Unfortunately, those are no longer available. You could use other small devices like the GL.iNet GL-AR300M16-Ext. It's bigger and needs its own power (any USB power bank will work), but also much more capable and smaller than a HAP lite. And in that case you would use a USB to ethernet adapter. Hi Mark, great video. I'm looking towards the same setup. What type of Digirig Mobile did you buy (standard logic levels)? And which cable did you needed to go with the Digirig? Thanks for your info. 73 de Phil ON4VP
To further this we used Allstar as private nodes but if you have an internet connection AREDN has away to port forward it to go out to make them public. I have not done it that way but it is possible.
Awesome video Mark! I was hoping for a software fix for this, but glad to know there is at least a hardware fix out there. Just started my journey of getting winlink to work on Mac, but I've decided to dust off my old Windows laptop and just use that instead.
How would it work with the Jpole wire inside the PVC?..Reason I ask, I can find all sorts of extendable poles and tripods for on-the-cheap at places like Goodwill if I just want to hang something OR even buy like a new, collapsable pole with hooks on the end for painting, flying a kite, etc, that can be used at various lengths up to 31 ft for HF, all the way down the spectrum (and they collapse down to about 4 feet)...BUT all of those are for hanging EXTERNAL wires. I want to make a jpole that'll be protected inside PVC for a more permanent setup along with using PVC pipe and connectors to fix broken whips. I get all these speculations and smart-ass comments "Just buy another antenna" from Geeks who really haven't got a DAMN clue about much of anything. I want someone with knowledge/EXPERIENCE to tell me is PVC a good shell?
Thank you for this video. What an unusual approach to add a BT device in this manner but it worked fine for me after I followed the steps you did on this video. Very helpful.
Great Mark, I have a QB25 and I can't get it to connect to my local gateway. Is there any way you can shoot me the settings for your QB25. I think its a timing setting on my QB25 my Modilinkd works fine for my Baofeng. Thanks. Larry KN4PYW.
I don't think there were any special settings in the QB25. Use a 2nd radio to listen to your QB25. Make sure audio levels are ideal using the Moblinkd TNC app. Try another radio. Coordinate with the RMS station owner on a testing day.
Brilliant solution! I find that using the Wifi tethering technique very finicky also, and I hope your method will solve that problem! In my particular situation, I made my MMDVM hotspot out of a Raspberry Pi3. It has a micro usb for power, and then 4 other regular USB ports {type A?}. In your video, it looks like you are powering your hotspot with a separate power cable to the wall into a microusb port on the hotspot, and then using a second microusb port to connect your iphone. My raspberry pi only has the one microusb port for power. Therefore, I have no second microusb port to use in order to plug in the phone. Can I instead use a lightning to USB A cable to plug the phone into one of the USB A ports, and therefore not need the microUSB to USBA OTG adapter at all? Do you think that would work? Thank you so much for your help!
Thanks so much for the reply! I ordered the cable and cant wait to try it. I also was not sure if the "OTG" type adapter was somehow special to this particular set up. I know I sound like, and actually am, a "newbie" at all this., so....thank you for your patience! Your blogpost link was also very helpful. @@MarkWarrick
@@dpetervan in your case, you don't need the adapter. You're just using one of the USB-A ports on the Raspi 3 and a standard lightning cable. Be sure to do the command line instructions which are needed to activate USB as an ethernet adapter. km6zpo.com/tether-your-iphone-to-a-pi-star-for-a-more-reliable-connection/
Yes!.. Thanks again. It took me awhile yesterday to figure out how to "SSH" into the Pi when only the Pi star image was loaded. I used "Putty". Low and behold, I successfully got to the command line prompt on the Pi! I was impressed with myself! LOL. I then entered the UN and PWD, and then your suggested commands rpi-rw sudo apt-get install usbmuxd and it returned something to the effect that it was already functional, so, I assume I should be good to go. I will follow up when I receive the cable and plug it in..... Thanks again! @@MarkWarrick
OK, tonight I ran the usbmuxd command, I plugged my phone into the USB A port on the pi. I turned off WiFi on the phone, and then turned off my wireless router just to be sure the Pi was not still using my home WiFi network.....and it indeed worked! I used "Parrot" successfully, and also connected to TG 91 worldwide. Very nice Mark! Next step is to see if I can take the Pi with me in the truck, connect it to my phone, and try operating mobile. Thanks again for posting this video! 73 Pete KD2OMV
Just the volume level. Make sure ALC as shown in the VARA Fm program is in the acceptable range. Too loud will over deviate the transmission. Too soft and there will be no signal. Talk to the vara FM station owner and coordinate a test.
Can you please post your settings on the MobiLinkD. I am having issues with it working on my FT-60R. But not one my Anytone. {and yes, I am resetting the TNC send/receive values for each different HT.}
What value do you think this video has by comparing antennas based upon SWR? Why not include a dummy load in the comparison? That's got a one-to-one SWR.
