complete bust of a weekend. *deadpans* Looking at that chicane they put in the straight leading downhill, now we know where they got the idea for the chicane in Baltimore... That said, this circuit wasn't the worst street circuit (Baltimore takes the award there) and if they'd had a chicane a/la the ones in Surfers just past the pit exit there, this might've been a decent circuit.

A parking lot isn't a street circuit lmao. It literally had gravel run off areas and looked like a conventional race track. And you are also completely wrong about IndyCar racing there 3 decades later, as they raced at Cesar's Palace the very next year after F1 did not return in the 80's as well. You should probably fact check yourself before coming at me...bro.

@@Demise90Racing Still a sanctioned race. Plus it was before modern Las Vegas with streets on the Strip that is more accommodating to do such a race. This wasn’t an indycar race, this was champ car. They didn’t unify until 2008 so it’s not a forgotten indycar race because it was a different series. Also there were two F1 races in the 80s in Las Vegas and many NASCAR races starting in the 90s all calling themselves the Grand Prix of Las Vegas
@Demise90Racing
@Demise90Racing 9 месяцев назад
I hate having to explain this over and over again, but here we go. Firstly, yes this is an IndyCar race. After reunification in 2008, all USAC, CART, Champ Car, and IRL records and stats merged under the IndyCar banner. It keeps things simple and uniform. And helps with discoverability of American Open Wheel history. Second, everyone and their grandmother knows F1 raced there in the 80's. So did CART the following year after F1 left. It was not a street race. It was a circuit built in the Caesars Palace parking lot that looked like a conventional race track with gravel run offs and such. Third, Nascar started racing at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 1998 and was never ever called the Las Vegas Grand Prix lol. So you literally just made that up. I'm always open to being corrected and criticism, but this comment was just so goofy that I had to respond.

That describes most of that year. Even though Bourdais capped his 4th championship in a row, the DP-01 provided some great racing. It would have been awesome if unification happened and IndyCar ran Dallara Hondas on ovals and the Panoz Cosworth on road courses. But if I could do that, I would have ensured the split never happened.
