That used to be the old Elk plant. Was a much better product then. Gaf is garbage. Quality control every hour😂😂😂😂 you know how much product is made in an hour.
Looks just like the steel mill I worked at. The accumalators, the bridle rolls, the dip pot, the welding of splices, everything. Btw- their maintenance pays really, really good. Like in the mid to high 40s depending on your experience. Making $48 an hour in industrial maintenance is literally unheard of, unless you work for the state, county, city, or a union. For a private company, thats damn impressive. Even the steel mills dont pay this well.
OWENS CORNING shingles are much better. I worked at the Summit Ill plant and we did more quality checks than to just look for color variations.. Every month we purchased shingle bundles from other nanufacturers such as IKO , GAF and others and we measured the quality against each other were OWENS shingles were better. I left the OWENS plant since 1995 to work at Ameritech Telecomm. Came back to Mexico in 2002.
I have done so many warranty claims on GAF Timberline Shingles through the 1980’s and 1990’s . I would not install GAF Timberline Shingles on my home or any of my customers homes . Certainteed Landmark And Landmark Pro are the best .
We just had new Duration shingles put on Oct.28,29,30. The next night: bangordailynews.com/2019/10/30/weather/halloween-storm-could-hit-maine-with-gusts-up-to-60-mph/In addition to losing power we lost 4-5 of the ridge shingles. I suspect if the installation had been done in warmer weather and the shingles had more time and warmer conditions to adhere this wouldn't have happened. The last time we had IKO shingles and they were horrible, not that all IKO are necessarily bad.
I am curious as to how many nails per shingle did they put for the wind testing. Also the only test I didn't see was extreame hot and then cold. Just to see the effects of how the extreame temputures would of effected the material the shingles are made of. In order to really do this test fairly, you need to do these test for 6 months every day. Then and only then will you see the wear and tear on the shingles material. Hot and cold especially. Also do a test on different attic ventilation. Where one attic has poor Ventilation and the other one good. Do that test for 6 months as well and I guarantee you'll see how well these shingles hold up. I know that GAF makes a great product, but if you're going to test it. Then do it Right.
Where in the world are you going to put these shingles that will receive the condition you refer to with the hot then cold? No point in a test like that unless it’s Armageddon
The news was as pathetic in 2012 as it is today in 2018. 1) Angies list? It's an internet marketing platform. She may know some stuff about roofing, but should not be consulted as an expert. She has NO qualifications to serve as an expert witness here. 2) Metal is louder than asphalt. It's a fact. And even common sense. The contractor is stating irrelevant facts, which while true, also serve to lower the sound of asphalt shingles. So if the facts 100% support asphalt and 100% support metal, then ONLY discussing them as benefits to metal is a false narrative. 3) On and on I could go. Just pathetic. FAKE NEWS!
Most reputable shinglers in my area put 2 nails within 3 in of each other by the seem end and start the other 4 nails 1ft in so there is 6in in either direction of the seem
Dow went bankrupt doing the shingles. ...look at the dates the new ones are made of unbreakable glass and cost a little more then asphalt. ...21 dollars a square foot. this is the future. ..just be patient
thanks for upload , I can now breath ok knowing how this product is made and understand the cost of roofing that can last over 25 years ( depending of quality )
13antoanto my personal favorite is Owens Corning the pink roofing material I hate Tamko the adhesive is poor quality and over the shingles become loose and are vulnerable to high winds
I just watched Judge Judy in which a roofer was being sued. According to the roofer on the show, re-roof meant to put a second layer of shingles on top of the old shingles. He was being sued because the home owners expected the old roof to be removed before putting down the new roof. I see that your title is called 're roof your home', but you remove the old roof.
That is what Judge Judy said. She said that if there is a term of the trade that a layman does not know it has to be spelled out to them. She said that she would think a re-roof meant to tear off the old and put on a new roof. Needless to say the roofer lost the case.
What's the peak power (W/m^2)? What is the price per Watt (including installation)? Looks like heat dissipation could be an issue with these panels because they are flush mounted to the roof. Traditional solar panels run cooler (and higher efficiency) because there is a slight air gap between the panel and the roof. Efficiency? Panel Lifetime? Some consumers may actually want to compare performance specs among different solar systems before making the investment in solar.
Lol this is supposed to be an informative video and the guys installing are nailing right in the key-way/ seam. Sure they're hitting the line, and they may not have blow offs, but there's a good chance of a leak because of the water that will run over that second nail and rust it out. The hand nailers should have their first and last nail 1-1.5 inches from the end, not 2-3" from the end like they were doing... Good points on hitting the double line, but poor nail placement.
Good job sir! I'd let your company shingle my roof without hesitation. To the comment below; Absolutely nothing is wrong with using a nail gun to apply asphalt shingles. You simply have to set the psi, set the nail depth at the gun and ensure ambient temperature is around 40 or greater. Anyone who makes a blanket statement about not using roofing guns is an idiot, or ignorant on the subject.
I'm a roofer and we use GAF Timberline occasionally. its not our go to shingle but its still a good quality shingle. I've always wondered how shingles were made. now I know
Great video! I hope that correspondent is having a great career! I'm just finishing up a DIY project on my home using Timberline. It's a dynamite product.
jeffy john I'm a roofer and it's my Personal favorite over Tamko and GAF, the Duration Storm version of their shingle is the best very wind resistant and the adhesive on the shingles is also great. Tamko has bad adhesive at the edge and throughout the years it no longer sticks to the shingles. I did have one bad bundle once the entire package of shingles weren't packed properly and stuck together permanently. I have been doing roofing for 6 years now, also OC is the most resistant to damage when walking.
I hope my insurance adjuster knows to look at the down spots and in the gutters. One side of my house had over 1 1/2 inches of granules stuck in a 60 ft section of the gutters. At the front of my house it looks like a river of mud came off of my roof. I have 60 ft of roof vent that looks like it was worked over with a ball peen hammer. All of this came from a 15 minute hail storm that had hail the size of large ice cubes. Does this sound normal to you. Thanks for posting a informative video.
+G Webb for the record - NEVER have the insurance company do the initial inspection. ALWAYS have a contractor or an insurance restoration specialist do the initial inspection and represent you to the insurance company.
You mean at 0:40? The bottom corner of a shingle cant be within 3" of a nail? He was about 1 inch, right? That subject the nail to possible moisture, rusting and then a leak?
I would not want my roof nail gunned. Why do you not paint the pipe jacks and vents to match the shingles? Paint is cheap, try it the roof will look better.
Nails were not in the right place on the laminate install, watching the the guy in the beginning of the clip installing the laminate shingles had nails in the keyway of the shingle row above, The butt of the shingle above cannot fall within 3" of a nail. Poor video, poor roofing.
Yes. the manufacturer prints a diagram of proper installation practice and Florida standards on every bundle of shingles. Sadly most roofing contractors don't bother with instructions or proper installation practice. If you haven't gotten your roof done yet, take a look at the back of the bundle you'll see the diagram I'm talking about. If you see them not following the rules, throw them off the job. They voided the warranty on the product so throw em out and don't pay.