Thanks for your video. I'm trying to connect a iPhone 12 via cable with a MMDVM. Hotspot is recognized by iPhone but phone requests a device code. Any hint? 73 DO2HJW
Hi there, nice video! I own an IC-7100 (over USB), FT-2980, FTM-3100 and a FTM-3200D. I heard this Kenwood has a great receive. Do you think it outperforms my radio's with regards to decoding more packets? Is it really extremely sensitive? Kind regards from The Netherlands
Thanks for your sharing! I've tried your method but I may be mistaken. Could you please give me support? I have my iPhone 13 PM connected to my hotspot with a lightning cable. However, unlike your demonstration, I don't need an OTG adaptor to covert USB-A male to micro-USB male. Instead, the USB-A male from my lightning cable can be directly connected to the hotspot, that USB socket originally connected to a Wi-Fi dongle. Another micro-USB socket of the hotspot is for power supply and it has no big deal. After such connections are made, I turn on mobile data and tethering on my iPhone, and I wish to tether via USB, (and that's how the lightning cable works, right?). I've waited for about 15 mins but the display of my hotspot shows nothing. In this case I think it's searching for a network but in vain. Do you have any idea about this issue? TIA!
Sounds like you’re missing a needed driver in the pi-star. Check out this article for a full description. km6zpo.com/tether-your-iphone-to-a-pi-star-for-a-more-reliable-connection/
Can you believe people are rigging up Arduino controllers just for this? Very innovative. Well done. There's a Chirp setting to cut the Vox sensitivity during transmit. Might be the problem with the other radio.
I have the valiex super gremlin v 2 which I purchased a few days ago but I’ve been having issue’s with the charger and or battery. I left it charging for a full two days in an outlet on its own and it never charged. The lights on the charger change colors anytime it connects so I know the cord works and I’ve seen the percentage go up by at least one bar before but it’s been days and the shop I got it from is no help. Would you happen to know what the issue is?
Would this setup work with an ICOM ID-52a? As I understand it, you can use an Android as a hotspot but not an iPhone. I was thinking a Raspberry Pi or so either device would also it but can’t get an answer. 🤷🏻♂️
Mark would be willing to post a video of the settings you are using on the FT-981, and then the settings in Winlink & VARA HF? Or are the videos that you are aware of that could help me the settings? I am using a digirig between by radio and Computer for audio, and a single usb from Radio to computer for cat control. All the connections are working, but I am missing something in the settings somewhere, I am unable make any HF connections.
Check here for a full list of settings and feel free to reach out via email. My contact info is on the website. km6zpo.com/winlink-via-vara-hf-with-yaesu-ft-891-and-signalink-working-settings/
How much do those Evolve laptops weigh? It might be fun to take one on a SOTA activation and see if I can make four contacts using PSK31 or one of the other modes supported by fldigi on HF. I've got a MS Surface Go but the weight makes me think twice about lugging it up the mountains here in Utah.
They are about 3 pounds. There are certainly lighter choices on the market. But a couple nice things about the Evolve is that it can be charged off 12 volts and for the price it's something you probably wouldn't mind breaking.
@@MarkWarrick Have you used this product? I bought a USB-Surface charging cable and it didn't work. So I've become skeptical about these 3rd party products.
@@dangermandave67 The exact one I have used is this one. It's a SLOW charger, so don't expect to provide enough power to charge and operate at the same time. a.co/d/aEdhazt
Contact Wes at hammadeparts.com/ - it's a set of two cables - an RJ-45 for the mic and a single pole 1/8th for the speaker out which are joined to a single TRRS input for the Mobilinkd
Thank you for the showing a nice way to get Packet Winlink working. Your display makes me wonder if the FTM-200 does not have two receivers by how its working. I use the Mobilinkd with my FTM-400 and it works on the B band as expected.
You could be right. There's a setting in the FTM-200 for how often it switches back and forth between the RX of the A and B channels. That leads me to believe it's a single receive radio.
Super video. Just got mine. How do you turn off the sections to the right of waterfall, I hit some buttons and I have no clue how to turn them off. Thanks and 73
Not sure how, check the manual: radioddity.s3.amazonaws.com/Xiegu_X6100_User_Manual_20211123.pdf - I'm using different firmware on this device now which I got from R1CBU - info here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-faqbIOCUodM.html&ab_channel=TemporarilyOfflineHamRadio
Which cable did you grab from the Mobilinkd website? I've been looking but don't see Anytone listed anywhere, nor have I found the requisite cable upon some cursory searching. Cheers!
It’s a standard K1 connector just like those use for Baofeng, TYT and other Chinese radios. It is NOT the programming cable, but rather, just the audio. BTECH APRS-K1 Cable (Audio Interface Cable) for BaoFeng, BF-F8HP, UV-82HP, UV-5X3 (APRSpro, APRSDroid, Compatible - Android, iOS) a.co/d/iBFVv2F
The "8800 mAh" figure means almost nothing by itself. What voltage? Internal cell voltage? 5 volts? 9volts? 12 volts? The nameplate on the back of your battery also said the 12-volt output was limited to 2 Amps. The 6100 uses 2.35 Amps at 13.8 volts (32.43 Watts as measured in the ARRL lab) and your battery is only rated to supply 24 Watts. I suspect the 6100 will just shut off if you tried to transmit at full power. You may get away with it at 5 Watts.
@@MarkWarrick - What was the voltage being displayed on the radio DURING a full-power transmission? Were you getting a full 10 Watts while using this battery? How did you calculate Watt/hours from the information given?
